I may phone them tomorrow, or better still an email and post it here  :evillaugh:

They probably won't say the same thing by email  :shify:

I have phoned the  :bum: pca before about birds and they have been helpful. Maybe they feel a cat has to belong to someone and it will eventually go home?  :-:

Is it worth asking the lady I HC yesterday to foster while she waits for her permanent cat/s? - I got a really good feeling about her. She would have to watch the front door though as I know newly caught strays can be very quick  :scared:

Don't forget she has a spare bedroom she could use. There is a possibility that she could get attached and so we could lose out on a home for FIV or older  cats though.

Places can change and charities can clean up their act when it's becoming apparent they aren't functioning to the capacity they should be. I can't guarantee what the centre is like that I helped in now, but I do know the main people that seemed utterly indifferent to animals mental wellbeing are still working there.

I can try and put a photo of Libby on here if people want to see the sort of dog I'm talking about. I named her when she came in, and tried to socialise her to the best of my capabilities. She "gave off the wrong image in the runs" because she barked at people that went past; she just wanted them to stop and look at her or talk to her. :( There wasn't a vicious bone in her body.

I think as I said earlier, it is the main call centre that gives out this "advice"

I see they deny it when challenged.

It certainly is sad what JS said and I know people who have been to the RSPCA in Bradford and it's not the nicest, friendliest place by the sound of it.  I know when Smudge was missing the RSPCA in Halifax were greeat - they were always contacting me with black cats they'd found and just a call to ask how I was doing.  I always had to keep pestering the Bradford branch and I knew for a fact that they had a black cat in because the mother of a work colleague always pops in there and she took a photo fo it for me.

On a good note for the RSPCA in Halifax.............

They took 10 year old Bonnie away from her previous owners because they neglected her when she had a rash and the RSPCA had to remove her tail and give her injections etc. and it was 9 months later when they tried to re-home her.  I fostered her for 4 days and I fell in love with her and adopted her.  My Smudge was missing and I was on prozak and she saved my life and I saved hers.  So THANK YOU RSPCA FOR BRINGING BONNIE INTO MY LIFE.

Mary

I have actually had good experiences with the RSPCA when I have been the cats have been very well cared for by very caring people.  Like you Mary I too have been to the Halifax RSPCA and  spoken to a fosterer for them and they were great as were the Leeds/Wakefield branch.  We actually adopted our Squeaky from them years ago and I have recently visited.  I am saddened at what JS said  :( I wonder whether it's certain branches?  However, I have found them less caring regarding phone calls for help and have another rescue too.

We are taking them  :sneaky: (not that I am doing anything personally but others are sorting it  :) )

Luckily the girl had a bit of savvy and made other calls after speaking to them but so many people are told when they phone about strays to "leave it alone, don't feed it and it will go away" etc - I have heard stories like this so many times - they can't all be liars.

In the days pre CatChat I had a "stray" hanging round my back door and when I phoned "the large national charity" to see if it had been reported lost I was told to not feed it / ignore  it and it will find it's way home!!! Needless to say I ignored the advice, took the poor little creature in doors and made enquiries myself.  Thankfully I was able to locate the owner and reuinte them with kitty.
In ancient times cats were worshiped as gods; they have not forgotten this.

I worked at our local ***** ;) about ten years ago - it was dire. There was no socialising of the animals, I was witness to the "it's a stray, stop feeding it" phone call and perfectly healthy animals being put to sleep purely because they didn't give the right image in the runs.

Not to mention, they lost six months of course work when I left it there to be countersigned, so I never received the animal care qualification I should have...... :tired:

I think a lot of it is because they know that the smaller charities will pick up the pieces unless as you say Mark there is some publicity to be made from it

A lot of it is relying on people to be prepared to give written statements etc which is difficult. Also, their legal department probably has a bigger budget than other charities have for total budget. I'm sure they are a force to be reckoned with.

Another thing, I'm guessing this is the kind of "advice" people are getting on the main line as I'm sure it isn't the same on a local level?

The sad thing is, these people are supposed to be on the animals' side  :(

Couldn't someone gather stories from people who have been badly advised or given no help and then they could be challenged in the press based on peoples' actual experiences?

They are a heartless organisation,  I really wish there was something that could be done.  They do preach about things that they have no intention of doing and like you say Mark,  but they are all over a case if it is potenially going to make them funds and gain them publicity,  what about all the people that have to pick up the pieces behind them,  they dont give them a moments thought do they !    oh dear,  I will step off my soap box now

I think it would take more than a journalist. They are almost beyond reproach and given so many powers. It would need a lot of legal knowledge as it would be like challenging a dictatorship. I think someone would have to think very carefully before committing anything to print unless they were 100% sure they could prove it. They really scare me  :scared:

There are already things like this set up but they are so powerful it is frightening http://cheetah.webtribe.net/~animadversion/

Edit - having looked at that site, I don't agree with a lot of their arguments but it is just an example of one of many.

With a mum and 5 kittens in her garden that it might be possible to take the mum but the kittens are considered "roaming strays" and there is a law preventing them from taking them  :tired: - what hope is there?  >:(

I really think they need "outing" on the national news - if enough people will make statements about them, people might realise that it is nothing more than a propaganda machine  >:(

btw - this is a student who has been away and returned to find the family in her garden. Credit where it is due, she said she will be leaving soon and didn't want to add to the stray population.
