Delightful pic of the boys Helen  :Luv2: :Luv2: :Luv2:  They are just scrumptious  :)

Am wondering if Riley might feel a little vulnerable sometimes and just gives Lu a warning hiss to keep his distance?

Whatever the reason for hisses, it's lovely to see him near his bro  :Luv:

What a great picture  ;D ;D

Why do they keep changing his meds?

I think and probably so do you, that acceptance of a new stage in their lives is good and all cats change as they get older, due to health issues, older age etc etc.

You will have all the pics of how they were but this may have happened any way.

 :thanks: all

He's had a few really bad relapses in the last few months, mainly due to medication issues I think, but *touch wood*, and please don't let this jinx things, but he seems to be doing OK lately.

He's due his boosters in May so he'll be having repeat blood tests too and there's a few possible options for his medications, the danger with changing anything is that he tends to relapse in spectacular style with cluster seizures but will have to cross that bridge as and when  :shy:

I took this lovely photo of him the other day, one of the side effects (not sure if it's from the medication or the damage to his brain) is that he doesn't snuggle up to Lu anymore, in fact he hisses at him now  :( It's strange as he can walk past him/be near him say 100 times in a day without hissing but then once or twice a day he hisses at him  :( Lu doesn't react and there's never any fighting but Riley used to be head over heels in love with Lu so it's sad to see the change.

Anyway, the other day he voluntary sat on the sofa next to him  :Luv:

Oh I adore him either way Sheila - before he was my special boy and now he's my even special-er boy!

I know how lucky I am that he's still here and am grateful for every single day, but in the same breath I can't help feel sad at what has been taken away :(

It's sad when our loved ones change. Growing to adore Riley as he is now will be a personal challenge with your memories playing tricks on you. I wish in so many ways You could turn back the clock, and of course I feel your sadness and regret, yet it was your commitment and dedication that has given Riley back his life, and albeit not exactly 100 percent back to normal, he still loves his mum, and will always be your special boy.

So please don't be sad, you still have your boy, he's just a little "checked out" these days.

 :thanks:

The current meds don't make him drowsy as such, I'd say it's more that they take the shine off him so he's not quite how he used to be. He still enjoys being stroked but doesn't sleep on the bed anymore or snuggle up next to me on the sofa, he still enjoys playing with catnip toys but his old action shots chasing after da bird are just a distant memory. I think if anyone met him for the first time now they wouldn't know he was 'ill', it's just that I know how he used to be  :shy: He's probably 85% back to normal and there's no concerns over his quality of life, it's me who feels sad at what I've lost - he hasn't got a clue!

Oh Helen you are such a wonderful cat-mum.    Riley, bless him, couldn't be in a better home and I'm sure he knows it, even in his drowsy state.  It must have been be so upsetting for you to have to put him back on the higher dosage that zonks him out but at least you now know for sure that the old Riley is still in there waiting to get out.  I shall be keeping everything crossed for the new drug to control the seizures and let him be himself.  I think you are wise to delay its start until he's been stable again for reasonable period.

Is he on a lower dose now or did he have to go back to the same amount he was on before? I presume the idea was to reduce his medication?

He's back on the same dose as before, the aim in trying to reduce the dose was to try and get a bit more of the old Riley back. Within 24 hours of reducing it he was purring ridiculously loudly and poking me in the face with his paw at the crack of dawn - something that used to be very annoying but I was over the moon to be woken like that again! There were other positive changes too but since the dose has been put back up they've slipped away again  :shy:

In a few months I'm going to try a new medication altogether, it's another human drug so very little data exists about it's use in cats and it has similar side effects but you never know it might be better for him. I want to have a few months back on the current meds first though so I know it's a long term option if the newer meds don't suit him.

Thanks all  There's been four days since his last seizure and in the past he's managed a good long gap between them so hope he's over the worst now.

He doesn't really play like he used to but likes catnip toys rather than action toys so I bought him a new wiggly waggler - as you can see in the pic his fur still hasn't grown back as the steroids he was on stop the hair growth, he's slowly getting some fuzzy fur coming through though  :Luv:

I, too, was hoping that no news was good news.  I'm so sorry that he's had a relapse and still having the seizures.  I was really hoping that he was more settled now and continuing to improve and get back to the old Riley we all know and love.  It must be so stressful for you all.  How is Lu?  He must be confused, poor lad.  Lots of  for all 3 of you.
