One of ours was 15 when we got him over a year ago and it is soooooooooooooooooooo satisfying not only to give an old cat a nice home. Plus he is the perfect cat (for a small flat)- he sleeps about 22 hours a day, wakes up, has a cuddle and then goes back to sleep. He is the only cat I have ever had who can outsleep me at night. Give me an oldie any day!!

Excellent!! We have had an 8yo that has been with us since about Nov/Dec time, gorgeous longhaired patched tabby, yet not one bit of interest.

We are on a roll today Sue one of the fosterers has just rung to say she has homed a 6 year old who I only put on our site a couple of days ago. Even at that age some folk are not interested.

We have some waiting to come in, but they are all cats that are in home environments, so we like to try and home them directly from their home to avoid them having to come into care - and when they are coming in cos of their owner dying it is actually sadder for the poor cats in my opinion, they have to adjust to so many things. Think the oldest is 13/14 - if her description had been right, she would have already been placed in a home, but sadly the lady had got her colouring wrong.

we dont seem to get that many over the age of 12,

How lucky are you. This year so far has been our worst ever for the number of oldies needing to come in.

I always think it's really sad when oldies are taken in though -

It is although in Toms case his owner died, so bringing Tom is was the best option. Also the owner of Tom  needed  to go and work in the  USA  for many months. He actually was heartbroken when he handed Harris in especially as the mans wife had died recently and she also adored Harris.

Sometimes the real oldies can win with the sympathy vote, its the 10-12 yr olds that can take longer to home.

The Friday before last, I went to Coventry RSPCA to see a 14 year old boy listed on their Catchat website (he had only come in on the Tuesday).  I went back on the Sun pm, only to find he had been reserved 5 mins before!

IT is sad Susanne, some of them really struggle with that upheaval - when Molly initially came to us, she was fine at first, and one day, something snapped in her head, and she realised she had been 'abandoned' and turned nasty. Can't belive it now, as she is such a nice tempered cat, she only growls and spits, she doesn't mean anythign by it. And Tiger just cried constantly all the way from her house to here, all she had known was one owner and one house.

That's great that those 2 are off to a new home and a new set of slaves  ;D

I always think it's really sad when oldies are taken in though - to have a home for all those years then find themselves homeless and taken away to a strange place must be so much upheaval for them.

The shortest any of our oldies has been with us is 8 weeks and 4 days.

We have been very lucky with Tom and Harris as Tom came in on 6/1/07 and Harris 13/2/07, I must admit I think this has been the quickest we have ever homed 'Golden Oldies' Although  a17 year old went to the Derby HQ shelter and was homed within 3 weeks. However, as we know they get loads of people visiting every day so the cats get a better chance.

Well, the last one who contacted us had been told from a different rescue that her 11 year old wouldn't stand a chance of getting rehomed, which as most of us on here know, simply isn't true. The shortest any of our oldies has been with us is 8 weeks and 4 days.

I could fill my house up today with oldies that people need homing for whatever reason

I think that will go for everyone in rescue. What makes me mad is many rescues  tell people that older cats won't settle, what rubbish. It must be just so they are not blocked up with cats that are sometimes a little harder to home. Although the two we have just homed have only been in care a very short time and someone saw their pics on my web site.  Of course they were in separate pens, so Virginia the fosterer tried them together and they accepted each other immediately.  When I have kittens come in it reminds me why I  prefer the 'golden oldies'

That is wonderful news, it is good to hear when oldies get homed - too many people think that any cat past the age of 10 is going to be hard to home, we have managed it a few times though. Sadly peoples misconceptions of this 'group' of cats make it hard for us to take in all the ones that we get calls about, I could fill my house up today with oldies that people need homing for whatever reason

They are being homed together today.

original post:- Today we are homing together 2 x 13 year olds who came in through no fault of their own, Tom is 13 years old whose owner died and Harris whose owner has gone to live abroad. As with any cat 12+ we pay for any problems that are age related. The new owners are responsible for boosters, & flea and worm treatments.
