That is a fantastic idea! We'll have to do that. Different info on different tables, too so it doesn't get boring. Thank you Sam! The kittens that run our café, Sir Fluffington and Sushi, like the way you think!

Info on placemats is a brill idea - they would be forced to read it if placed in front of them rather than having a choice to read it on the wall.

What a really good idea, Sam!  ;D  You could laminate all sorts of info, and even promotions for the cats looking for homes at the local shelters.

See, I'm wasted in my job.  I really should be in Marketing / Begging

Ah, well that's where our Kitty Servants come in! A member of staff will be employed just to wander around, looking after the cats and customers.

OMG my dream job ... wandering around being at the beck and call of cats all day,  Fab!!!  (actually, now I think about it isn't that what we all do all day anyway ).

with regards to the cat body language info .... could you maybe have the info on A4 sheets, laminated and then these can be used as placemats on the table  ;)  (just an idea)

Thank you for your kind messages! It's great to hear cat lovers are being so supportive. We are planning on having posters about reading cat body language. It's just finding space on the walls when we get a property! There's so much we're going to put on the walls, some info might have to be put in booklets on each table. As for webcams, we are planning on having one of the room where they are away from people in the main café area so if the cats aren't about, people can still see them. Perhaps we could stream the café live on our website too... :)

Recently we had a meeting with iCatCare's chief executive Claire Bessant, veterinary director and a behaviorist Vicky Halls. It was so helpful. They're willing to give us advice on our journey, which is such a relief as the right kind of help has been very difficult to come by because of the Cats Protection.

I like the idea, and 10 cats is about the right number.

You should get a webcam for the cafe

thank you for your detailed answer KonekoCat. it definitely is reassuring, glad to hear they will be 'your cats' aswell as cafe cats. i do think it is good too that you are highlighting rescue cats with info and a percentage of profits.

how about some posters on your walls about 'how to read cat body language' to help your furry and non furry guests get along?

good luck and will look forward to pictures and updates.  :)

Thank you for your replies, we really appreciate it.

Mary - Thank you so much for your kind words, we were planning on fostering 2 of the 10 cats and letting people adopt them through the shelter we plan on working with. However we have changed our minds on that one as while it would be great for people and the shelter, it wouldn't for the cats as it would be likely that those cats would get adopted quickly thus changing home 3 times in a matter of weeks as well as our cats having to get used to 2 new cats regularly. We have decided that it isn't really fair on the cats and will just be advertising cats for local shelters instead. Hopefully we can become a hub for people to come to when they want a cat and we can put them in touch with the shelters. Yes we will have lots of signs about showing people how to treat the cats and what the individual cats like and dislike, Sir Fluffington (one of our kittens) has to have one of his paws resting on your hand or over your arm when picked up or he struggles and isn't happy. We'll make things like that clear for people (clearer than I wrote it). If you ever want an update as you don't use facebook or twitter, feel free to email me at jon@konekocat.co.uk. :)

Slugsta - We were originally worried that the cats may get stressed despite there being no evidence that they would, we worried nonetheless. Visiting the cat cafe in Totnes really helped dispel those fears as their cats love it there, we are also in contact with them and they are lovely people who more than happy to share their wisdom with us. We will make sure the cats have a nice environment such as having at least 11 hiding places and plenty of high up places so that they can look down on everyone (at least 20 perches) as well as a separate room. Where do you live? As there are a few planned to open across the UK hopefully one is near you. :)

SamMewl - I imagine in the next 6 months there will be guidelines for those planning cat cafes in the future as there are 2 separate bodies currently putting work into something like it (which we are involved with and hopefully they'll work together). We will put all our welfare plans on our website soon for everyone to see and obviously update them once we open and see what works and doesn't. The cats will be indoor cats but that is fine as long as the cats are entertained, which will be no problem for our future cats. We'd love special needs cats but unfortunately a cafe just wouldn't be the right environment for most of them. We fell in love with a kitty with cerebral palsy when visiting a shelter but we wouldn't be able to care for him adequately and he wouldn't be safe in the cafe. :( Don't worry there will be plenty of hiding space for the cats as detailed above. We are considering feliway, it depends how the cats seem in the cafe, we will be slowly introducing them to people, starting with only allowing about 5 people and then building up. We can't wait for the cat genies. I've heard in Japan they have human toilets a bit like cat genies, the way they self flush and clean.

