Shelly,  I really feel for you,  what an awful thing to happen.

This may be contraversial,   but the lack of an emergency vet would be a very big decider in what cats (if any) i took in if I was running a rescue,   we don't run a rescue but have had to use the emergency vets on a number of occasions with our own cats at home,   there is no way on this earth I would keep a cat at home who's lips were blue and it's feet were cold,  I would be driving up and down the country to find a vet that would see me out of hours if I had to.   This little kitten was doing so well and then he suddenly became ill and died all in the space of a day or so there was obviously something that very wrong.

I am sorry,  I am not normally this blunt,  but how on earth can you run a cat rescue without emergency vet care being available ?

I am so sorry to read this Shelly and know only too well how you are feeling.  By the sounds of things it was something far out of your control and most probable outcome as it sometimes is.  I've been through it myself and it never gets any easier.  It is also the reason why I now don't even take reservations on kittens until they are at least 6 weeks of age.

I am really sorry to hear this, and shocked to hear of a vet not providing emergency cover, I thought it was mandatory in the UK to provide some cover, even it is just a mobile and they will meet you if urgent. RIP little one

I think that if, as it seems, you don't have access to any emergency vets (and I believe it is now compulsory for all vets to offer emergency facilities, whether on their own premises or by referral) it would be better in the future to transfer acute cases or particularly vulnerable animals to a rescue that does, Shelly, don't you?

Poor baby  :'(

Are there no emergency vets in your area?

Our vet works alone so is not on call, we are registered with the same vets as our local cpl &  rspca.

He wasn't looking too good yesterday afternoon, his lips were blue and his paws were cold. He wasn't taking his feeds very well, not like he did anyway. And he was not as lively. I couldn't do owt till monday but if he didn't pick up i was going to take him to the vets. I was syringe feeding him glucose water to try keep his strength up and added extra heat in his bed via a microwavable heat pad. I held him on my chest and cuddled him after his last feed. I think we both knew he had no fight left in him.

Sadly the little fighter lost his fight, he passed away in his sleep in the early hours of this morning aged 5 weeks. I did everything i could to save you little man but sadly it just wasn't enough :(

5 weeks old now and he's got a good set of lungs on him and he's very demanding when it comes to feeding time. He is not quite ready for solids he spits it out and much prefers the bottle. So i'm having to syringe feed some mashed up food a few times a day until he gets the idea.

I'm still not settled on a name lol

Quick update, she is turning out to be a he now his genitalia is developing. He is now 4 weeks old and still fighting.
I am trying to get him on solids but he is having none of it and prefers the bottle. He has his eyes fully open and is walking round the dining room floor all be it at a wobble pace and trys to run up to any cat in close range. He squeals when he wants feeding and gets very grumpy and pushes his bottle away when he's had enough or if its not flowing quickly enough.

I will get some more pics when i can get him to stay still. lol

What a fantastic achievement, she's beautiful  :Luv2:
Have you given her a name?

At least the people who found her cared enough to do something; I guess it's a case of 'out of sight, out of mind' with them though.

I'm originally from Ilkeston btw (but pretend to be more posherer these days  :evillaugh:)

A little update for those interested. The little lady is now around 20 days old and still fighting. The ladies who brought her in did not leave an address for us to arrange to trap mum or to get them a spaying voucher. They did promise to call to see how the little one was doing but up to now they have not rang back. I did have a number in my mobile but it is swallowed up by other numbers i ring so it would be hard to pick out their number without having a name attached.

1 life has been saved which is better than none. My heart misses a beat every time i go to open her cat box thinking she may not have survived another night. But she has proved time and time again that she is a fighter!
I am a small rescue trying to do my bit by rescuing unwanted and abandoned cats/kittens and returning them back to full health and getting them spayed/nutured before finding them loving forever homes. I have cats here that have needed love, care and patience for 6 months or more to bring them round enough for them to be able to be placed for adoption and get their well deserved special home.

I have no funds or donations coming in but each cat gets the love care and attention that they need.
Some cats are being adopted and a few weeks later brought back through no fault of their own. It's extremely frustrating because there is so many more cats i could help if these cats did not return. But no matter what i don't turn them away. So we are right back to the begining trying to find them a new home. A few cats have come back more than once.  :(

Sorry for the essay but i just felt the need to say that.  :-[

And thank you JS for putting an update for me.   I have been very busy with the kitten and moving my daughter from Ilkeston to Derby. And iv'e been diagnosed with a prolapsed bladder.  :-[  :(

Attached picture taken when she was 14 days old.

I don't think Shelly will mind me updating. The little girl is still proving to be a fighter. Sadly, the people who brought her in and said they'd return to give Shelly more information on the Mum cat never did, so the poor lady is still out there somewhere and Shelly has no way of knowing whereabouts to look from what I can tell.

I much prefer stories written by the Grimm brothers  >:(

I'd have thought the thing to do is catch mum and reunite her with the kitten before it's too late. She doesn't sound feral so should be fine in a pen if she's nervous.  ;)
