Yup, if there's the slightest chance they're not well, it's too the vets we go. I'd hate it if they were ill and I'd provaricated. Thats a big old word for me on a Wednesday too.

glad everything is ok and i guess a consult fee is worth a peaceful mind !

As for ideas on why resp rates may differ , i dont know really but i guess humans resp rates prob differ aswell, perhaps he's not quite so inwardly fit or maybe carrying a slightly higher bmi than his bro ? (they both look the picture of physical fitness to me mind you

)

One of my vets once said to me that he would rather have someone like me who rushed their pets in at the first worrying sign even if it was nothing, than someone who left things and made it harder to treat. Glad Bilbo is ok.

Thanks for the messages all. I do feel a bit of a fool when the vet says that the boys are fine, there's nowt wrong with em, but I'm big and ugly enough not to let it bother me and I'd rather that than them be ill.

Rosella - I asked the vet if Billy's weight was ok and he assured me it was fine, Billy is just burly

Glad to hear Bilbo is okay - I have to admit that I am like you - I would take any one of my cats to my vet even if they only seemed slightly off colour or if I was at all worried. As far as I am concerned, that is the responsible thing to do. And luckily we've had the same vet for 15 years so he only really charges us when he absolutely has to. I think we should be charging him to hug our floofballs - he makes a right old fuss of them!

I clearly remember watching that programme Animal Hospital, with Rolf Harris, on the television and they showed someone bringing in a cat that could hardly stand. They said it had been like it for a week, and also hadn't eaten for a week so they thought that maybe they should seek some advice. I was aghast! A whole week of not being able to stand?! I would have been on the phone to make a vet appointment the moment I noticed anything awry . . . . . . .

I took our Dingle to vets many years ago when I discovered a solid lump on her side. It seems it was the hicken she had eaten earlier that was in her stomach

I once took Sweep with a lump in her throat. It was the normal bone ( adam's apple thingy ) Vet examined her, but her back in her basket and said, Bye Bye Linda!!! He didn't even charge me, bless him!!!

My vet told me once that he'd much rather see a cat whose owner had a slight niggle about its health, so as to reassure. He wasn't thinking of £ signs, either: just knew what a worrier I am

Well, took him to the vets anyway - I know I know, I worry too much - and the vet examined him and proclaimed him to be in fine fettle. He'd also put on almost a kilo since his last weighing too! Bilbo I mean, not the vet.

Still dont know why he breathes quicker than Baggins though. Any ideas Lynn? Do cats respiratory rates differ much?

Ta very much Lynn - thats exactly when he does it, when hes napping. I checked for wheezing and there was none, so hopefully all will be well.

I hate taking him to the vets too, hes terrified. Baggins on the other hand wanders about purring, having a good old beak at everything

doesnt sound like anything to be worried about carl, if he's in a light sleep then perhaps he's dreaming, or perhaps (like cody) he's quite warm ie if he's cuddled into you. I know cody can have what seems like slightly faster but more shallow breaths when he's napping.

I just looked here - http://vetmedicine.about.com/od/diseasesconditionsfaqs/tp/TP_catfacts.htm - it says the 'normal' respiration rate for cats is between 16 - 40 breaths per minute.

Hopefully it's nothing untoward and the vet can put ypur mind at rest

Thanks Helen. Not too sure about his normal rate, its one of those things, to my shame, that I've never noticed before.

The fast breathing isn't really after he's been playing, but rather when hes in a shallow sleep.

Hope it's nothing too serious - it might be that he has a mild chest infection or something. Is it after he's been playing? What is his normal breathing rate to compare it against?

Hullo folks, looking for a bit of advice if you could help ...

I've noticed that since yesterday, Bilbo seems to be breathing fast now and then. Not constantly, but when he's sat next to me every so often I'll see him breathe fairly fast. His rate is about 36 breaths per minute when he does this.

Now I've booked him in for a check up tonight, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what it could be? He's eating, playing, fighting with Baggins all as normal.

Thanks for any help. I reckon my mind is running away with me again, I'm worrying that much.