Dawn - Yes the cats protection did object but they haven't given any valid reasons for doing so and are not willing to talk about it, they have also admitted they do not know about cat cafes, nor will they visit the one that is open in Totnes. Rest assured though we have heard that the people who do the day to day running of the shelters for the cats protection think cat cafes are a great idea and also don't understand head office's views.

Mymblesdaughter - If the cafe is unsuccessful I imagine we will keep the cats. I will become too attached to let them go. Apparently owning 10 cats isn't that many, we've heard of a vet at the PDSA with 20. Yes we will need friendly cats that are easier to rehome but as far as we are aware, all the cat shelters here are full (a lot of shelters here range from 40-70 cats with people doing it in their own homes) and we hope to promote local cat shelters and help them find people to adopt cats. Here in Brighton the local shelters are all overcrowded so I'm sure it'll help if we adopt 8 even if they are the friendly ones. We will also be donating at least 10% profits back to a local shelter so we can help them (it will start at 10% as we will be using most of the profits to make the property better for the cats and then potentially expanding, then we will make more profit which means more for the shelters). We are also hoping we can help the shelters find volunteers as people have already asked to volunteer for us so hopefully many will be willing to volunteer for shelters. We have discussed with a shelter but they don't want to be named at the moment. The cats will be part of our family and will live with us, we plan to either get a property with a flat above or live around the corner. Yes we agree it can be worrying whether the cat cafes are just doing it for money or not, and whilst we want to make a living, we don't want millions, we more hope we can help change a few cats lives in the local area, well hopefully a lot of cats lives. Some cats are not friendly with strangers however at shelters we have met plenty of cats that would fit in fine in a cafe.

Sue - The cats will have lots of hiding places where people can't get to them if they are not feeling sociable. With our business model, people will not be paying for time with the cats, merely buying a drink in a place where they can observe and maybe stroke/play with a cat. We imagine as it will attract cat lovers, people will be sensible and let the cats come to them (apparently this is what happens in Japan and what does happen in Totnes). I imagine 'I'm always really happy to step in for a spot of cat cuddling if the owners and cats are up for it' is how almost everyone who comes to the cafe will feel. We plan on having one member of staff out with the cats at all times to make sure that everything is okay.

JenGeorgieBob - You're exactly right. For some cats it would be hell (the same as for some humans working in a coffee shop would be). Others will love it, the cats in Totnes cats cafe love it and I'm sure when we adopt ours, they will too. Your cats sound lovely (should definitely make Benji a cat friendly lasagne for his birthday). It's amazing how many cats love chocolate when its so bad for them, I guess no different from humans. We will have a member of staff making sure no kitties have a sneaky latte when they think no one's looking.

We wanted to say thank you for everyone who replied and to everyone who reads this post as it's quite a long'n.

Thank you,

Jon and Keri

Like most people I like the idea from my point of view, how lovely it would be to be able to cat cuddle but will it benefit the cats? But then a lot of the time when I was volunteering at a cat rescue we would be socialising with them so is this just people paying to socialise?

I have 2 boys at the moment, Benji would be ideal for this temperament wise, he is laid back, mixes well with other cats, he is pretty much a large lazy Garfield. He struggled to find a home in rescue because of various health problems (and is now indoor only because of this). However, he would eat anything and everything left around and would lick any plate or cup so this is something that will have to be monitored.

Fred is younger and playful and confident with us but not with strangers and really only likes cuddles when he approaches you for them. He also likes to drink hot chocolate and steals it from cups. (we really have to be careful around him with chocolate as he will try and steal any form of chocolate)

I suppose it would be depend on how closely interactions are monitored and on the character of the cats. Although as has been said it is the confident ones that find a home more easily, maybe regular updates of the other cats available for re-homing in rescues that wouldn't suit the cafe but would suit a home?

I can see it from both angles as it would raise the profile of local rescues but it will be a careful balance to allow the cats to flourish.
...pick yourself up, dust yourself off, start all over again...

I love the idea of a cat cafe in theory - they seem to be increasingly popular elsewhere in the world, particularly in China, but I do also have concerns about the cats' welfare.  What if they're not feeling very sociable?

