Now I am really confused because when I looked this morning - had a quick peak at work, I thought it said 797 members. Just now it reads 792 members - what has happened?

Yes you are right Helen, many are lurking for ages before joining and others join and then watch from the outside until they have something important to say.

I think the volume who have joined is very impressive in such a short time and I think we have about as many active members as CC did before it closed but they had nearer 4000 registered members!

Also just because somepeople have only made one or two posts doesn't mean they are not actively reading the site. I lurked on CC for ages before posting as had never posted on a forum before (I know, look at me now!). I think a trend of newbies introducing themselves is that they say they have been avidly reading what's on Purrs for ages, sometimes people only post when they have a specific Q they would like answering.

All forums have inactive members, the total number is still impressive. If the same proportion is active as in a forum with, say, 50 members, that's a very active forum, so while 700 members doesn't mean 700 active members, it still means something.
