Reading your post, Blackcat, makes me realise I must clean my glasses - I just read "erratic" as "erotic" - I suppose not entirely inappropriate

Starlings can be quite shamelessly prolific but I too am concerned that this is a little late in the year. However i have also been reading quite a few reports of animals breeding out of season due to the erratic weather patterns. If you count back to when the eggs were laid, it was still quite surprisingly mild, if not Indian Summer-ish, so it probably just put them off their game. It is quite possible that now food is getting scarcer, mum and dad have turfed the younglings out because they are unable to feed the mob now it is a bit more wintery.

Hope the little starling survives .... We have them nesting opposite us - in a hole in a wall where a brick has fallen out!!  I think as long as they are warm and there is a food source, they continue to breed.  In Jan 2008 we had pigeons nesting, who raised twins - quite a novelty as there were no leaves on the tree and we could watch them grow up.  Oh, by the way, young starlings are brown .....

Came down stairs this morning to find Archie had just caught a starling and had brought it in.

We managed to get it from him inspite of his growling.

We placed it on top of a large hedge but unfortunatly Archie managed to get it again.

We managed to get it again and this time I took it to the out of hours vet who was great.

He noticed it was small and thinks it had fallen out of a nest. Amazing considering the time of year.

There were no obvious injuries and just hoping the little one makes it. If so it will be sent to a wildlife rescue centre.
