Hiya,

And here's a picture showing how well the Moldovian Mountain Cat's markings have evolved towards camouflaging itself to blend in with the local scenery  ;D

I have it on expert advise from the President/Vice-President/Treasurer/Social Activities Organiser of the Moldovian Cat Club (of which I am proud to announce that I have a membership number of 2) and second hand car salesman, Mr. P Malanetsky that the above picture contains several of these exquisite cats seen here in their natural habitat. At least that's what he told me after relieving me of my annual membership subscription.

Well, the line from the film seemed quite apt, given that it's the second show in a row that I've had issues.  :shy: Sometimes a dab of humour makes you feel less frustrated.

Leigh's post is just so desperately funny!  I'd love to see a show manager try and deal with that written on an entry form.  :evillaugh:

And Pearl *ALWAYS* does me proud!  ;D Thanks for the kind wishes folks, you all make a good show result that much more special.  :Flowers:

Well Done to You Both  :Luv:

btw
Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me
This line, spoken by Kenneth Williams in Carry on Cleo, has rightly been voted the funniest one-liner in movie history.
Sky Movies, whose website gives the top 10 in the voting, polled over 1000 people.

Incidentally, this line was not written by Talbot Rothwell, the credited screenwriter for the film, but by Frank Muir
and Denis Norden.

As Wikipedia records, Rothwell was struggling to meet his deadline, so Muir and Norden gave him some old scripts
from their radio series Take It From Here that included skits on ancient Rome. One of them included the immortal line.

Blimey!, what a saga Witty,

Congratulations to the beautiful Pearl on her triumph. There's a lot more to this showing lark than meets the eye isn't there. Do you think that I could enter my pink and ginger coloured Moldavian Mountain Cat Frankie, my yellow and blue stripped Senegalese Singing Cat Alfie and my extremely rare turquoise Tibetan Tapdancing Cat Suzie?, all as pedigree British Shorthairs of course!

Well done to you both.

Gill, it is the judges' responsability as well as the show manager's to ensure that cats are entered in the correct classes. In the pedigree section, a cat entered in the wrong open class will be disqualified or wrong-coloured as a matter of course. However it seems that despite us household pet exhibitors having to abide by the SAME competition rules as the pedigree exhibitors, the judges and show management do not appear to apply those rules with the same degree of strictness.

As for the black-based torties, black is the colour that is mixed with the ginger to give you the standard tortie pattern - and it is therefore seen as the "default" tortie type. You've also got blue-based torties (blue-creams), c.hocolat.e-based torties, lilac-based torties and tabby-based torties.

The Americans describe torties differently to us - brindle and calico. The brindle doesn't have any white and is the classic tortie swirl of black, red and cream, whereas the calico is what we'd call a tortie and white. In non-ped open classes, all these black-based torties compete against each other in one open class irrespective of how much white they have on them. The non-black-based torties i.e. blue creams compete in AOC as they are far less common and would not warrant them having their own open classes.

Basically, the AOC open class is for all the bizarrely-coloured cats that don't fit anywhere else...  :evillaugh: That is, as long as they're not half-pedigree - those have their own open classes too, though some exhibitors seem to not have appeared to notice...  :shify:

Ok well I still confused. You said that the cat was entered in the AOC class as a calico and the judges judged as that. So how come the judges didnt say it was in the wrong class?

How can they be judges if they cant tell that a cat is in the right class or not, or is it the description of the classes that is so bad that nobody can tell?

I mean how can a calico , ie a white cat with a few blodges of black and ginger be a black based tortie when they are predominently white?

As far as I know there is a very big difference in the show world between what i would call a black based tortie. ie one who looks more brown than a cat like Sasa, and a white tortie like Sasa. In fact I read in that book.....you know the one lol...........that the white flash on the calicos nose was an important part of its calicoism

I have also read that the calicos were judged on the mask on their face and the placing of the blobs. Maybe they dont get so technical in this country but I can understand why there are some human cat fights at shows!

Jo, the open classes for non-pedigrees are pretty self explanatory really. They usually two sections for the adults - longhair and shorthair, but the colour splits are the same. These are:

black and black & white
tabby and tabby & white
ginger and ginger & white
tortie and tortie & white
any other colour

It usually says in the show schedule that the tortie classes are for black-based i.e. non-dilute torties.

A friend of mine has a longhair c.hocolat.e tortie and she does compete in the AOC LH open class.

OK now Gill is not the only one confused. If AOC includes blue-creams (ie dilute torties) why are torties not included. Is it simply because there is a separate class for Tortis and so they are not lumped in with the leftovers (sorry Pearl), and if so, why are not blue-creams judged in the torti class??? No wonder people get confused and put things in the wrong class - I would have difficulties with that one myself!

