Oh Dawn I'm so sorry to hear sad news about Monza .... please accept my sincere condolences. My heart goes out to you, even when you know time is limited with a furbabe it doesn't make it hurt any less when they go.

I know you must be hurting at the moment but you must take comfort from the fact that Monza had a happy and full life with you, he was loved, and had a warm comfy home. I'm sure in time you will be able to look back and remember him with a smile on your face.

My special boy gave up today and now he is in peace. I will post a picture of him in the next day or so.
I wasn't brave enough to stay, but the vet had laid out a blanket for him and I know the last thing he heard was a caring voice and not me sobbing. I feel numb right now.
No more hurt, no more struggle.

Hi,

Thought I would update. Monza is still with us. There have been a few occasions when I have started to think he has had enough. But then he seems to rally.
He is still eating a bit, grooming a bit, wanting a fuss and loves to sit in the patio. He is seeing the vet tomorrow for another steroid shot, but we know that the time is getting close. As long as his ears prick up when I say his name and he is jumping for a treat then we know he isn't ready yet.

I have my 19y.o. diabetic on Liquivite and she laps that its a special food for cats - you can buy it on line or most vets can order it

Hello again, And thank you all.
the results of the lungwash are back and confirm he has pneaunomia. He had lost more weight, and mow is a bag of bones. He is eating a bit, being very picky. Despite all this he seems pretty much his normal self. He is still only pottering a bit but is alert, grooming and still wanting a fuss.
The vet is still not at all optimistic about the outlook, which I accept as I asked him to be honest with me.
So, I was wondering if anyone has any good ideas to try to get him to eat a bit more? I am not prepared to stress him by force feeding, but if I can tempt him to eat more then maybe he will be around a little longer.
All I can get into him at the mo is the gravy from pouches of cat food and those dried meat chews, which he is eating with some enthusiasm.
Any suggestions would be greatfully received. Tuna and sardines are not cutting it so I need something pretty tempting!
Still wishing for that miracle.

Thank you. The vet gave him a stronger steroid yesterday. I know there isn't long term, but he is much brighter today, eating more and even having a little potter round the garden.
If we can enjoy the time we have left together that will do for now.
Time for sadness later, memories to be made.

I'm so sorry to hear Monza is poorly. I agree with Gill about telling your son about the rainbow bridge. I would explain to him that Monza is feeling poorly and that he may soon go to the bridge. It's probably a good idea to gently start the process now so he can ask questions ans it won't be such a shock when Monza finally lets you know he is ready to pass on. I would also use the time you have left to build as many happy memories as you can .... lots of photos.

Maybe his old freind Minty is there too, waiting for the old "who get's the lap" competition with him.
In the meantime, I am drying my eyes and going to make the time he has left truly special. My vet said, we have to enjoy the time we have left, and give him what he wants.

This is heartbreaking but think you need to explain to your son about Rainbow Bridge and how its a special place that cats go to be made healthy again and for them to live there forever.

And that they will always be watching over him and in his heart he will always have a pawprint and a purr so he always remembers Monza after he has flown to Rainbow Bridge and everytime he sees a rainbow its a message from Monza saying he is Ok and just checking you and your family are too.

I am not religeous but Rainbows are so special now.

This is the Rainbow Bridge section but you need the animated post at top, its based on a poem that was written long ago by an anonymous writer. Sadly this version shows mostly dogs rather than cats but its serioulsy a haert breaker. Not for your son I think .

Its important to all of you that Monza has as much love and caring until he needs to go to the Bridge and maybe involving your son in this will be helpful to him cos Monza is so special.

Thank you, all of you.
That is what worries me the most. Getting it right. I don't want him to get to the stage where he is suffering but equally I don't want to say goodbye before I have to.
I was reaching that stage with Minty two years ago. Then one morning she came up to let me know it was breakfast time and I noticed she was staggering. So I gave her a big bowl of tuna and rang the vet. She was put to sleep an hour later. I take comfort that she never got to the stage where she didn't wantT to eat. But the decision was taken away from me, I had to do it then.
And then there is poor Ted. The rescue cat that walked round the house crying Out whilst Monz was in the vets. How will he cope? Monza is still grooming (vet says that is also a sign he isn't ready to go just yet). He is helping him groom. And my son, he sobbed and sobbed when we had to leave Monza at the vets in Thursday. What do I say to a four year old?
I feel as if I am betraying Monz just even thinking these things.

I am sorry to hear about Monza. We have been through the same thing ourselves recently with our beloved Kennedy.

Not very sunny here either to be honest (we are North Oxon). I will post some pictures of all three.
Is a very sad day today. Monza became ill very suddenly last week. I had thought his reluctance to go out was snow related. He missed when trying to jump up on Christmas Eve- I thought it was just one if those things that happen to them all from time to time (you know, when they strutt off as if to say "actually I meant to do that"). Anyway it happened a few more times, and then suddenly he got very poorly. He saw the vet on thurs, and was admitted. His breathing got very rapid and the xrays have shown heavy shadowing on his lungs. His breathing is improved but still not right. He was disharged on New Years Day, but when he went back today he had lost another 100gms.
We are awaiting the results of his lung wash & he is on steroids with antibiotics. But basically I know in my heart that the vet is right in his advice. Take him home, enjoy him and spoil him silly. All his moggy dreams have come true- tuna, ham and more tuna.
I know it will be time to say goodbye very soon to a very special cat. So, to make his final weeks or months comfortable and happy. The vet says that as he us eating, wants a fuss and the odd potter round the garden then he is not in too much misery. I did a deal with the vet tonight- he promised to tell me if he thinks
monz has had enough. I promised to make a fuss of Monza.
Sorry to make my first post such a misery. I will be sticking around. It just helps to tell people that I think will understand and not think he is only a cat. Cos he isn't. He is my buddy that I have loved for ten years and has been there purring, dropping hair and sitting in the most difficult a
places for a large part of my life. Bad tempered contrary old puss.

just a quick hi...
My name is Dawn, I live in Oxfordshire with my 4 year old son and partner plus our two cats.
Ted is a very handsome 2 year old we got from the Blue Cross when he was just ten months old. He is Ginger and White with Amber eyes, he is semi long haired and acutely aware of his own good looks. He is very affectionate. The down side is he is a prolific hunter...

Monza is coming up to 11. I have had him since he was 8 weeks old. He is not as sociable as Ted but still likes a fuss. He tolerates my son in small doses, mainly objecting to his noise- he is very gentle with the cats. Monza was a free to a good home kitten. I am firmly his 'person'

We did have another cat, Minty who we lost to cancer two years ago, she was a truly special girl. But a combination of asthma, arthritis and cancer meant it was time to say goodbye.
It took nearly a year to find the right cat, and Ted is that cat. Monza has Been very very sick, I found Ted grooming him last night.

Anyway, that wasn't such a short intro.
