I'd leave him alone.
There is going to be some swelling. And he will be annoyed if you 'probe' there (can't even imagining one of mine allowing such a thing!) But I expect he's fine. Hurting and sore, but fine.
Keep an eye on things (though maybe from a bit more distance), and if things don't improve in a couple of days go to the vet. But until then.... he's fine. His body is just reacting with the normal response (think of yourself. Cuts swell. It's the body trying to repel bacteria and heal itself).
Good on you for being so vigilant and caring though. Always better to err on the side of caution.

Charlie was neutered on Feb 8 last year. I don't often get the opportunity to poke round his posterior but did so today and found two lumps, one at each side. He didn't like me touching them but didn't appear sore. Could they be remnants or does he need the vet AGAIN?
