FC I'm just a tiny bit smitten with Evie, she's so precious.  :Luv2:

Separation issues, Beau's a bit clingy and pee'son my suitcase regularly given the chance, but not got one who won't let me out of their sight. Off to do some research.....

She is stunning!  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2: glad everything went well.

I fear you may have your work cut out for you  :evillaugh: Denzel used to cry at the patio door too whenever we went outside and has turned into the most clingy little cry baby!

Follows you around all the time, cries for no reason ALL the time, and its one of those pathetic little heartbreaking cries..... not that I would swap her for anything mind!  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:

Lupin off to the vets this afternoon cos he is still being sick and hardly eating. He is not his manic self and sitting on a cold floor but hugging the radiator.

I really dont need this and hope Gareth can sort him out

Thanks Sheila  :)

Evie is spayed and after 2 days of falling out with me  :shify: she is back to her normal self  ;D ;D So pleased to get that over with - I think she went into heat (?) and what with the boys in, out, in out, i dreaded her escaping (although she wouldnt have gone far as she's only ever stuck her nose out)

Anyway, heart sounded fine and no issues detected. Vet said that if it continued then they would look into it but no on the service problems and most likely the heat and/or stressing with herself trying to catch her toy. I'm pretty happy with this theory and the theory of everyone on here.
She is growing into a lovely young cat and such a little snuggle bum - she was the best behaved they'd had that day and she didnt get an ASBO on her vet record  :evillaugh: :evillaugh: unlike that Peanut  :shify: :evillaugh:

The first pic is of how she is waiting for me to come in side (I smoke outside  :shify:) - we think she has abandonment issues  :evillaugh: she squeaks for me until i come back in the house and this why shes Evie Von Squeaks  ;D ;D

Hi - only time I've ever known my Thomas pant (now age 6yrs) is when he's been too hot. Sat sunning himself on HIS chair in the full sun in the conservatory! Eventually a bit of common sense has got the better of and he's had a drink and found shade or a cool surface like the bath, basin or shower!  :-:

I'm not a vet and I'm not saying this is the reason yor cat is panting, but this is the only experience I can draw on.

Your ferals will not be disappointed with the Da Bird and definitely worth the wait from purrs  ;D ;D
I have never known a toy get my cats so excited and they cry for it! a popular attachment is the Da mouse (which actually should be on a different rod - but my boys are happy with it on anything  :evillaugh:) and well most anything!

as you can tell from this thread it gets them hunting and is a good way to wear them out  ;D ;D

I have checked the Purrs shop, sadly, it's out of stock. I'll order some when you have some in. It seems to be due in about a month.

Thanks Liz. Hoping it'll help me bond to Lucy and her boys: Da Bird and slices of turkey from the local butcher - if that doesn't do it, nothing will.

I'm veggie and hate going to the butcher's, but he sells cream cakes so it's always nice to have an excuse.

Slightly off topic:

Where can I buy da Bird? Seems like it might be a good toy for bonding with my ex-ferals, four of whom (mother and sons) have formed a colony. This and treats could be perfect.

I've tried Amazon UK, but they don't have it.

Thanks.

I spoke to the vet today also, when there with Peanuts eye. She said the heat could also be a factor and to just keep an eye on her. She did feel that given her young age she should last more than 5minutes (on a cool day), but said to see how she is when it isnt warm and if i am still worried they'll just give her a quick check first of all.

Not knocking the vets advice at all as better to be safe than sorry but has she seen a Da Bird in action? There really is nothing like it and I think if she was panting after playing with a 'normal' toy then I would be worried.

 you're right! it really does get them in a frenzy!! i think my basis of play has been "pre-Da Bird" when some cats failed to break into a jog  :evillaugh:

judging by the amount you were charged i'm glad i didnt rush her in! but what a worrying time that must have been for you!!

