Blackcat - I had the same problem with Norton.  Couldn't uninstall it, didn't recognise my subscription and sod all help from their "helpdesk".

Horza and Nick helped me out with the bother I was having.  Have got AVG free edition now and it's fine (touch wood).

By the way, how do you find out what edition of IE your computer uses?

May i add   as a free one if you must  AVG is the best    Though would revomemend to all  to use  (spybot search and destroy )  This is one of the best ant spyware around most of all its free though donations are welcomed for any amount   just put (spybot search and destroy ) into google etc and you will get the download site   ;)

yep - mine is NOD32 and came highly recommended by my computer techs in NZ who I had a good relationship with. You can get a free 30 day trial and then the fee is very reasonable ('cos its in NZ dollars tee hee)

If it is any consolation my computer also went weird on me last night and the BT help-desk (with whom I am on first name terms with at this stage) told me it was the Norton Firewall that was blocking my access to the web. I have turned it off and turned on the Windows one on the basis that my preferred antivirus software also has a firewall and so am back on line. I am planning to ring the tech support people who came free with the new computer to uninstall NOrton as soon as possible (tried to do it myself but could not find Norton as an option to uninstall). There are some very strange things happening on my computer (old and new) and at this stage I have just resigned myself to paying for a tech support service to help me fix it as i go along ...

nope windows unfortunately leaks and all the best hackers now ways in :(, how many people are using IE6 there is no more security patches being done for this you need to upgrade to IE7, and even if your using IE7 it uses a Microsoft gadget called active x, this alone allows script kiddies to run malicious script on your machine :( websites and emails don't help but even reputable websites get hacked and there code compromissed.

Norton is bloated, slow, easy to disable, easy to go wrong and they (Norton) even know of a two viruses they haven't bothered to fix due to it affecting Nortons software to do so

Yes it is possible to hack into your PC, anti virus on its own will not stop a hacker (correct term is cracker, hacker is a programmer, is digress).

unplug from internet and see if still acts weird, what anti-virus are you using? (please don't say norton :()

whats wrong with norton? thats what i use?

Karen I'm so sorry you havent a tent. If you didnt send me your address through PM or e-mail I wouldnt have know you still wanted one. I can still organise that though if you still do & send me you address with full name please. Payment through Paypal is ok if you have this or I shall have to ask for a cheque first. Sorry to ask that.
I went & got another 10 as my breeder friend wanted some for kittening pens making 12 in all but could still send you one as I need to go back to 'IKEA' to take something back. Ugh!

In total I have had in my hands

42