Whats the difference between a white and tortie  and a calico?

Errrrr, there isn't a difference Gilly - calico is what them folks from across the pond call tortie & whites.  :tired:

AOC = Any Other Colour. Usually is blues, blue & white, white, cream & blue-cream, so there is no way Sasa would ever be in the same open class as Pearl.

:censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: :censored: wouldn't have been enough to describe that sinking feeling!  :-[ At least it all got straightened out in the end.

Pearl did well though and I'm proud of her! :)

First , well done Pearl and you are looking a bit  :censored: off

Second I dont understand what AOC stands for and calicos are torties but mostly white, so do they divide calicoes away from other torties and would sasa have to compete against Pearl if she was showing?

Whats the difference between a white and tortie  and a calico?

Well done Pearl! Though I am confused that a cat can win a rosette when it is entered in the wrong class. Surely it would not gain sufficient points if that was the case!  Anyway, all sorted in the end, and a great result for the lovely Pearl! :Luv:

Infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me! (ESCS Show)
« Reply #1 on: January 05, 2008, 22:10:02 PM »
Ooooer, what a palaver! I’m not going to forget today’s ESCS show in a hurry as it was a truly bizarre experience.  :-[

Pearl won her open (eventually) and had a first, two seconds and a third in her side classes, but it’s a loooooong story. The fickle gods of cat showing have really got it in for me at the moment… (Infamy, infamy, they’ve all got it in for me!)  :faint:

Put Pearl in her pen and gave her a quick brush before judging. She had Sue Sue (a white girl) and a bunch of kittens to her right and three tortie & whites to her left. Didn’t think anything to it and went to pick up my catalogue and watch the judging from the side of the hall. It was when I went to look up the results on the board and mark up my catalogue that I and a few other exhibitors noticed that one of the torties had been entered in the AOC class under the description of “calico”.  :mad2: :no no:

Invariably I got that same sinking feeling that I had at the National.  :oh noo: :Nooooo:

Of course, the said cat (which was white with some black and ginger splotches) had gone and won the AOC open class, with Pearl second and Sue Sue in third. Along with this open win went a trophy and a BIS nomination...  :brokenheart:

So I decided to go and have a quiet word with the show manager about it, whereby the reply to my query was that all he has to go on what the person describes the cat as – in this case a calico – and thus take it as given. All he did was say it was a fait acompli and offered apologies but little else.  :sad no:

It then transpired that someone had their hands on a catalogue from last year which showed that the cat in question was actually entered in the tortie / tortie & white open last year.  :mad2:

An experienced HP exhibitor went back to bend the ear of the show manager and after a long discussion, all the open class rosettes and prize cards were removed, not just from all the cats in the tortie class, but also for the AOC class. The tortie cat that was in the AOC class was moved to the tortie class and both classes were then rejudged – this time with all the cats in the correct classes. Apparently some folks weren’t happy…  :um: :Dont know:

The cat that was originally entered into the AOC class ended up winning the tortie class – a shame for the cat that won the tortie open originally, but had all cats been entered in the correct classes in the first place, the result wouldn’t have been any different.

Of course the AOC class was rejudged as well (poor Pearl was at the end of her tether by then, bless her) and she beat Sue Sue for a second time to win the AOC open for the second year running and retaining the trophy that had originally been awarded to the other cat. Her other first place was in the shorthaired cat shown in best condition class – of which I am ineffably proud.  :yesss: :wish: :blow kiss:

Pearl also got considered for BIS but missed out on best shorthaired adult in a head to head between her and that bloomin’ tortie… Actually, this tortie was a truly lovely cat and she went on to take the overall non-pedigree BIS.

But it was a frustrating and bizarre day, but in the end, things did get straightened out some. I think it proves that showing can be a strange experience sometimes and that well, you can’t take anything for granted – every time I’ve gone showing, I’ve experienced something different. But after today, both Pearl and I are tired and frazzled and poor Pearl’s patience had worn a bit thin with all the shenanigans.

We’ll feel better in the morning, I’m sure.  :ok:

Amusing moment of the day was capturing a red silver tabby and white Exotic that had decided to take advantage of his mummy’s moment of inattention and go for a constitutional around the show hall... :evillaugh:  He didn’t object in the slightest to being picked up and he purred like crazy as I cuddled him and held him like a baby and he purred away, bless him. They’re such plush cats I can understand why they call them teddybear cats…  :cuddle:

Anyway, have attached some pics of madam from today.  ;) :blow kiss:
