It's easy to find, Mark. In the pedestrian high street, top of the hill, a few doors down from Mcdonalds.

Ive been to look.  There are three separate cages of kittens, two pens  in the front of the shop, the kittens look around 12 weeksish.  One cage at the back amongest the rabbits, parrots, budgies, rats etc etc, the kittens look younger, and are marked as British shorthair crosses, three of the kittens were just laying down,  the other three were playing, one of the three laying was laying in a dirty litter tray.  I couldn't see if any of the sleeping kittens were poorly or had bad eyes.  The kittens at the front had clean litter and fresh food and water.  Whilst I was looking another lady came in and looked and was saying 'poor little things shouldn't be in here'.    I go into Margate quite often so will keep an eye.

Lucypersian, the RSPCA inspector should call you with an update if you requested one, but........ Ive reported a particularly   bad case in the past where the cat was badly injured and was left with skin hanging off his face,  The new welfare law wasn't in practice then so the Inspectors hands were rather tied, but all he did was give them advice on taking the cat to the vets and neutering.  I have history with these particular people and cruelty case in the past, they are known to the RSPCA on a number of complaints surrounded Cats, dogs and rabbits.  Infact they had dead rabbits in their garden left in hutches for weeks, according to a neighbour who kindly kept me up to date.   Hopefully know the inspector can take a bit more action. On hindsight I wish Id of taken the cat myself for treatment., but went through the proper channels because I hoped that this time this people may get some sort of conviction and their animals taken away.  They use their animals as breeding machines to make money.

The local  Animal Rights group  here are active and do campaign successfully against pets being sold in shops, last year a Ramsgate petstore was stopped before it even started.

edited to add - there were more kittens marked as british shorthair crosses today then, looking back at the original post!

I'd go in there as often as possible and if anything is amiss report it and make a note or the details and date.  When it comes to renewing the licence the council might think twice if there have been several problems since the last licence was issued.

I know the shop you are speaking of, and they have lots and lots of kittens throughout the year unfortunately  >:( the asking price of these particular kittens is actually low going on what Ive been told of their normal charges usually £120.  I have also been told they are looking to extend the shop, but how true that is I dont know.     There is a newish shop in the area that sells kittens now as well in Cliftonville, they mainly specialise in parrots and birds, I did go in for a nosey and to my surprise recognised the new owners as traders from elsewhere.   I missed this yesterday, or would of gone to look - I may pop in today and see what the kittens look like and if there  is one at the back.

Thanet is up to its eyeballs in cats and kittens  in rescue looking for homes, the local press have run quite of few stories of late about the kitten crisis here.

I hope the little one with the bad eye is ok now....

There's a shop in town that sell kittens  >:(.. However they do have licence and apparantly the RSPCA do regular inspections on them to check it's fine (I have seen them in a couple of times)... I hate seeing them all barred up though and really think it should be illegal all together...

You can check with the council that they are licensed to sell cats.
A letter to the local paper and a protest will soon stop them - or compaints to the council to stop the licence being renewed.

Lucy if you want to get him to stop then print 100's of leaflets and get some friends together to stand near the shop and get as many people to boycott them as you can.

If you damage his profits then you get action.  ;D

Well, guys, I have come hot foot...!

I think maybe the RSPCA have done their job, OR someone had bought the poorly kitten, OR.... don't want to think about that one.  :( I saw 5 kittens. All slightly differing in age, suggesting 3 litters to me. There was a sign saying "More kittens at back of shop", but I couldn't find any more...

The ones I saw were 2 Black, 2 B/W and 1 Tabby. All appeared to be a decent enough age to be away from Mum. They had clear eyes and botties. The tabby and blacks were playing energetically and the 2 B/W were curled up sleeping. Trays were clean - wood based pellets, and there was food and water. I wasn't too sure about the food (biscuits - can you get kitten biscuits?  :-:). So the food issue was really all I could question.

I didn't speak to the guy because I didn't want him to remember my face - I can see me having to go back there again...  >:(

Not an ideal set of circumstances, but these remaining kittens look healthy.  But it's still not illegal to sell kittens in pet shops.  :(

Well done for that - let us know what happens. Hopefully it will put the shop off selling kittens - I hope they get a big fine.

How sad  :(  The new Animal Welfare Act dictates that animals should receive prompt veterinary attention if needed so I'd definitely report them to the RSPCA.

Taken directly from the Act:

(2) For the purposes of this Act, an animal’s needs shall be taken to include—
(a) its need for a suitable environment,
(b) its need for a suitable diet,
(c) its need to be able to exhibit normal behaviour patterns,
(d) any need it has to be housed with, or apart from, other animals, and
(e) its need to be protected from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

Hello Lucy
definately call the RSPCA! They should take action.. I have heard some terrible stories about that pet shop.. Also try Thanet Cat Club as well.. But you will need to act quick as Pet Shops dont like publicity like that, and they may have a terrible fate lined up for them..

Let us know..

Also try Thanet District or Canterbury Council.. they should act quickly...

I went to a pet shop in Margate today, there was about 12 kittens for sale, 4 half british short haired, they was selling them for £65 pound, one of the kittens had a sore eye it looked like conjuncivtis, they was curled up, not lively at all, it was so sad to see, i wanted to take them all home with me. pet shops should not sell kittens its wrong >:(
