Just looked up the ingredients on Mysupermarket and smoked salmon is about 2.5% salt, 0.5% is classed as high for a human! Noah goes mad for raw bacon but I only ever let him have the tiniest bit (except when he helps himself  ). Claire cats cannot digest vegetable oils AFAIK.

Next time, I'll maybe soak it in water before giving it to the cats to try and wash some of the salt out. Funnily enough I've never given the cats bacon due to the salt content but never really thought about it for the salmon.

Never knew that about the oils either, will it be harmful if it can't be digested? I've read a lot of people mentioning that they feed their cats fish in oil as a treat  :scared: It's always been about a teaspoon, and most of the oil has been squeezed out maybe once a week or every couple of weeks. I wouldn't want to keep doing it if it's going to be bad for them though, have you got any links or anything about the oils being bad?

I ended up giving them all a little bit last night because they were trying to eat my fingers (the smell was lingering still after two washes)!!!

Just as a little treat because all 4 of them were going mad for it...never as proper dinner though...WAY too much salt!!

They were back to their usual JWB and Hi Life today and no treats lol

Smoked fish will also be cured which usually involves a lot of salt so giving a bit should be ok but not lots.
Please consider the harder to home cats in rescue.

I bought some smoked salmon for Valentines breakfast bagels this year, Pepsi went absolutely mad for it so I let her have some. Like Sam said, I don't think any salt is added when smoking so should be ok, I only gave a few little scraps anyway. I give them tuna in oil every once in a while as a special treat too, gives a lovely soft shiny coat :)

smoking shouldn't make it salty.  smoking is done by burning wood chips.  Salting or curing will make it salty.

Personally I would let them have a bit .... a little of what you fancy and all that.  We have always given our lot smoked salmon and it's not done them any harm.  Obviusly I won't recommend it as a main meal ... although Zephyr would disagree on that he would be perfectly happy to eat nothing but smoked salmon and tiger prawns all day, everyday!  :evillaugh:
