Unfortunately I don't think our garden is suitable otherwise I would have gone for it. Think we are going to give the harness a go and take him around the garden.  It's hard because he was so used to being outside. Fingers crossed this might cheer him up a little

Such a difficult situation  :shy:  If your garden is suitable (6 foot wooden fencing in good order) you could consider catproofing. You can DIY it from around £100 - I have an article from a magazine with pics/instructions if you're interested.

It will take time to see if it works, a couple of days isnt anywhere long enough.

Lupin was an indoor cat who I bought a walking jacket for and its an addiction. Now the bad weather is here he doesnt go out every day but will whine and whine.

It takes me longer to get my cold weather clothes on than he is outside cos he doesnt like getting his feet wet

I had a harness for Lupin but he could get out of it but the jacket is much safer

You could invest in something like this so he could go out but just stay in your garden?

Well, we are now on day 3 of Oscar officially being an indoor cat.  It's not going too well so far :-(  He doesn't seem happy at all.  We have a Feliway plug-in, given him lots of attention and toys to play with but it doesn't seem to be helping.  We are thinking of buying a harness so we can take him out in the garden. Would this be a good idea? Or would he get even more frustrated when we take him back inside?  Perhaps things will improve with time?  It's a big change for him and perhaps he just needs time. I just want him to be as happy and comfortable as possible in the circumstances

What a few days you must all have had
I'm glad Oscar has responded well and is back home.
There is a website I found with some good advice for coping with this and I'll try to find it and post it for you but if the vets suggest a renal diet my recommendation would be to have a look on zoo plus. My 18 year old wasn't keen on Hills or Royal Canin so I tried some of the specialist brands from there and Happy Cat biscuits went down well.

Yes Oscar is now home :-) He is curled up beside me on the sofa.  I think he is very happy to be back with us :-) He has quite a lot of medication to take; Fortekor which he will need on an ongoing basis, some antibiotics and antacid medicine.  He is due back at the vets for a check up in 10 days time.  We have also a Feliway plug in to help him settle into life indoors. I'm hoping it was also calm down our 1 yr old kitty, Nelson as he does tend to annoy Oscar a little but in a playful way.  Just over the moon to have him home again. It's been a roller coaster few days

Did he make it home today? Hope so

I think it's a very good idea to keep him indoors from now on, just in case. All the more time to pamper him :)

Just thought i'd post a little update...  Went to see Oscar today at the vets. He is doing really well and should be coming home tomorrow :-). Unfortunately there was some lasting damage and he will have to live with chronic renal failure for the rest of his life. However, the vets thinks that because he is young he is likely to have a better life expectancy than most cats who tend to be much older with the condition.  I'm just so happy he is coming home to us. We are going to spoil him rotten with lots of cuddles :-)  we have decided also that from now on he is to be kept inside as the vet is worried someone is putting poison down near where we live as the same thing happened to our suzie last year.  Just can't believe anyone would do that to an animal, it's so saddening :-(. Anyway the main thing is Oscar is coming home to us. Thanks all for your kind words and advice.  Katy x

Thanks you both so much for your kind messages.  It really is a big comfort to me. :)

I just thought I'd let you know we have just received another phone call from the vet to say that Oscar has been on fluids for 2 hours now and he has immediately began to respond well.  he is alert, bright, hungry, not drinking as much and urinating normally!  :)  She says that they are going to keep him on fluids for 36 hours still but she thinks that there is a very good chance that the damage is not extensive and that he is going to pull through!

He is not out of the woods yet but it is certainly very hopeful that we may have caught it in time. :)

Sorry to hear the update is not good news

Do your vets allow visitors? If they'll let you go and see him you could take along an item of worn clothing to help comfort him while he's there. Fingers crossed that the fluids can help him, please let us know how he gets on

So very sorry to hear this and would go along with the poison thought. The drip will help to flush his kidneys and hope that he can be medicated to help him.

Come on Oscar you can do it

Thanks for your replies and warm welcome

We received a call from the vets about an hour ago which confirmed the worst.  He is in the early stages of renal failure.  :(  The vet did say however, that his levels were no where near as high as Suzie's were last year.  They have put him straight onto a drip and said that they will know more after 36 hours.   I just don't believe this is happening again.  All I can think is that there is either lilies in a neighbours garden or more likely that someone is putting down poison for rodent control.  Oscar loves hunting mice.

Just have to wait now and hope he can pull through :(

:welcome: to Purrs and echo what Helen has said

As far as I know kidney damage cannot be reversed but can be treated so that it remains at the stage it was for a long time.

3 yrs old is very yoiung for kidney damage unless caused by say poisoning. There are other reasons that a cat drinks a lot and I have a 14yr old semi feral who does but her blood tests show her to be absolutely 100% healthy.

What has your vet suggested he do about what he can feel?...........sorry just read blood tests and xray.

I hope these reveal the cause and what ever it is can be helped

Sorry to have to welcome you to Purrs at such a worrying time  :(  I truly hope that it is not what you suspect, it sounds positive that he is still alert/eating and that it was only your 'high alert' that led to him seeing the vet.

I don't know that kidney damage can be reversed as such but somebody elese on here had a young cat with suspected kidney damage due to anti-freeze poisoning and he recovered and now has a renal diet. Did you ever find out what caused Suzie's ARF? Are there lillies in your or nearby gardens?

Have everything crossed for the test results

Possible Kidney Failure
« Reply #1 on: November 17, 2012, 13:16:20 PM »
Just over a year ago I lost my 2 year old cat, Suzie, to Acute renal failure. Now I think it might be happening all over again with my 3 year old, Oscar :(

We took him to the vets this morning as I had noticed that he's been drinking excessively and urinating alot more.  The vet did a physical examination andd said she could feel something solid in his guts.  He has been kept in for blood tests and an x-ray to find out what the cause is.  I'm just so worried that it's happening all over again.  I can't stand the thought of losing him aswell :(   He seems absolutley fine in himself and is still eating which is different to how Suzie was.  She was very poorly when we took her in to the vets.  I guess on this occasion we have learnt to look otu for the signs.  Is it possible that it could be something else?  Or if it is the early stages of kidney failure can it be reversed?

I really don't want it to be what I suspect :((
