I pay between approx £5 and £6 a month for each of my cats. They range from 3 to 6 in age. I do live in a fairly rural area so guess that has some impact on the cost.

Without reading through all posts, does anyone know if it's cheaper if a cat is an indoor cat? As when I got a quote for Jameson with AXA they said £11. Which is a lot.

Excellent - ny renewals come through next month so be interesting to see what they say as made no claims!

925 Dancer - you were quoted over £20 for one cat? Really?

I just took out cover for Nina with Axa and she is a 5 month old pedigree kitten and they are only taking just over £7 a month with AXA - I do have multi cat discount but not that much!!! I have never heard such a high quote - maybe try it again as maybe there was an error!

I think I posted in this thread before to say how pleased I was with the Axa policies that I took out on my cats after reading some reviews here last year. Well I'm even more pleased now. I've just had the first annual renewals through and the price has actually gone down. That never happened when we were with Direct Line who we changed from because we got poor cover compared to Axa and the Direct Line policy was actually more expensive. I do get the multi cat discount so that helps but am really pleased about this.

I did make a claim on Dino's policy this year so will just be interested to see what his renewal comes in at.

Well I cancelled my Tesco policy but before I got more insurance Chilli went missing and now I'm emigrating. Just got a letter from Petplan for free cover with the micro chipping. As he will be here for longer than me I though I may as well get a policy set up for this year so he's covered before he gets to me in NZ. I cannot believe how extortionate the policies are! Axa and Petplan were £20 odd per month. For one 7 month old cat. I realise I live in London but my last policy for Chilli was £11.

Do we think I should just go for one of the lesser policies as he will be here less than a year anyway so won't need the ongoing treatment policy past the first year if he does have a condition?

AXA are better than Sainsbury's at the moment, I changed Molly after Sainsbury's put the excess up - AXA pay more than Sainsbury's too. It is better to set up insurance online though, as you normally get a better discount.

Changed Bunty online last night she is now with Axa  :) others to follow soon

Hunnie I understand when Bunty went missing I phoned E&L who she was with at the time to find out about advertising for a lost cat etc which is something that had in the insurance and I got a "Nope you aren't covered bla bla bla" and in my blur of tears I never want to deal with them ever again - robbing  :censored:

I have just changed Bunty to Axa, ironically Sainsburys is through Axa but I called Axa and went through it all with them and have changed her to Axa now for a different cover.

The problem I had with Tesco was because it was per condition up to an amount or a calender year they didn't pay out for Bertie's second bout of amenia (even though it was not ongoing anemia but rather likley something else causing it!).

So his second bout which lead to more vet trips, out of hours, tests, then eventually him being pts despite being only 9 was not covered at all  - at the time it was just a blur of tears but I never want to have to deal with that again. I still remember now the call from them explaining they had tried as best they could to ensure it was covered but it wasn't....this was until the March (claim was put in in Jan) as they had tried to hard (they said) to settle my claim!

No insurance pays for death from illness over a certain age - they pay euthanasia and tests, but they dont pay the purchase price like they do with younger cats. I can't remember what age AXA is, but as my two are 16 and 18, I didn't take much notice.

The rescues vets have had similar problems with PetPlan, I should have posted that yesterday

I will be changing all my cats to AXA.       Most of my guys are with Tesco and never ever had a problem with them but I so like what I read about Axa, Bunty my elderly girl is with Siansburys and she is going onto Axa as Sainsburys prices and excess have risen plus I got a letter from them saying death from illness or accident after 10 years of age isn't covered - erm I took the insuranmce with Sainsburys as she is an elderly cat  >:(

Sainsburys is getting cancelled this month and renewed with Axa.

Tesco's will get cancelled when Vesti's claim has gone through.

I just signed my new addition up with Axa last night - although I put her age in wrong at first (I thought they wanted the D.OB not the age) and the quote for her age six was £7 a month - however when I fixed it to her actual age it was £9 a month - so for all three (two 12 year olds and the kitten) it is nearly £30 a month - however I am happy with the piece of mind the cover gives.

I got burned with Tesco with Bertie and would happily pay the more to know everything is covered!!!

My vets aren't keen on PetPlan because they have found they put the surgery through a lot of questions before paying out and take a long time to pay up. I got their policy free with 4 of my cats as they came from CP but I switched all 6 of my cats on to Axa.

I pay just over £6 a month for Bronte (as the 1st insured cat). Bronte is 6 and in good health. I pay just over £5 a month for the other 5. Dino is 5 years old and the others are all 3. I used to be insured with Direct Line but when I started comparing insurance and reading the threads here I realised it wasn't giving me very good cover and they were actually more expensive than Axa. I also found they took a long time to pay out for Dino's tail op and put my vets through a lot of questions. When Dino had his skin problem a few months ago Axa couldn't have been nicer and paid out really quickly with no hassle.

The only warning I would give is that if you go with Axa and pay by DD then make sure you check the paperwork when it comes in. It will nearly always include a form to say they haven't been able to take the DD and need you to sign a Direct Debit mandate. Its happened me every time.