Tiggys mum - I hope Rileys insurance paid for those tests?!  :evillaugh:

Yep thankfully - all £600 worth, the worlds most expensive Da Bird session! As Da Bird was pretty new to the UK back then (think Tan was the first to sell it over here) there were no other reports of Da Bird mania so I mentioned it to the vet. He had an X-ray of the chest at the same time he was under the GA for neutering, the vet said his heart looked enlarged and it all spiraled from there - the specialist who did all the other heart related tests concluded he was as fit as a fiddle with a slightly large heart in a slightly narrow chest!

Thank you all for your replies   :Luv:

It seems the common demonator of our "heart attack" kitties is the Da
Bird  :shify: :shify:  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

Peanut & Evie do go mad for this toy i must say! I do allow rest periods and also allow the treat of catching it....even if it does fly away sometime later  :evillaugh: this is also to preserve my attachments as peanut can snap the feathers off in 2 crunches and theres only so much cellotape a toy can take before its binned

My worry was like you, Helen - where i pack her off for a full MOT and then they look at me like some neurotic meowmi when the panting is just normal   so thank you purrs for this forum otherwise my cats would cost me a fortune  :evillaugh:

I'm glad it isnt as rare as i thought though!! and apart from causing her to have mini heart attack the Da Bird is a quick way to exhaust a kitten who is on some sort of mission to wreck the place  :-[ she was caught chewing the handles on my windows! whats that alll about!!!

thanks hippiekitty - when you think of cats like that, then i can understand why short bursts is what they do  :)

thanks again all, i feel alot better about it! honestly - you'd think i'd never had a kitten before!  :-[ clearly Tazi & Nuggie were sloth like kittens - and of course they didnt have Da Birds back then! LOL

I agree its a side effect of playing with da bird, Denzel did this a couple of times when we first got it - I thought the poor mite was going to have a heart attack...

Cos she is little she is getting worn out a lot quicker than your boys x

Dinah used to pant too and she was over 12 months old when she came here.  Just vigorous play I'd say.  I always used to stop for 5 mins as soon as I saw the signs.  Sadly no more Da Bird or Da Mousie seshuns here at the moment until Bobby learns to calm down  :scared:

I'd have him sectioned if there was such a thing for Da Bird/Da Mousie kami kasi behaviour  :scared: :scared: :scared:

Same thing happened with Riley and Da Bird when he was the same sort of age as Evie, I packed him off to the vets and after blood tests, X-rays, scans and an ECG the verdict... nothing wrong with him, he was just playing too hard with Da Bird and didn't know when to stop!

If it's only happening after very vigorous play then I wouldn't be overly worried

This is perfectly normal. Cats are not made to run marathons, just short sprints. This is something to do with the heart/lung ratio, and is the reason why so many wildebeest etc manage to escape from big cats: they outrun them. Cats big and small are unable to sustain long runs or periods of play and will "give up" and lie panting until their blood oxygen has returned to normal.

When playing with your cat, allow a few minutes for your cat to lie down with her catch and regain her breath, after this, you can play again for a short time. Just keep allowing lazy moments when she toys with her caught "bird".

Should I be Worried???
« Reply #1 on: July 28, 2012, 01:09:13 AM »
I've just been playing Da Bird with Miss Evie Von Squeeks (aged 21 weeks) and although quite alot of gymnastics and high jumping was involved - it was for only a short period (i'd say less than 5minutes) - after which she lay down with her "catch" and was panting like a dog  :scared: :scared:

I've only ever seen this from any cats i've had during a trip to the vets where they occasionally get stressed. I've never seen it in play and i'm not sure whether i should be worried that she may have a hidden health problem??

After a minute or so, she regained her self and was wanting to play, but again after a few minutes she laid panting again  :( I do play with her everyday, and she plays with toys herself (and wrecks my house) but i've not seen this before and i'm careful, letting them catch the feathers every minute or so to keep the interest etc...so it wasnt as though it was 5mins getting stressed she couldnt catch the toy.. :scared:

Like i say, she's very nimble and flies through air doing flips etc and i dont know whether the vigorous exercise caused it - anyways, it scared me a bit  :(