In light of the recent tragic incident involving the little girl attacked and killed by her pet dog, what would happen if a cat lashed out, injuring a customer?

There are a lot of aspects of a cat cafe with which I'm unfamiliar, and as a cat lover, whilst I instinctively think "Wow - yes, we can all get to cuddle cats if we want...."  :wow: I also cant help thinking "Is this what the cats need or want?"

I'd be really interested to know more about how othr cafes that have been established for a while operate so that I could understand more about the day to day aspects of the idea.

I know if we go to stay somewhere (like a B & B) where they have cats, I'm always really happy to step in for a spot of cat cuddling if the owners and cats are up for it, and if we're abroad where there are cats, they inevitably get invited to dine at our table.  :evillaugh:

I'm sure you've already put a lot of research into this venture, and look forward to learning more soon.

Could you answer a few questions?

If the cafe is unsuccessful, what will happen to the cats?

Has a rescue been found that will give you the cats? I know CHAT has come out against the idea. Many cats at rescues aren't that friendly and usually the friendly sociable ones are the easiest to home.

Will you live on site? As the cats will need to be looked after in the evenings overnight and on days the cafe is closed?

Personally I don't like the idea as I worry like Slugsta that the cats will get stressed. None of my cats have been overly friendly with strangers. Also I don't like cats being used as a money making enterprise. If it helps cats that need homes to find homes then maybe I could be won around to the idea.

i think this could work but needs careful planning, some of which you seem to have done. i hope you outline this in information in the cafe as if you are successful others may copy and not make it as cat friendly as you plan too.

i would recommend that you think carefully about the mix of cats you pick to minimise stress and have a strategy for cats that don't seem to be coping well.  it is probably best to limit mixing unrelated adult females as as in at terms the females are boss cats and too many bosses in one 'house' can lead to many arguments!

you have a double door planned to prevent escape does this mean that all the cafe cats will be indoor cats? it matters more that you get the mix right if cats cannot go outside for some breathing space. if you are considering just indoor cats then maybe consider 'special needs' cats eg deaf that need to be kept indoors.

lots of strangers and a multi cat situation without access to outside is potentially a very stressful situation for cats. outside access or at least lots of hiding places and safe places would be essential.  feliway may help too.

i am glad you are wanting to take rescue cats and i am also curious as to whether you would allow adoptions between friends who may meet at your cafe.

..oh and cat genies are great!

I can only think of how good it will be.  People who are not able to have cats of their own because of financial problems or because they live in rented accommodation or a flat where not allowed can come and make a fuss of them.

I also think it a good idea for people to bring children to get them used to being around cats and before getting their own.

Great for people who are lonely and can have a coffee and the company of cats and other cat lovers.

You say the cats are from a rescue - will people be able to adopt the cats after checks have been made etc?

I don't do facebook or twitter so can not catch up on there.

Good luck.

Hello again, Jon and Keri here.

You may or may not have heard about cat cafés and we're going to open one in Brighton. We would love to know your opinion on them as avid cat lovers.

For those who don't know, it's basically a coffee shop but with cats roaming around for you to relax or play with (in our case, we're adopting about 10 rescue cats from a local shelter) whilst enjoying a cuppa and perhaps some homemade cake.

There will be a double door system so that cats will be safe if they decide to go walkies. They will have self-flushing and cleaning litter trays (CatGenies) in a separate room and plenty of high up places, such as shelving and cat walls so they can observe the humans from a safe place (at least 20 perches and 11 hiding places).

The American Humane Society, which we believe is the biggest animal charity in the U.S.A. do seem to recommend multi-cat shelters of up to 10 cats. They even say that this many cats only need a space of 10x15 ft, which is much smaller than the property we'll get plus the cats will come home with us at night as a part of our family (we're going to live above the shop).

As for food hygiene, no cats in the kitchen (obviously) and all food has to be pre-wrapped (we've been in talks with our local EHO) and drinks will have lids if people request them.

We're on facebook and twitter if you want to find out more about us: www.facebook.com/KonekoCatCafe or @KonekoCatCafe

We're really looking forwards to hearing everyone's opinion and understand it's not for everyone.
