Most kittens that grow up indoors will settle in well as indoor cats. But don't take in a semi feral or farm kitten. They often do not adapt so well.
I have one semi-feral cat who came to us when she was 16 weeks, and she gets really depressed if she cannot go out.

i've always thought a little boy kitten would be good for her, maybe get her out of her shell a little bit but the problem is that we live in a flat and obviously the chances of finding a kitten suitable for an indoor home - though it's a large one - seem to be pretty slim  :(

You might want to give her a kitten to 'raise'.
Usually, cats are very tolerant towards kittens, and they bond well.
Or you could go to a rescue centre and pick a gentle, sociable, cat loving mature cat.

I have now 6 cats and failed in integrating newbies into the group only once. Even one cat that has been known to be impossible with other cats did well here. The only trouble was that he claimed every house in the neighbourhood, and, given half a chance,  stole steaks, fish and chicken filets from every kitchen he could enter.
He was a true cat burglar, so I had to return him to hte rescue centre for his own safety. They are now trying to find him a home on a farm or in a pensioners' home. He loves being around people, but he should not be in a position to enter other people's houses.

When you say, "a lot of cats" what sort of number are you talking about?

She was one of 10 cats before her owner rehomed her and her sister. They were both sharing an enclosure at battersea so she could obviously tolerate other cats but she was hidden away completely when we went to see her, though that might have been because if the activity outside. We always assumed she might have been bullied by the other cats and that's why she's so shy but we now think it's because the owner didn't socialise her as a kitten (she owner her mum), she claimed to spend hours playing with her every day but based on how she is we now know that was a lie. I imagine she spent far more time with other cats than with humans.

So little Sadie used to live with a lot of cats, we rehomed her as an only cat but were told she could possibly live with another at some point. We've now had her a year and just to see the reaction i played a video of a cat being very vocal on the computer, she was asleep in her bed but after about 30 seconds she emerged, had a quick look around and "talked" back to the meows of the video cat... She's a very shy little thing but i'm now starting to wonder if she misses the company she used to have (albeit probably a lot less company, mind)?

Has anyone else with an only cat experienced this reaction to something like this?
