Shame you couldn't see Riley today Helen but fingers crossed for tomorrow.   He's conscious and he's fit-free so that sounds like a pretty good place to be compared with the last few days.  :)  Steady progress is what's needed now and we're all here with our positive vibes to make sure that's the way forward.

Realistically this sounds like  the best update you could hope for Helen.  Really very encouraging indeed  I think it's early days to read much into kidney results as he's been through such a lot poor lad and needs some recovery time  :care: :care: :care:

Helen, not sure who suggested it but have you thought about taking a "smelly" t-shirt in with you when you visit him.

Well done Sam.  Yes I remember someone mentioned this and it's such a good idea.  Do you have an exercise bike Helen?  Seriously, if you do, put that T Shirt on and start peddling for "our" lovely boy

Hope you are well stocked up with Feliway as there may be a few hiccups with the lovely Lu when Riley comes home as Riley will smell funny .......... I think this may have happened before?   Just thought I'd mention it :shy:

Helen, not sure who suggested it but have you thought about taking a "smelly" t-shirt in with you when you visit him.  (Not suggesting you are smelly of course but you know what I mean  ;)) .  This will help him to relax again when you leave if he can't come home straight away

I think the standard of veterinary care is everything you'd wish for.  Very good news Helen, even though you can't see him yet.  The longer term will take care of itself to a degree; the important thing is to get him to that next stage.  One step at a time.

Another update...

Vet said he is doing well, albeit very quiet still. He's not walking around as he is still very wobbly but he has started to lap at food. The blood tests showed his kidney levels were elevated which could be due to kidney damage as he wasn't urinating fully when he was unconscious or it could be due to the anaesthetic, he has had his fluids increased and is going to start antibiotics. He'll have another blood test first thing and also a urine test.

He's still in intensive care and will probably remain there until tomorrow now when they'll have another assessment and see about moving him to the cat ward. The vet still didn't want me to visit him today, as the priority is keeping him quiet and fit free, but said that he will hopefully be well enough for a visit tomorrow if he moves to the regular ward. I'm feeling much more positive but he is still very poorly and this next few days is just about keeping him stable without even thinking about possible kidney damage or even how his fits are going to be controlled going forwards.

:thanks: again for all the well wishes, please please keep up the vibes for him as they seem to be working.

This sounds like a very positive start and agree with the others that he will be feeling all the after effects of the last few days. He also probably is wondering, where the hell am I cos he wont remember anything that has happened.

It will be great if you can visit but dont get too excited cos I am sure it will take a little while before he becomes the Riley you know and love so much.

Hey but he is slowly getting there and the vets are great

That is good news Helen.  I agree with Dawn - his body has been through enormous upheaval, so it will be small wonder if he's a bit "flat" and quiet.

He'll be wondering "what the hell happened there?"    Renewing all of the positive thoughts and vibes, and keeping you company in spirit if not in body until you next hear from the vet later today.

Another fairly positive update...

Waiting until 10am to ring was agony, made worse by the fact that the vet was in with an emergency until 11:15 so only just found out how he was overnight.

The vet said he is doing OK, they have stopped the anaesthetic with no twitches or seizures which is obviously good news. He has drunk a little water and later they are going to offer him some food. He's going to be kept in intensive care until about midday when he'll be assessed again. He's very quiet and 'flat' but that's only to be expected as he is on a cocktail of anti-seizure meds plus has been anaesthetised for the best part of two days. Next update will be later this afternoon when we will discuss the possibility of a visit. Please can everybody keep up the positive vibes for him :wish:

Just checking in to add a few more    Helen.

Paddy was very ill, but very slowly he began to pull round.  The fact he survived the first two or three nights was the telling thing, and I feel it is for Riley too.

I feel this too.  I would be climbing the walls in your shoes Helen but I really think time offers Riley's best hope for a full recovery together with specialist vet treatment of course

Will of course be back later to check on our boy's progress.

Sending some more get well vibes for today.  Things sound promising so I hope he can be brought fully out from the anaesthetic and remain seizure free.  One step at a time but it sounds like he is making slow but steady progress at the moment, and the vets seem to be in control of things.  I hope you can visit him soon   well done to Lu for knowing his meowmy needs some extra hugs at the moment.

And squeezing in many more from me Ross and The Tink too.  Big soft squishy ones, short fat fuzzy ones, and enormous fat stripey ones coming your way.  Am so hoping Riley has had a peaceful night, and that the improvement continues steadily today.

Try not to think long term prognosis at the moment, Helen, and concentrate on a step at a time.

I know it isn't the same, but when Paddy had his stroke, our vet didnt hold out much hope for him at all given his age (15) and the fact he had a heart murmur in any event.

Paddy was very ill, but very slowly he began to pull round.  The fact he survived the first two or three nights was the telling thing, and I feel it is for Riley too.

Sending all of  our love to you and Lu and our beautiful Riley.   xxx

I hope Lu gives you lots of snoozles again tonight Helen and that you wake up to the news that the reduction in Riley's anaesthetic is going well and you can see him tomorrow.
