I thought he looked more like a wild kitty than a Bengal .... obviously being an F1 (does that mean he run's fast as well! ) he's pretty close to his wild cousins!  Probably a bit too close for my liking.

They are stunning but personally I just prefer my moggies but then I love any animal whatever.
Please consider the harder to home cats in rescue.

Yes i knew that F4 and onwards were best.

All the bengals i have known are very loving but not very good with other cats!
Is this the norm ?

Yes, although, like any animal that is born in captivity to parents who have also been born in captivity, Zeus probably became a wonderful pet to the people who could afford him!!  The Sultan of Brunei owns some of Esmond's bengals but I don't know who bought this one.

Early generations are very hard to breed from because they are so often sterile.....so even though you might have an Asian Leopard Cat as the Sire, the resulting progeny might very well be unable to reproduce.

Bengals are considered 'wild' until they become F4's (fourth generation from the ALC) and as such, although extremely valuable, are not able to be entered into competitions.  They can only ever be shown on the exhibition bench.... Even insurance is difficult to acquire for them.....although I'm not as well up on this now as I used to be...it may have changed by now.

Of course, the bengal is now so well established as a breed in this country, that F5's or F6's can be truly spectacular and more representative of the bengal breed standard that has now been judged to be desirable than 'Zeus' could ever be...He is just an exceptional, rare and truly beautiful little kitten who really is a 'one off'  .....  so as rare as the most precious pearl.

Best wishes,

Roz

Am i right in thinking that an F1 is not far enough removed from the wild to make it an ideal pet ? (not too up to date with the gradings)

Hi everyone,

For those who may be interested, that little bengal kitten was bred by C. Esmond Gay, very well known in the Bengal world for all sorts of reasons and not always for his cats!  He was one of the first importers of bengals into this country and was a good friend of the breeder who bred my first bengal, my beloved Ruby, an F3, who broke my heart when she was killed on the road in 2000.  Esmond is quite a showman, is often in the newspapers and does breed some exceptional bengals under his prefix 'Sarez bengals' . He has, however managed to upset a lot of the Bengal breeders, including Ruby's breeder.  I know why, but cannot divulge the reasons on this Forum.

You will see him advertising in all the Cat Mags claiming to have sold to all the 'celebs'....which is true, he has!  I remember seeing Rolf Harris collect a little bengal kitten from him at the Supreme Cat Show in 1996 or 1997.

The 'cub' you see there was called 'Zeus' and was sold for £100,000!!! a couple of years ago.  It is an F1 bengal which is very, very rare.

Hope that info useful.

Best wishes,

Roz

He looks more like an ocelot than a typical Bengal.

Absolutely gorgeous.

We get one or two Bengals in, only last week someone rang and asked me If I wanted to buy. So the fact that someone will pay a lot of money does not ensure a good home.
