I agree it is however allthought it sad we can do nothing about that.

As previously advised we will home at Christmas in certain circumstances, however, it can be the nicest home in the world but if there are small children we will not, it will be just too noisy for an new kitten/cat. Even if the family say they are having a quiet family Christmas with small children it won't be and if it was there would be something wrong.

I think you have to take each case as it comes. There might be genuine people who are desperate for a cat/kitten and use Christmas as an 'excuse' to get one for a present. It doesn't automatically make them frivolous and potential bad owners.
Whatever, if they approach a rescue centre they will be made aware of the seriousness of their responsibilities.

Grr. WE had someone being really snotty with us last week for saying we dont allow cats as X MAs presents - plus the only kittens we have wont be ready till Boxing Day anyway, so no chance of them going till the New Year - we will bend the rules for adults though, as long as it will be a quiet house, which is good for cats like Tiger, I wouldn't want her to miss out. My boss's son wants a tortoise for X Mas, I told him he would be best off sponsoring one for a year and taking him to a sanctuary and seeing how long this want lasts!!

You are quite right, whenever anyone phones to say my child wants a kitten it is not very likely they get one from us. Sadly they will get one from somewhere.

It was just what Beanie said.Some people think of pets as "things" ie mum I want a playstaion and a fluffy kitten for xmas. By easter they are bored and want an x-box and a puppy

Tan - the people that don't understand Ela's are those that treat animals as a commodity either intentionally or subconciously. Either way the effect is the same as buying something you want over the counter.

I was thinking more of people wanting to adopt who might be in my position rather than from our rescue side of things, you know, where it would be quiet and fine for a new kitty to settle in ok. I'm hoping to have a new addition myself over the festive period all being well

I'm sure we'll start getting those calls soon. We do the same as you ela, we do home at Christmas sometimes depending on circumstances but if people are likely to have loads of people visiting we advise they may be best waiting until afterwards to actually take the cat although they could get the home visit done and reserve the one they want. We mainly do it for the adult cats though cos we don't want them to miss out on a potential new home and kittens are much easier to find homes for in the new year. There are people like myself who will be having a very quiet Christmas so it would be a shame to miss out on a good home just because of the time of year. I do agree so much with your phrase about rules

So many rescues have a blanket no at this time of year, but as you know there are always exceptions to the rule and I think the saying 'Rules are for the obedience of fools and guidance of wise men' fits purrfectly in some cases.

Don't understand why people don't learn. There has been alot of publisity about not giving animals for Christmas but bloomin people still do. Awful!!

I could well happen that my mum may want another cat at or near Xmas (as her 19 year old tom recently had a stroke, and now we're all just waiting for the worst), in which case I would happily handle the donation and any other expenses, but the decision to have a cat is a serious one, and should be taken independantly of any "occasion". You're absolutely right to take the attitude you do.

I have just received my first call for a kitten for a Christmas present. A young lady as asked or a kitten to give her mum for Christmas. She was not pleased when I said we don't give cats/kittens for people to give as presents.

We do actually home cats/kittens at Christmas depending on the circumstances. e.g teachers who are having a quiet Christmas and 2 weeks off work, or if someone rang very close to Christmas had a cat for years, then something had happened to that cat and they were desperate for another. Of course it would depend on they type of Christmas they were having, if they were having lots of visitors or going out a lot themselves perhaps it would be prudent to wait until after the new year.
