I am giving Frontline the heave-ho so is it Advantage or Advocate?

I use Advocate.  However one of the cats has sensitive skin so I use Frontline Combo ( prescription ) on her.  It's not as good as Advocate but better than ordinary Frontline.

I so agree and we are flea free.

I now, or is it still, have two cats that dont go out, one who goes out in the garden for a short while and then there is Sasa!

She of the tortie type I would love to get stronghold on because if anyone has a flea..........it will be her............come to meowmy Sasa, come on, nothing to be scared of

I was using frontline for a few months and saw its effectiveness wane as time went on. Then when i switched to stronghold, the fleas started dying immediately i changed and stronghold didn't lose its efficacy.

I bow to your better knowledge Teresa and have to agree I would in all probability treat far more regularly if I were a rescue and frequently taking in young uns and strays. 

When Grouchie lad arrived crawling with fleas in August 2010, I had sprayed his room before he arrived and popped him to vets within an hour for flea and worming treatments and frontlined everyone else in the house for good measure

I have had over 5000 cats through my doors and can truthfully say that includes some of the worst fleabags imaginable as well as wormy bellies.
I do not have a problem, I believe because I do treat all cats/kittens monthly in order to protect them from fleas.
Kittens are wormed at least monthly with panacur and when age and weight allow get Milbemax at least every 3 months,even monthly if any doubts exist.Adult cats get Milbemax at least every 3 months.
I think people forget the length of time flea larvae can hide in carpets,furnishings etc.
I think possibly those of us in rescue have very sadly seen death as a result of flea anemia or witnessed cats dying through serious cases of worms.
These treatments must be applied as directed, hit and miss yearly treatment is NOT enough. This is not aimed at anyone just pointing out something I feel very strongly about.

Just for the record I prefer stronghold because it treats earmites also.

It is also worth checking what the spot on treats as some treat ticks others dont,same with wormer some spot ons treat tapeworm only,others like stronghold only kill roundworm fleas etc.

Keep coming across peeps saying Frontline no longer works but it works with our lot OK     

I am wondering if it depends on frequency it is used?  I think I use Frontline 3 or 4 times a year on our lot.  Certainly no more and wouldn't use monthly as recommended.   

We then use Milbemax for worming.  Used to be easy peasy hiding them in webbox but Billy and Dinah have that figured out.

i also do not use it all the time and have never had probs with fleas or worms, misa gets a mini millibax at the vets once a year and any other cats get a spot on once a year as they cant be pilled.

I mean that all flea treatments worry me. I know that they have improved since the dark ages but it is still a worry.

It does have that disadvantage but I figure if I apply the flea treatment religiously then my cats are unlikely to pick up tapeworms to begin with, as cats get tapeworm from fleas.

Incidentally, this month I used Advantage and wormed with Drontal (note to self: NEVER use Drontal again--my Murphy needs XL tablets, which had to be cut into 4 uncomfortable-looking pieces that I had to get down him.

Trouble is, it doesnt do tapeworms, which are the most likely parasite when a cat has fleas, so would still have to give tapeworm treatment.

Advocate is imidacloprid (just like Advantage) to kill fleas, but with the added benefit of moxidectin which will kill roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, heartworms as well.  It obviously costs more but it takes a lot of hassle out of worming.

I have never used anything other than advantage and frontline so can't comment on the others.  I used to use Advantage from the vet but started using fronline because it was easier to get, requiring no prescription.  Now I've gone back to Advantage since you can get it without prescription  now and the frontline wasn't working very well and I think it's great.  Done the job and no itching by Mosi.

I would go for stronghold. Frontline stopped working on my ragdolls ages ago.

Frontline does not work on Coco any more so I want to give something else a go. Any ideas please?

I honestly don't know where they came from as neither of them went out doors.
