Well I clearly made it all sound too easy

because fate threw us a curved ball today.

Yes, we fetched up at 8am to catch the mum and kittens which went off without incident, the kittens are slightly older than we'd been told but are all sweet, partially socialised and ready to be prepped for rehoming, but Mum... sigh... is pregnant.

Heavily so. I can feel a whole massive kitten sitting across her liver and at least one more in there. It's a game changer as we only have one foster pen available.

I call the adoption centre... can I? Would they? What if we....? How about if...?

It works, ten minutes of gentle pressure and the amazing manager pulls out a rabbit: all four kittens can go in tomorrow. 10am? Yes PLEASE!

Unfortunately the vets are utterly jam packed today following an emergency caesarian (NINE PUPPIES) this morning, so we will be back to vaccinate, chip and de-parasite the babies at stupid o'clock tomorrow with our wonderful vet team.

The preggie Mum is now called Penelope and is in the safe hands of Marina in her beautiful guest bedroom (God I hope she's a tidy birth mummy!) although she does have a poorly tum she has been wormed and hopefully her tum will feel better before the kittens arrive, which could be any day now.

Did I mention the toes? Three of these 4 are Polydactyls, the little boy (aptly named Toes) has 25 of them! 25! TOES!

Try counting that on your digits!

OK must get to bed, I've got some serious logistics tomorrow so need to be on my game.

Ahhhh Friday at last.

No chance Hahaha! Relax?

So today I finish work at 2pm, pop round to Ana's to collect Patty Fleur, Morgan and Flint for stitch removal, worming and flea treatment. Patty has a little infection under her stitches at one end so she's on antibiotics for a week.

The boys are doing really well though, good round little kittens with lots of fun in their eyes.

Just leaving the vet and the nurse popped out with a Calypso update: They've done the heart scan and it is sounding much better, the fluid in her abdomen has abated somewhat she's fine to spay so is being prepped tonight!

She will be reunited with her babies for a few days then will be put up for rehoming/ I couldn't be happier for this girl, she's fabulous and deserves this break.

Just leaving the vet when two schoolgirls walk in carrying a cat they found cowering under a van, dripping from the mouth having been surrounded by some boys they thought may have hurt him. He's sweet, but unneutered and rather scared so we agree to overnight him and the vet agreed to check him over. The girls want to name him Brendan. Off they trot, we stick Brendan in a pen and sign the forms to admit him too.

Just leaving the vet when Tad arrived, we needed to get our heads together so sat and went through the jobs in hand, who's who and what's what, then Cat phone rings and a man with broken English explains there's a kitten sitting on his doorstep that he's going to sell if we don't come get it!

so off Tad runs, I set off for Ana's to deliver the kittens and talk her through their medication.

Finally got to Ana's and the phone rings, it's Tad, the kitten she came to collect has been shaved from the neck down, something is very wrong here.

Told her to take the kitten and get the heck out of there. She's safe but it's a funny old world so I'm reviewing our home visit policy in light of this incident.

Tomorrow we're trapping the spotty kittens who will going into Marina's lovely newly refurbished guest bedroom. Bless her she's not even had a guest in there yet!

Then we take stock, finish up some paperwork, get some rest and get ready for a big day on Sunday when Pebbles is being rehomed, Monsieur is off to the adoption centre and we prep for next week.

Thanks, everyone, for the deeply appreciated sympathy.

We move forward, a wobble now and then is part and parcel of Rescue, we must stay strong for the living and those in need still.

Baby is safely out of her spay operation and will be ready to go to her new/old home tomorrow evening.

I get to do the formal adoption honours, which is lovely as I trapped her two older kittens Peter and Jimmy myself and have been acting as fairy godmother to her 6 new beautiful babies. So proud of her.

The three musketeers Morgan, Flint and Patty Fleur are safely with their new foster home Ana tonight.

Monsieur and his boy Sammie are relishing the warmth in the summerhouse. I'm relishing a well deserved beer.

You are all doing such a great job for so many unloved cats and kittens, that must be very rewarding. The downside is that you have far more episodes of loss than many of us face in a lifetime

Still no update on Calypso. The vet asked me nicely if there was any hurry for her op, as they've been incredibly busy. I said no, no rush.

