I must admit, as a cat lover, I do always find people who are casual about their cats a bit of an enigma. I can't figure it out, because most of my cat loving, cat owning friends are always happy to chunter on about what their cats have been doing etc. Even people who look after feral cats seem to take a keen interest in the welfare and behaviour of those cats, and if I had a beautiful girl who was visiting other people's houses and eating a good dinner there, I'd want to know about it.

I dont think the problem is solved cos there is a desperately hungry cat, who may be used for breeding and the woman doesnt want to talk and is angry at the cat!

I hope you are able to find out something locally Alison, maybe local rescues and local vets?

Thank you everyone for all your help. Over the past two days I have managed to gain Tabbys trust and put a paper collar on it this afternoon. It does have an owner who phoned me up about half an hour ago saying Tabby had just come in.

She has 6 cats. She was ok with me but definatly did not want to chat which is odd for a cat lover. She seemed a bit annoyed with Tabby.

Poor Tabby was absolutly starving this afternoon.

Well at least I have solved the mystery but will ask around locally to see what I can find out about the woman

How about setting the trap at about 6 am it will be light then and you could go back to bed for a couple of hours? Just a thought as Tabby appears between 9 - 10 am.

Yvonne so pleases you have caught Piggy

I am still quite reluctant to set it at night beacuse of the hedgies. Would be a bit worried if I had to release it in daytime. I take your point that night is the best time.

Millys Mum that is a wonderful idea as tabby is very wary of trap. It is definatly a female. It only seems to appear between 9-10 am

How is it going? Success I have caught piggy in the trap

I recommend setting the trap overnight because there appears to be a lot of movement as it gets light very early in the morning when everything is still and the majority of the human population are still in their beds.

If tabby isnt going in the trap then i would try taking out the clear perspex end and feeding the cat in the trap unset. Start the food by the door and move it inwards until confidence is gained. Then set it and hopefully trick tabby

Unfortunatly not Gwen. At the moment it tends to appear in the morning when Archie is asleep. If Archie sees it he chases the poor thing. Will set the trap and look out for it first thing

Den the Tabby has no white on it at all, its totally tabby. Its got quite big ears and big round eyes. Its also very thin and long

Desley you are right and I have little chance of trapping it today. Tomorrow I will just put the food in the trap, although I will worry if it does not eat anything.

Yvonne I live in Cheltenham. We have not been able to catch the cat ourselves so far but I have not given up . It is so wary of people and scared. We leave the back door open but this has not worked yet.

The only thing I have trapped so far is Archie who liked the food and was not bothered about being unable to get out

I wish you the very best of luck with trapping Tabby, maybe we can exchange some useful tips here. Don't worry about trapping hedgehogs - I caught one in my trap last night and he came to no harm whatsoever.

I am not up to speed on your stray cat, whereabouts in the country are you and is there any reason why you could not take the cat in youself? I think that the Rescue response is a little generalised and it is good that you want to be kept informed regarding Tabby, hopefully somebody on here can help - I will offer myself but geographically I do tend to be a bit compromised.

Alison, there is a chance you wont be able to trap him this morning now you have fed him out of the trap. The idea is that their only way of getting food is in the trap so they have no alternative. A lot of tabbies have striking markings, it doens't mean they have any pedigree in them. Good luck with catching him

Some great advice thank you. I will phone the lady again Rosella. Sue Good idea about me taking Tabby to my vet. MichelleIf I catch Tabby I will tell CP that I want to be informed of any decision they make before they implement it.

OH told me it had come into garden 15mins ago. He gently called it and it came up to him a little way. It went past trap and because of this I put a pouch of food out as I was so desperate for it to eat.

I will go out to check trap in a minute as I wanted it to eat in peace. Have kept Archie in.

I am beginning to wonder if it is part Bengal, sp?, or all Bengal as its markings are so striking.

Dont panic I am sure with the wonderful rescue people on here, even if the cat is ill, something can be sorted for it.
Once it has been caught, tell the CP lady that you dont want any decisions made without the speaking to you.

Alison, just catching up with this, and hope you manage to have luck in catching this little lady. Let your instinct guide you as to what to do if you can catch her. Would your local vet look her over if you took her in to them?

Just a thought Alison. You might want to try telphoning the lady who lost a tabby cat again and explain you are very worried about this tabby's future if you are able to trap it for CP and that you would be very grateful if she could ring you if only to tell you that her tabby was found.

Thanks Den. I think when and if I catch Tabby I will have a good look at him and decide. It did let OH tickle behind its ears but did not like me touching it. Maybe because it is very scared.

It depends on the state of the kitty. I actually volunteered there a lot last year, and did get a job but I packed it in after a very short time as it wasn't suiting me ... as a result I've felt sooooooooooooo guilty and haven't been back since January

My point is I don't know how full they are at the moment. Whilst they do a brilliant job there it's not a specialist cat place. It's a hard one really, they don't test for FIV etc but the kitty wouldn't get as much attention than a dedicated CP place. It would get all the medical care, a lovely heated place to stay. If it's hissing at everyone though I don't know ... they won't PTS unless they feel like they really have no choice, ie they feel there is a reason it would be unrehomable. Or as I said its really sick. Whilst I was there very few cats got PTS and the ones that did were all really sick, that the vet felt there was no quality of life.

I really don't know what to suggest. I'm torn as to which would be best ... they both have plus points. I never encountered an aggressive cat (except for the boarding cats) - I don't know what their policies are for cats who are wary .. all the ones I encountered for rehoming were loveable cuddle bugs.

large round prominent eyes (unless you are Marty Feldman) usually mean fear and excessive weight loss. Only way to identify those sorts of disease would be a blood test I would think.

Are there any signs I should look out for that might tell me the cat is really sick. It has very large round eyes that seem to stick out a bit, could this be something or just because its lost weight

The animal shelter don't test for FIV/feline aids BUT they will PTS if they cat appears to be sick/has something seriously wrong. It would go into quarantine for 7 days if the vet thinks it's ok after that it will be put up for rehoming. Of course they will check for a chip to start with to see if it has an owner.

The only alternative in this area is the Animal Shelter which will probably have the same policy but will check in the morning.

Yes I will move this ands I find it so worrying that so many Cpo branches are still willing to put pts cats when there is no need.

Someone from my Art Socirety had a stray she called Whisky move in and Cp took it on same condition as yours luckily Whosky has been passed fit but now she is thinking about having him back but is worried cos she is 72.

Knocked me over with a freather cos I thought she was much younger.

sounds like you need to make sure you are the person who discovers the cat in the trap. Den can whisk it away and you can tell your local rescue there was no-one in the trap, but you let it off so that neighbour's cats could not be caught ...

Thanks Gill. The Woman has been round and dropped off a very large trap and fishey food. I told her we could not use it overnight because of the hedgehogs.

Am I being over sensitive because when I asked about its fate if caught she said it would go to the vet for a check up. If it has something serious or feline aids and cant be found a home it will be pts. Now feel very worried.

She is due in about 5 mins. Apparently she feeds 17 ferals every night
