I agree totally Susanne. Bubz can be a very difficult feline if she opts not to eat food that she's been happily eating for ages.. The price put me of even trying it

Im awaiting response form Natures Menu & Town & Country who make Hi Life. I cant email Nutro, its snail mail or phone, i really dont do call centres

so i cant follow this up!

Theres alot of cats with natural CRF who could test foods, they tend to have regular bloods done so it wouldnt be an additional nasty for the cat, shame the companies dont see it this way!

Milly's Mum - yeah, I've read all the stuff about the Iams tests, wouldn't touch them or anything they go near with a bargepole now. I don't mind animal testing if it's stuff like some of the FIV tests in the States - take an animal that's already ill and see if you can cure it (provided it's done humanely obviously) - but some of the stuff Iams commissioned to see if their food was working was horrific. (e.g. deliberately give cat kidney problems, then feed it Iams, then kill & dissect it to see if the food helped - in some cases dissect while alive).

Does anyone know if Nutro is OK? Picked some up for the pooch the other day to keep her going until the next Trophy delivery. I know they've just got natural stuff in, it's the testing bit I'm not sure of..

Magpie (in my avator) was involved in whiskas taste tests. I can't remember how I got involved but I think I answered a questionnaire at some point about cat food and they emailed me to ask if I (and one of my cats!) would take part in taste tests for the new, improved whiskas! They sent some tins and I had to feed him a different one every day then fill in a short questionnaire about how long he took to eat it etc.

He did it twice and certainly liked it. I hardly every fed it to him though after the tests

Yeh - most companies do taste tests so it's knowing who does invasive testing and who just does taste testing.

Em- Whiskas have food trial venues where they let people see what goes on. Its the labs commisioned by the parent companies who are hiding their activities.
I accept that taste tests are neccessary,(those cats are the lucky ones) its the mutilation that isn't.

Must just be that I've got a really good local franchise then - did you request by e-mail or by phone? My sis requested samples by e-mail and still hasn't had them. With mine, I got the samples really quickly and a follow up phone call a week after that. Might be worth phoning?

It's also worth bearing in mind that BUAV rates Whiskas as a company that tests on animals, but the "testing" involves keeping the cats in a well-looked after cattery where they have a lot of freedom to wander round, and they get to test the food, toys, beds...and I think the food isn't even given to the cats if the human testers don't like it! I believe the same is true of Pedigree/Spiller but I can't remember. BUAV's guidelines are very strict... so I think people should make-up their own minds really, it has to be down to what you can get hold of and afford, not to mention what your pets will eat. Guess I'm just really lucky!:D

So not very impressed. The problem is if you avoid products that are owned by companies that test you are left with a very restricted choice, none of which seem to be readily available (mail order is not an option for me for main food) and most seem to be dry food which I feed very little of.

Hi guys

THought I'd mention that I had the same questions about 6 months ago. After ferreting around I moved my furries onto Trophy and haven't looked back. The premuim biscuits are £7.50 for 2 kilos which is comparable to other premium brands and the cats love them - all natural ingredients and my beasties are lovely and shiny and healthy. Trophy deliver free to your door and will do a nutrition consultation if you want, and they provide samples. Only thing to watch out for is that you really have to keep an eye on how much they're eating and only serve the correct amount - they're so tasty that the cats demand more straight after they've finished!! (means the bowls are ALWAYS clean though!!) :D:D

Don't know about other franchises, but ours (based in Swadlincote) is great, and they also sell lots of toys, beds, bowls etc etc and do microchipping.

I e-mailed BUAV about JWB when I was looking around and they said that, although JWB is historically against animal cruelty and contains only natural ingredients, they are now own by a company which does not have an anti-cruelty policy.

I also asked my vet about the benefits of 'special' dietary biscuits e.g. Hills, and he said that provided your cat is on a good quality natural food and gets enough water and exercise, they should be fine - and if they're on it from early enough it should help them stay free of stuff like kidney disease and diabetes.

Rebecca/Milly's mum - applaws say their meat is organic and that their fish is dolphin friendly so I'd trust them (as much as anyone else) that it is cruelty free

Don't know about the testing on animals thing though. I think hi life is ok too re the cruelty issue - it's made by town & country pet company ltd, or something like that.

Meant to add they make Olli wet food which is expensive as they only sell it in "ready to serve" bowls. They also make "classic" which is normal price food and sainsbury's sell it.

I think this is the old testing products on animals vs products that aren't tested but are owned by companies that do test.? JWB do not test on animals (other than taste tests) but are owned by Pedigree that do carry out animal testing.? If you want to avoid all products owned by companies that test then you do have a very limited choice.

Yes you can get those treats by themselves.? Ive seen them in pets at home I think.
