Thanks everyone, huge difference in my we boy this week. he is a lot more stable and the side effects pretty much gone, just odd one now and then. hopfully get his blood test resukts back sometime this week and mabey see about reducing his dose, the vet is concerned about the effects on his liver so will be monitored closely thankfully

Just wish his sisters behaviour towards ollie would improve

Ollie is picking up, the side effects seem to be wearing off so starting to get my we boy back. we still need to keep a close watch on him as he falls every now and then and he gives a blank expression now and then, no more seizures so far but i keeping a diary of his behavior and any changes so we and the vet can monitor it

having to change the way we give him his pills now as he getting wise to each way after a couple day. the joys

Just hope he keeps improving

i wish i could but the blood tests need to be done every two weeks and the results decide on how much his medication is reduced

unfortunatels its just a waiting game.

Its making me so sad seeing my we boy like this as i am so used to him constantly being a my feet and always looking out in case i trip over him.

With the meds affecting little Ollie so badly maybe the vet could see him sooner than Thursday - I hope he is feeling better soon

Ollie is booked into the vet on thursday for blood tests to see how the medication is doing. apparantly they need to be careful as it can affect their liver.

The we man fell of the window ledge in the living room this morning so i really hope they can reduce it. just so scared he hurts himself or he breaks his legs

I would speak to the vets to see if the dosage could be reduced very slightly, as it is affecting his quality of life. Fingers crossed.

I believe there is very little choice of what medication in cats and hope that the dosage can be gradually lowered and the side effects will go

Hi Sheryl its the phenobarbitol Ollie is on also. He has to go for blood tests every two weeks. he is on a high dose just now due to the severity of the fits. It was the Small Animal Hospital who uped his dose, apparantly they dont like giving the phenobarbital unless realy necessary due to the bad side effects.

The poor we man has been falling all over the place tonight. Hopefully in time they will beable to reduce the dose in time.

Due to the amount and severity of the fits thats why he on a high dose

we all been through a hard time dealing with it just hope now he can start to get his life back to some normality

If you are having problems with side effects from the medication, might be worth asking if the dose can be amended OR if there is an alternative - some drugs just don't suit some people, I can't see why it isn't the same for cats!

My sisters cat is epileptic and she went through a really bad time with her until it was diagnosed. She is on daily medication now and it is all under control - her medication doesnt space her out and "touch wood" she hasnt had a fit for a long time. She has to go for regular blood tests to make sure they have the dosage of her medication correct and to check there are no side effects from the medication. She is on Phenobarvitol now but was origianlly on drops called epifen (sp)
She lives a totally normal life - sending little Ollie lots of love and hugs and healing vibes and big

Ollie was having several fits one after the other over a 6 hour period thats why the vet took no chances and refered him as an emergency to the Small Animal Hospital in Glasgow. It just opened in september and is meant to be one of the best in Europe, He was referred put in high dependency unit in the neurology dept. They ahve done loads of tests and are certain its epelepsy. Jis neurologist was outstanding and keeps calling me to check how Ollie is doing since he came out of hospital. Some of the tests they did were sent abroad and took just about a week to come back and also done the MRI scan and one where they take sample of fluid as close to spine. They are going to keep close eye on him due to the amount of fits in such a short time as very unusual. The neurologist has gave me her no in case i get worried

The tablets are having major effects on him, he totally sedated and his hind legs keep giving way, he used to be so active even though an indoor cat.

Just like your cat Gill he started youlling and dribbling at mouth then the fits started and losing control of his bladder as the fits started getting more frequent he was getting more and more distressed.

The vet and animal hospital were both fantastic and both keep calling for updates
I just wish i could sort things with tyler as she being so horrible to him and thats nearly 2 weeks since he came out of hospital

i still feel an absolute mess as my we baby just lyes about doing nothing all day and seems so sedated

when i looked at the tablets he has they are also used for us humans

I dont know if I am the member that Christine is talking about but I do have a cat that has had a number of fits, although it wasnt recognized aas this.

I will try and dig you out the link to Frantas illness which started in Feb, he is not diagnosed as epileptic but could be but by chance my vet found that 7 days of injections of an Ab called marbocyl helps him and after day 3 or 4 he stops having fits.

Due to his age of 16 and him being a birman, he has not had an MRI cos its thought that the stress may kill him as he also only has one working kidney.

I have done a lot of research on epilepsy in cats and it is very rare and its a toss up it seems cos the meds can have bad side effects but one needs to stop the fits cos as you know they are absolutely terrible to watch.

How many seizures a day did Ollie have and for how many days?

I will add Frantas thread link and you will find a total documentation of his three bouts of seizures to date. I have to say that because the injections help I would not counternance him being treated as an epileptic because I dont think he would have a quality life but that is just me and most of the vets he has seen have noted that I am not willing for him to be MRied and want the marbocyl in the event of an attck.

Last time he had the first injection only a couple of hours after the seizure and he had less seizures and got better quickly, he is being treated as having an infection in the brain but it could be a tumour or even epilepsy.

I wish Ollie lots of good vibes and hope the effects of the treatnent wear off and understand the stress cos I am living with it every day cos never know when its going to happen but the effects sound the same as for Ollie

Please keep us uptodate with Ollies progress. I have a rectal tube of diazapam in ther fridge in case he needs to travel while fitting, cos the first time he had two in the car and that was even worse than at home.

Thanks for that. Hopefully she wil calm down. Feel so sorry for Ollie he totally not his self and his sister bullying him is not helping.

The poor we guy has a shaved head, two shaved legs and a shaved neck.

Not found much info so hopefully someone with experience will beable to share their wealth of knowledge.

I have no experience of epilepsy in cats, but I suspect one of our rescue members may have.

I can say, though, that Ollie's sister should calm down when Ollie's personal smell signature returns to normal - she'll be reacting to the smell from the veterinary unit, I suspect.

Hi peeps had worst couple of weeks

My we ollie started to seem unwell. He would lye on couch then make yowling noises. So being concerened i called vet on the saturday and made appointment for monday.

The sunday night i had just gone up to bed and suddenly i heard loud banging noises and my husband screaming. ran down stairs and Ollie was fitting and weeing all over the places. The 2 of us managed to calm him down and called the emergency vet and had him there in about 20 mins. the vet checked all his blood and temp when we were there and all seemed ok. she gave us some rectal diazepam in case he fitted again and told us to call her if it happended again

overnight we stayed up with him and he took another 3 fits during the night. poor we soul was a mess, the diazepan helped. the next morning we took him back to vet as vet said she would put him on phenobarbital since he has taken so many fits in such a short space of time. later that day he seemed unwell again and i called the vet. she said she would look after Ollie overnight to keep an eye on what was happening. when i took him down to vet she thought he seemed to unwell for her to look after and admitted him as an emergency to the glasgow university small animal hospital neurology dept.

Ollie had mri scan and has been checked for all infectious diseases after spending the night in high dependancy unit and it has come back thay he is epeleptic and has 1.t tablets twice a day of 15mg phenobarbital.

Has anyone any experience with epileptic cats as i heard that its not that common. He is still very spaced out and his we back legs keep giving way on him which i beleive is a side effect of his medication and desperately hope this will pass

Since he came out of hospital his sister has been totally rotten to him. she never ate for days and is hissing and growling. have tried feliway diffuser and the spray and she still being rotten to him

What a nightmare i have had, been totally stressed to the max
