Very definitely, Smokey and Josh - Pearl agrees with you entirely and sends lots of  :blow kiss: and thinks the folks who call you both grey are  :stupid:

She insists I attach a very comely photo of her good self (her good side, naturally) and says that isn't it brilliant that the Blue Quiz Team are slaves to such wonderful blue cats!

It's a grey - the horse, that is. It probably started life as a dark grey with dapples and faded as it got older ...

She's gorgeous, a fine example of a grey cat  :)  I guess you'd say she's actually 'gray' though being from the US  ;D

Our dear Smoke is English (and it shows) she was adopted from the shelter down the road, and every day I'm glad I picked her since she is such a sweet cat.

Um, could be gray or grey my spelling has gotten worse since being over here and trying to adapt to the extra letters or strange spelling's you guys have ;)

Xanthe is supposed to be silver tabby and white - however most of her body is dark grey at the moment with silver markings (she seems to betting (no she doesn't gamble! I meant getting paler gradually). She's not blue, but my brother's dog is!

This thread is hilarious

I agree with Reynard re the technicalities, but I guess you can call your cat whatever colour you want.  However, grey and blue are really just 2 ways of saying the same thing - they don't refer to different shades of 'grey'.  If you entered a 'grey' cat into the hhold section of a cat show it would be described as blue - because in the cat fancy grey is called blue.  The same as ginger is called red.  But outside of the cat fancy I guess you can call your cat sky blue pink with purple dots if you like  ;D

Thats what I was starting to think, Blue = Grey & vica versa

Can we not just say the lighter shade is grey.

Anyone who ownes a grey cat you are not allowed to perch, stand up for ya babes. Unless you do think of them as blue.

Harry is a dark grey with lighter grey running through his coat and he is tabby, I going to check him out.

Ooops  :evillaugh:

A blue cat will have a blue / slate tinge to the coat. You folks are hoisting yourselves on your own petards by admitting the fact...

Also, just to prove a point, and you guys can look it up for yourselves:

The genotype of a standard grey or brown tabby is: A-B-C-D-iiT-/tbtb (the difference is in the polygenes)
The genotype of a blue tabby is: A-B-C-ddiiT-/tbtb
The genotype of a solid blue cat is: aaB-C-dd
The genotype of a blue & white cat is: aaB-C-S-dd

So any cat with the dd gene is blue irrespective of whether tabby or not. Simple and easy to remember. The D gene will either give you a black cat (aa i.e. non-agouti) or a grey / brown tabby (A agouti)

To quote from "The Book of the Cat" (ISBN: 0 330 26153 3)

"The tabby is in fact a complex colour built up from two component patterns, one superimposed on the othet, that are goverend by two sets of genes. The underlying pattern is called Agouti and is a universal grey camouflaging pattern found in a great majority of mammal species, most notably the rabbit. It is composed of hairs with a bluish base and a black tip separated by yellow banding. Because of the backwards slope of the hairs this produces the freckled greyish colour between the tabby stripes."

Here is a pic of my bridge baby Zookie would she be considered blue then ...I had her down as a dilute tortie ????

Wow, she's gorgeous (I seem to be using that word a lot but if the cap fits :wow:). I'd say she is a dilute tortie but the main colour of her fur is grey - in my humble non professional opinion  ;)

This is my Gizzy.... On her vaccination certificate the vet has described her as 'GREY'.  ;D

Sylvia, Gizzy is a stunner - that's a great pic of her  :)

Very good point about the vet records (more evidence  :sneaky:) Lukey and Riley are down as grey tabby and grey & white.

This is my Gizzy.

Before she moved in with us, she used to live with our neighbours across the other side of the road.  At that time we didn't know what her real name was, so we used to call her Grey Kitty, and we have always thought of her as grey.  On her vaccination certificate the vet has described her as 'GREY'.  ;D

Occasionally she does have a posh day (usually when the sun is shining) when I think her coat looks blue.   :evillaugh:

They should do Gilly, the grey tabby is also known as the wild coat variant - look at pics of a Scottish wildcat i.e. Felis Silvestris Grampia and that's your basic grey mackrel tabby.

Grey is a SPECIFIC description of the tabby ticked hairs of the basic tabby coat pattern. Blue describes a completely DIFFERENT form of colouration.

A standard tabby is a grey tabby - find yourself some cat books and look it up.  >:(

I don't need to get a book and look it up! The poll is not the technical definition of blue or grey - it's what colour are these cats  ;)  Grey seems to be the consensus of opinion at the moment  ;D

Lilycat, Imogen is a beautiful grey tabby  :Luv: :Luv: :Luv:
