Thanks everyone!

I think Sabby must have been overdoing it then, as he is certainly not stressed!  In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find a cat more laid back than him!

I did wipe cool water on his ears which he seemed to like :)  He's his usual bouncing self, so I don't think he feels unwell or anything.

I've only ever seen 2 of my cats pant - Humphrey had been over exerting himself on a hot day, he  did pant for a minute but he soon stopped and Mavis was panting like mad when she got very stressed on the way home from the vet. When I asked the vet about it, he said that panting is one of the signs of distress in cats but if your sabby seems ok in himself, not stressed or anything, he probably just over did it.

Just imagine running around in a fur coat on a hot day!!! I'd be panting too  ;)

If you want to cool him down then soak a tea towel or similar in cold water, squeeze it out and then wipe them down (will make towel hairy if they are moulting  :evillaugh: )

On hot days i have a fan directed at the floor for them (but not if iv already made them damp!)

It's not normal for cats to pant in everyday circumstances but Riley pants when he has been running around like a crazy loon for ages, I asked my vet about it (as Lucas doesn't pant) and he said it's nothing to worry about in my case.  I know cats don't pant to cool down like dogs do though.

I didnt think cats were supposed to pant?

My little Sabby came back just now, layed down and was panting like a good un with his tongue hanging out like a dog! Is this normal?  Its very hot - Im not sure if he has been running or not, but it seemed like he was hot.

Sorry about lack of apostrophes - my keyboard is playing up and my apostrophe key thinks its a tab key!
