Schui suffered very bad with sinus problems and what really helped was Bisolvon powder, just a pinch in the water daily.  It's really good if the mucus is thick because it will keep it watery and stops them getting bunged up.  It's fine if the other cats drink and no side effects, I was told.  Also a drop of olbas oil on a tissue nearby helps too.  Hope that Franta is soon feeling better  x

I have heard that steaming can help with a bunged up nose.

There is a lady on CC who has a Herpes cat and he is bunged up every day and has some bad days. I remember her posting about using a drop of Olbas Oil on a collar or on a tissue near where they sleep or with steaming.

Anyway I have found the thread (has a few graphic description of nose secretions!!):

I have never done this but maybe there is someone on purrs who has?

i think i read somewhere that steaming helps clear sinuses in cats like it does in people? Maybe sit him in the kitchen with some water on the boil or in the bathroom with the shower going?

Thanks for the offer but tablets no good for Franta.

Trying to work out if I should phone the vet but have taken a direct hit from him in the eye so couldnt drive at moment, have quite bad conjuntivitus.

Franta came down stairs and it was like he was saying help me please.

His breathing is fine but his nose is terrible and he is trying to shake the gounge out of it. Have been trying to clean round his nose and mouth and his eyes not that good either.

Just dont know what to do with him as between this ,he has been and used the scratch post and had a long cuddle so a bit better overall, cept for his nose.

Also not sure that going out in the cold is a good idea or in the car cos he gets so upset and dont think that will help.

I also have to remember that if I ring the vets and they say bring him it will take about 2 hours...................I so wish I could look into the future and know what is best for him

Poor Franta -i have some antibiotic tablets i could post if they are any good ?

He could have picked something up from the Vets i suppose or it could be airborne .
Hope he picks up soon .

Smartie gets a bunged up nose due to his herpes but i usually use a make-up pad , dampen it and wipe the nostrils to clear them -i have to do this most days .

Thank you all, very helpful.

He has not had cat flu in last 5 years althouigh I vaguely remember a vet at some point saying that he may have had it in the past, something to do with one of his eyes, although I also think a vet said he had a minor heart murmor and yesterday the vet said he had no heart murmor.

It could be heating cos its gone warmer .

He was vacinnated against cat flu until 2 years ago when it was stopped cos of his seizures but as he was in vets overnight last week I wonder if he picked up something there!

So many bloomin options.

His bloods showed he might have a minor infection and he had a very slight temp, looks like I will be off to get the abs syringes on Monday unless it vanishes over weekend. I wasnt given them yesterday cos vet wanted to see if he improved after steriod injection and appetite stimulent.

Vet is closed until then unless its an emergency and dont think it is at present, will keep a good eye on him.

Does he have a history of cat flu in the past? If so it sounds like he's going through a shedding phase bought on my stress at the vets. It should settle down on it's own gradually.

Poor Franta.

When Alice had it, the vet said it was an upper respiratory tract infection and gave her a convenia jab. Other possibilities are a tooth infection or dry air caused by heating (dries the sinuses out causing runny eyes and other cold-type symptoms). Alice was the same a few weeks ago but I let it pass this time as she was eating fine etc.

Gill hugs to Franta and you.

When I read your other thread yesterday, the 1st thing that I wondered whether he had picked up a "bug" cos these things tend to be airborne.

If the vets are open, perhaps telephone the vet and explain the sneezing and bunged up now  - think he may need different antibiotics.

Cat Flu/Cold/sinus probs?????
« Reply #1 on: December 11, 2010, 12:44:21 PM »
Franta as many of you know had a recurrance of his seizures a couple of weeks ago and although they have stopped he has now started with a runny nose. loss of voice, gagging when eating.

Saw vet yesterday and had bloods, nothing wrong, very slight temp but last night started sneezing and he is trying to clear his nose by blowing through it.

He was in hospital at vets for 24 hrs a week and half ago and his deteriation started about 5 days later but runny nose started a couple of days ago.

Any thoughts please especially about his nose.
