Thank you for all your replies. It's good to know that others have had the same thing with their cats and it's nothing to worry about. I guess our cats show signs of ageing just as we do  :Luv:

All of the back cats I have known have had a rusty tinge when seen in the sun and/or as they have got older.

Many black cats develop reddish or brownish tints to their fur as they get older, and it isn't anything to be concerned about.

Misa is black and white and some of his black fur gets browny  but not on his head.

Dont think you should worry but if really concerned have a word with your vet after the BH

I used to be similarly concerned about Billy (now 11) and Groucho (now 5) but suspect it's just a colouring thing, nowt else  :)  Just a smokey black  :Luv2:

Ruby (6) and her ma Dinah (7)'s black bits are black.  No sign of brown  :-:

All four are happy as Larry  :)

Ben is a rescue cat aged about 7. He has been with us for 6 years. He is black with only the odd white hair. When he lies in the sun, there is a reddish tinge to his fur unlike Ollie who is also black but his fur is pure black. Recently it seems as though Ben is developing red / rust coloured patches of fur. He eats only dried food - he will not eat anything else. Other than this change of colour, he seems healthy. Is this something to worry about or maybe it's part of the aging process? Does anyone have any experience of this?