The only annoying thing with Axa is I did it all online and then a letter cam. I didn't really read it but apparently, you have to fill in a direct debit and sign it. I don't know why they ask you for bank details online and then ask you to do it again on paper
Anyway, after 3 months, thye sent a letter saying they would cancel the insurance unless I sent a direct debit form in.

Exactly the same happened to me too, but I didnt notice for about 4 months, and I couldn't afford the whole chunk so I had to cancel it and start again. Thankfully nothing happened in that time  :shy:

I'm with PetPlan and I currently pay just under £19 per month for my 2 2 year old boys.   I am so glad I took it out as last year Harvey had FLUTD and it took him 3 months to recover from it so had huge bills.   This year we discovered he has a heart murmur and again this has cost a lot of money.   It has cost over £1,000 in vet costs for Harvey in the last year (and then there's vaccinations on top of that too).

i think axa are good and they paid out in just over a week for franta which is very impressive for £666, i think. his is a possible ongoing claim and involved more than one problem, but only one excess as i thought it should be.

they have paid out for a referral of his xrays to bristol for a second opinion and vet is still waiting to hear from bristol. i have to ring her on tuesday cos she is chasing them.

I use pet plan although it was cheaper 4 cats at £28 its now gone to 33 per month which has annoyed me somewhat

Our old cat is with tesco and the one that returned is not insured yet, Mind you we got the dogs insured with e -sure, theyve only gone and put it up £50! per year for a scruffy mutt and more for the lab because we live in an area with high car crime!

not very pleased, would go back to direct line pet if they hadnt been so rude last time

Does anyone know, if you dont have your pets vaccinated can you still get insurance with an exclusion? or do they just refuse

Just checked some quotes with AXA they are very competative and if you dont vaccinate they just dont cover anything that could have been prevented by it. Far far better IMO than any of the others Ive used.

Thanks for recommending

ETA under £30 a month for 5 cats with axa, very glad I came on here tonight LOL

AXA have paid up  :Luv: and they've paid all of the bill (minus the excess). So chuffed with that as thought they would exclude his food and laxative paste which they didn't  :Luv2:

AXA cover prescription food for the first month of the condition, thereafter its not covered so if its a temporary diet its fine, but if its ongoing they don't pay out further.

Indoor only would increase chances of some things so probably best it isnt taken into consideration! Indoor cats are often fatter and more sedentary so prone to bladder probs and then obesity often leads to diabetes so they would probably end up costing more

I've had to decide against insurance for the time being, because of the cruelty around here premiums are fairly high and no-one takes into account they are indoors only... and as I am only on sick pay at mo I just can't afford it, instead I have a Kitty Banck where I am putting £10 a month in for them

I changed to AXA when Sainsbury's put their premiums up - I dont want to pay the first £125 for the girls, as that would rule out a lot of the minor claims (i.e. it cost under £100 for PEbbles to have 2 x-rays). They were very good and paid around £150ish for Mabel even though I had only had her for 5 weeks - she became ill 3 weeks after adopting her and even thought it was quite advanced cancer, they never quibbled it. You do have to watch their Direct Debit forms though, they have just had to take 3 months worth out for Zi as I forgot what they did with Molly and Mabel and didn't contact them. They do get quite a bit of money back though Gill, Molly has been insured for 2.5 years with no claims at all, they got 3 months worth of premiums for Ginger with no claims, although they got claims for Pebbles, Tiger and MAbel.

I would be wary of Petplan purely because they change the excess once they hit 9, and their payout isn't as high as AXA.

I prefer PetPlan, it is more expensive than the average insurance company but I am thrilled with how much they have paid out for Bambi, as I would rather have paid the extra for full coverage than risk it with a cheaper coverage, I pay for PetPlan SuperCat plan which is the best one, it costs me £18.19 a month, but I think it is well worth it as so far in the last year (only had Bambi since March 08) they have paid out around £3000 on her medical bills including seeing a specialist in Cambridge. So I am very happy, would deffinatley recommend to anyone.

If you're already with them then yes they will cover ongoing conditions. Its when you want to change insurers that the new insurers won't cover any existing conditions.

I phoned Axa and checked that it covered ongoing conditions and they said yes. Its £7000 a year for all conditions buts starts again and covers all conditions again. So if Amber developed something that needs ongoing treatment they would pay £7000 each year Im with them which sounds ok so I renewed

Oo MM didn't know that about the condition. I wonder if Lexy having had surgery to remove stones might affect that though? When it comes time to renew in April I'll be asking around. If I can get a better insurance package then I will, Lexy has been cystitis free (fingers crossed) for over a year now.

I would suggest petplan or AXA (i use petplans 6k policy) a few have posted AXA putting up premiums so dont let the price be your main factor, i did that with M&S and they screwed us all  >:( even sainsburys have changed excesses  :tired:

If your cat gets an ongoing condition you cant move but suffering once from say cystitis dosent mean petplan wont cover it, they have a time limit that the cat needs to be fine. Lola has a years block on cystitis or bladder claims but with letter from my vet will be offered cover next time round.

Petplan also support charities so its nice for an insurance company to put some money back to the cats  ;D

Tabs, your 7k per year is a ok, if it said per condition then you would worry  ;D
