Just rang the vets for an update, the vet was in consulatation but spoke to the nurse who was looking after him. She said he had been quite settled overnight and was still being kept asleep with the anaesthetic - she said he was occasionally a bit twitchy but no full on fits by the sound of things. Next step is for the neurologist to assess him this afternoon to see about weaning him off the anaesthetic. Please keep everything crossed for him, I need him back with me  :(

Tess also lived with epilepsy for around 8 years, and didnt even need medication, but as you say, it can be different with dogs.

The pertinent point is veterinary opinion appears to be changing, and affording an opportunity for time to effect an improvement in the animal before any major decision is taken is gaining ground.  It's what we all want for Riley and Helen for sure.

Oh Helen, sending you and Riley healing wishes and love to all three of you!

I know they're different animals but my friends dog has been stable with his epilepsy for years now, they'll hopefully find the right medications for Riley when you can bring him home x

Just had a read through that 1st article that Sue posted and can only say thank heavens Riley was able to be placed in the excellent care of specialists so incredibly quickly.  You couldn't possibly have done more Helen as it seems early treatment is so important.

It sounds like time and patience are going to be key here and I'm willing Riley to wake up this afternoon when he is brought out of anaesthetic without any signs of fitting

Hi Helen,

I just checked in to see how Riley & you are - sorry it isn't better news

I don't know the first thing about seizures but it sounds like your vet is very knowledgeable to find the cause so quickly. I hope it can be bought under control.

I just wondered if there has been any mention of Cyclosporin as it works wonders with autoimmune problems.

Haven't been on Purrs for a while, but saw Riley mentioned on FB. Helen, I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. Please take care of yourself, so that you don't get ill too (and so that when Riley comes home, you'll be able to dance attendance on him). Furry vibes from my 4 (even Lilli with her ulcerated eye!!!)

I am so sorry the news wasnt better but those links that Sue found are very good and agree with who ever said hold on to the word stable.

Also as said it sounds like he may take a while to stabalize and they ceratainly seem to know what they are doing and it must be terrible not to be able to visit but think they are giving you the best advice they have.

All I can do is send many many good healing vibes for Riley and I hope all the good wishes from the Purrs family help him to get better.

Cuddle Lu a lot and make sure you are eating even if its a little bit often and hope you can get some sleep

I know you cant be with him but what about wearing an old t-shirt to get your smell and taking it to the vets so atleast he has your smell with him. I did this when Penny was ill and i couldnt visit her. The vet said she perked up atleast for a while. Hugs to you

Like everyone was hoping for better news to come out of today.

He's still here and fighting - they just need to get the right medication to stop him fitting.  Hope the combined will of the Purrs family will do some good.

Oh Helen ... just checked back in hoping for some good news  :'(   Done a bit of internet search (as Sue did) and have not managed to find much more ibfo.

This link give a bit of info on the type of medication that can be used to treat epilepsy:  http://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs/Web/People/lowekamp/feline_epilepsy.html   this may be of interest as well:  http://yourcatcareguide.com/wordpress/?p=145

Will continue to say a little prayer for Riley and keep the get well vibes going.

Thanks again for all the positive vibes and prayers, I really can't tell you all how much it means to know that you are all rooting for him

Sue - thanks for those links, especially the first one about 'hippocampal damage' which is exactly what he has...

Quote
complex partial seizures characterised by arrest in a sitting position, profuse salivation, facial twitches, vocalisation (most often howling and hissing) and mydriasis

His mini-fits are exactly as above and the main fit was a full on unconscious thrashing affair, he hasn't had another one of those although when I spoke to the vet earlier this afternoon he said he nearly went into one at one stage as his back left leg started paddling so they upped his meds to pull him out of it.

Latest update is that he is very poorly still but stable with no further seizures so the vet has decreased the anaesthetic levels slightly - next update from them will be tomorrow morning unless his condition changes but he's literally unconscious at the moment  :'(

Oh Helen.  :cuddle:  You must be devastated, especially with not being able to see him.     Its all too easy to imagine the worst in these situations especially when it comes out of the blue and you're being bombarded with information that you don't understand.

Would it be worth calling again when you've had chance to digest what was said- or what you think was said.  That first article Sue located says seizures are often slow to respond to medication so that must be encouraging.

We're all rooting for you Riley.  Have a good sleep and wake up better.

That's exactly it, the not being able to see him is agony  :( I just can't believe how quickly it all happened and how normal he was beforehand  :( I wrote everything down the vet was saying when I've spoken to him - he seems very caring and tries to give as much scientific info as possible without making it mumbo-jumbo. I think it was just his accent (he's French) meaning I misheard the area of the brain affected but Sue has worked it out for me. He said the articles I found as a result of Sue's link are relevant to Riley and offered to print one out for me.

Just checked into top up the vibes. I am so sorry. Poor Riley.
Autoimmune problems can be managed though even if they cause a bad reaction at first. I'll consult my book on alternative medicine for animals when I get in as every little helps and vitamins can be used in conjunction with traditional meds.

I noted that too Carol - it said that it can take between 4 and 11 days for the cat to begin responding to the treatment, and therefore every chance should be given for recovery to take place in that timeframe.

Helen, have also come across this, which has some interesting information.    It maybe something you can use as a basis for discussion with your Vet, although it sounds like they're very knowledgeable about this type of ailment in any event.

Oh treasure.   This isn't at all what you needed to hear.  Do they have any idea what causes the changes, or what brought on the reaction?

I'm so sorry that they've indicated it would be better for you not to see him, but I can understand how hard it would be not to want to touch him and speak to him, when he needs to conserve his strength and put it towards healing.

I think they probably meant hippocampus which is an area of the brain that helps with spatial orientation and navigation.  You may be able to find something on that.  Will nip off and see if I can find anything for you.
