The vet thought he may have had a stroke. I know cats can often overcome a stroke but sadly Nelson was not strong enough to win the battle.

Hi Ela,

I've just seen this sad news. I'm so very sad that the little guy didn't make it. Like some of the cats that people discuss on Purrs, I feel that I knew him which is strange since I never had the privilege to meet him. :( :( :(

You described the symptoms but what did the vet diagnose?

RIP Nelson. I just hope that you witnessed love as you did towards the end for the majority of your life.

So very sorry to hear this but, as everyone else has said, this dear puss knew what love and comfort was and that's what everyone needs at the end. You did all you could and Nelson is now waiting at the Bridge for you.

I am sorry to hear about poor Nelson, but at least he knew love and warmth, and didnt have to spend his last weeks in discomfort with his health issues. RIP little one.

I take consolation from the fact that, rather than being left to wander alone or tortured at the hands of those teenagers, Nelson was loved and cared for at the end of his life.

Yes that is my sentiments exactly, thank you.

I am sorry to say that little Nelson had to be gently PTS this morning, he started to fall over during the last few days and then started to toilet everywhere, he was taken to the vets on Saturday and placed in a pen for his own safety, but today he went down hill very fast, the vet said there was some medication she could give but the prognosis was not good and he would not have a quality life. Donna made the sad decision of the final act of kindness, rightly so in my opinion. At least he knew what TLC was during the last 7 weeks of his life.
Thank you to the member who contributed towards his vet bill.

Hi Lynn,

Yes Tarzan had gone down to 2.5kg. He was so hyperactive and I should have spotted it earlier - no excuses. As I type he is looking at my computer screen. Since the operation he has slowed down as hoped. He now weighs 3.2 kg. The vet was always looking for him to be 3kgs. He is a small lad with a big personality. We don't want him to go beyond about 3.3kg as he is 3 legged and too much weight will hinder him.

I posted a picture of him on the gallery although I didn't reduce the size -through ignorance of how to do it.

Incidentally, totally unrelated and at a massive tangent, have you seen the veterinary surgery on the yellow pages advert? That was taken at my vets and features young vet Christie and nurse Mary? I haven't got their autographs yet  :) :) :)

The vet had stated before the op that they would do a dental later. However a couple of days befor the op Donna found 1 tooth that had dropped out in the bathroom and the mouth was in such a bad state that the vet had no choice but to do the dental as well.

You are totally correct pete, the paras are often attached to the thyroids are barely noticable by eye alot of the time.  We alway had bilateral thyroidectomys hospitalised for at least 3 days post op with strict monitoring via blood tests.  Its not quite so bad in unilateral removals if its the first side.

If it was Ela's normal vet i'm sure they would have been very particular as they always seem to be.

I do hope Tarzan has now recovered fully.  Was this the little one that was always very thin or am i confusing with one of the others.

Nice to hear from you btw ;D.

I hope the hyperthyroid operations went well.  I hope that the vet is keeping a check on calcium and liver enzyme levels.  As we found out with Tarzan who had his thyroid glands and some teeth removed recently, calcium and liver levels can drop.

One problem with this operation is if the throid glands are very small, their removal can occasionally include the removal of much smaller parathyroid glands which can also affect calcium and liver efficiency. It is never the intention of vets to remove these glands but it is very delicate and fiddly surgery.

I hope the vet is monitoring this Ela.

Nelson ans another cat Donna is fostering are going in today for Thyroid ops. I am sure both will be very soon back to full health and strength.

Good luck to Nelson and the other little patient for their ops today.

Although the circumstance that Nelson came into our care was not good, in a way it possibly did him a favour as he now has all the necessary vet care to ensure a long and happy life.

w is Nelson getting on, Ela?

Do you know what, for a minute I had to think Nelson who's Nelson. As you know we have had so many problem cats to deal with in the last couple of days. I have also just has to authorise a very sick feral who was blind, deaf FIV and FeVL +be gently PTS, although I know it is necessary it still hurts.

Nelson is fine thank you and coming along very nicely.