She's safe, comfortable, resting after the traumas of the past weeks and we've found a lovely fosterer to take care of her babies (who are all doing well now).

Baby hasn't had her spay either, as her milk is still very much in evidence. No rush for her either, she has a good home waiting for her so she too can rest up after bringing up 6 beautiful kittens (three of which are now reserved

)

I'm very sorry to report yet another heartbreak, though.

Unexpectedly poor Hero took a turn for the worse. His mouth injuries never really healed and today it became clear he wasn't thriving. I made the hardest decision to put him to sleep and of course I stayed with him while his life left his body.

He was a stoic, happy cat who knew a lifetime of love and care, we made his last weeks as comfortable as possible.

Pursley had become his best pal, they were sitting together having an old people's chinwag this morning, so he had furry pals as well as human ones.

Goodnight Hero. We worked so hard for you, and you were worth it.

No news yet, Our vets are amazing but so busy, Calypso's going to be scanned and xrayed in the morning. The fluid is around her abdomen, she may have sustained injuries from the fox attack, she certainly has a scrape on her nose so she was involved, bless her brave poorly heart.

Meanwhile we've had a local lady offer a foster space for her kids until they're old enough to be adopted. This is great news as she can also take Calypso if she survives.

for the donation that arrived safely today. You are so thoughtful and especially when Boris is also being a brave little soldier.

We caught the whole family of kittens from the dangerous Market area. Dad came in on Sunday morning and Mark went back for young Sammie on Sunday night. All now accounted for. Neutering scheduled and hopefully new location with a friend of a friend in the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside at a smallholding for three to stay together!

GILL THANK YOU! The Tuftyclub are hanging together, thanks. Poor George has a sore foot tonight - there's a bit of blood and it's swollen (thankfully we have Metacam handy these days) so he's off to the vet tomorrow. I suspect he's damaged a claw but he's also pawing his mouth so maybe had a fall.

Sending every good wish for Calypso today Sheila. Poor lamb. It does sound very much like congestive heart failure if fluid around her lungs (assume she was x rayed to confirm this?) Can only hope there is an underlying condition that can be treated and that vet is able to perform ultra sound without sedation which will be dangerous due to her respiratory problems. I know too much on this subject now because of Boris

Boris realises how much all these tests cost and has asked his dad to send some dosh and hope it helps Sheila

She's not pregnant, well not so we can tell... the swelling is fluid retention.

She has an arrhythmia, a strong one, the presence of fluid alongside suggests suspected heart failure. Because she's been in the summerhouse with her kids I've not noticed her breathing but I sat with her in the car for 30 minutes or so after her appointment and she is breathing heavily.

She's booked in for a heart scan on Monday and if she's well enough will be spayed and the airgun pellet removed from her earflap, but she will need a special home where she can live quietly with a very special person.

Fingers, toes and every single paw crossed for this Waltham Forest Cat.

I'm afraid another one of Calypso's babies had to be PTS.

Poor little Mulligan, when the vets sedated him to wash him properly they found his other hind foot was hanging on by the skin alone. Combined with the damage to the toes on his other back foot there's no way he could survive a pain free existence so we had no choice.

That leaves just three.

Patty Fleur is a little black girl with a hole in her flank the size of a 50p piece. She's been sedated, the wound flushed out and sutured. Time will tell.

Morgan is her twin, he lost half his tail to the fox. We think this is an older injury so there have been previous attacks, Hopefully he will be OK.

The last is Flint, he appears to have no superficial injuries and is a bright little thing, a pretty tabby like his brother Pirate. Whether there's damage internally, again, remains to be seen. These guys are coming to me today as our vet beieves they're healthy enough to come out of hospital. My nurse pal Sandra will be dropping by to perform iodine washes on Patty Fleur until she's out of the woods.

Poor kittens, I do hope the remaining ones pull through. I also hope that Pirate's mummy gets the future she deserves once her babies are better.

Sorry to hear that Fancy's mum has to go back to her old home - but very glad there is someone around who can keep a watchful eye.
