Been the the vet and it's not good. Her legs have gotten worse since Wednesday. He said there's nothing more that can be done and wanted to pts today. I said no and he's said we'll wait until Monday and see how she is over the weekend. I asked about a specialist and he said there's nothing more a specialist could do for her.
Came home and rang round 3 other vets and they've all said the same thing. Nothing can be done for nerve damage.
My heart's broke, don't know what to do now  :'( :'( :'(

Oh Karen Im so sorry  :( :( :( I must say though I am quite shocked that they have not at least offered another opinion from a specialist. Other vets can only go by what your vet has told you.....She does seem to be able to feel something looking at the heartbreaking video.

Maybe one of the more experienced meowmys will be able to advise getting another opinion from a vet college. Your insurance will cover any subsequent checks......

sending you both lots of love and special healing vibes

Karen

Just seen the video, made me cry, poor Jasmine. I would strongly suggest reporting it to the Police especially as this dog entered your home. They may be able to act. I know the idea of reporting these people is terrifying but it needs to be done before another animal or child gets attacked.

I am in the process of taking the owners who's dogs attacked Rosie to Court, infact my letter of 'Intended Legal Proceedings' goes out today, and they only live next door.

For as long as these people think they can get away with being so irresponsible, they will keep on doing it. I have posted a picture of Rosie when she came back from the vets after her attack, her injuries were horrendous. I am sorry if this upsets anyone and will remove it if anyone wishes me too.

Apologies, but this thread brings back memories and things like this get me very heated!

Im not suprised it makes you get heated, I really had no idea that there were so many cats attacked by dogs.................. I hope both Jasmine and Rosie both recover both physically and mentally as they both have such wonderful meowmys

Aw - poor little Jasmine.  She does seem to be coping very well though.  I agree that a specialist would be a good idea as a specialist should be able to give you more idea of what you can expect in terms of her regaining use of her legs, time scales etc.

I agree. GP's know a bit about every illness but will refer to a specialist. I'm sure its the same for vets.

As for speaking to a dog warden, I would say use your own judgement. As much as we all want to see that  :censored: owner punished. He may know it was you and its not worth risking you, Jasmine & the kittens for. I hate to say that but these people can be evil and vindictive (sure you know that  :tired: )

Oh bless the brave little lady!  She seems to be  coping so very well, but I wish that her legs get movement back in them very soon.  I agree that specialist help is needed just to make sure that nothing has been overlooked.

As far as informing against this irresponsible dog owner is concerned, I can TOTALLY understand Karenjet's reluctance to report him.  It's a horrible position to be in, because you're damned if you do, and damned if you don't.  I think that it should be up to Karenjet to decide how to handle this, as only she knows how she would feel and what repercussions might await her, either way it's a harsh place to be :(  Whatever decision she makes, I will respect it and not judge her.  Believe me, it is terrifying being in a position where you 'should' inform on someone who would think nothing of crippling or even killing you and yours in retribution.  My heart goes out to you, Karenjet, and of course to Jasmine.

Very sad to see Jasmine like that but she is grooming and like someone else says doesnt seem unhappy.

I would insist on a referral fast cos the longer this is left the harder it will be to treat. I suspect your vet doesnt have the knowledge to treat even if he knew what was wrong........all vets dont know everything but the best are those who admit this and offer to refer on. I dont think your vet giving xrays will be the answer and specialist help would be the best way forward.

Cats mask pain so well and it maybe that she hasnt got full feeling so she isnt feeling all the pain.

I just want to see Jasmine healthy again, she has been through so much and is so wonderful.

I agree with Lynn concerning the dog and think that action should be taken to report this.

Lots of healing vibes to Jasmine

I do agree with you 100% Lynn my 3 labs have beautiful temperaments and are wonderful with the cats/kittens. I know one thing for sure though if that temperament EVER changed they would undoubtedly be PTS weather it be a child or animal they hurt.

Has the dog owner actually been to see if Jasmine is OK since......... the dog should certainly be PTS next time it maybe a baby in a pram when someone is unpacking their shopping like you were

Please get well soon Jasmine, we are all praying for you

I'm not being funny but thinking about this, I actually think before this dog had the courage to run INTO your house and do this to your cat it could seriously pose a danger to not only other animals but children too.
You said you were unloading your shopping from the taxi so i am imagining the taxi driver might have been a witness also ?

I personally would take this further and contact the police with all your video evidence...I personally feel a dog who will enter a house strange to it poses a bigger threat than a dog who will attack a cat in outdoors.
since you have this video footage (take more) i would send it to both the police and animal prevention (ie rspca).

(i'm not one for a dog witch hunt either but there are limits to what may be a "natural behaviour" and a down right threat to society)

what a brave and beautiful girl she is...... that video made me cry. Im so shocked that the vet has not suggested an x-ray she is hardly likely to try and run while they x ray her poor little darling. I cant believe she is acting like its just the norm for her how brave.

I showed my friend and she said her cat was the same and her pelvis was fractured. she had  to have cage rest for 4 months.

I would ask for a referal too as she may be doing more harm than good moving about if there is a fracture.

Its terribly sad to watch her being so brave................. probably as she has a wonderful Meowmy

give her a kiss from me

That was upsetting seeing the video but she doesnt appear to be unhappy which is great.

Re all the speculation of nerve damage.   Nerves obviously control muscles and muscles move bones.  If there has been a loss of connection in some of these nerves then she will appear to hold herself "oddly" as she quite obviously isnt aware of what her legs are doing, also if some nerves have a degree of stimulation then they may be making the muscles "freeze" on "extension" mode if you like, If this is what the muscles are doing then the bones will obviously have no choice to stay like that as they cant bend without the flexion in the muscles.  They certainly dont look dislocated or anything imo.

I agree that atleast looking into referral may be the best way to go, nothing ventured nothing lost and since she is insured i'd be going the whole hog pulling out every stop, they may have some sort of ideas or tests which could isolate the exact pin point damage and give you a better picture of long term prognosis.

i have all my fingers crossed that she makes an improvement.

Awwww, I just want to give her a big fuss! She's so brave. :) And seems to be dealing well with the lack of movement in her back legs.

I agree though, I've never seen a cat keep its back legs that rigid.

And a call to the dog warden anonymously is definately a good idea. The dog obviously isn't being controled well enough and the owner needs t obe mae aware of that fact.

A big ((hug)) to you because it must be awfully upsetting and stressful seeing Jasmine this way and loads of fuss to the lady herself and the kittens.  ;D

Watched the vid a couple of times. What struck me was the rigidity and straightness of her legs. Cats don't have straight legs, especially the back ones, they sort of fold in three places. To me, as a total amateur, this suggests that her joints have become dislocated. The only other time I've seen such straight back legs was in Grissel, a cat given to me by a vet boyfriend. She had broken her leg and had a steel pin through the joints to hold her leg still; this prevented her from bending it.

It doesn't look as though this is nerve damage (at least not on its own), as the joints would still naturally bend.

If you touch her legs, or rub them, does she show signs of feeling your touch. (Tickle her back paws, cats are usually ticklish there.)

It would be great if you could get her examined by a specialist vet.

Maybe one of the VN's could comment on what I've said - even if they think I'm talking total rubbish.

All the best to you, Jasmine and her kittens.

Also, she moves her right leg. She straightens it out a little at one point, which indicates that leg may recover.

My best guess is that she's damaged her pelvis. An x-ray really is called for.

I'm gonna mention x-rays to the vet again tomorrow. I don't really like to, cos he's the expert, not me. But there's something about the way she's holding her legs that isn't right, then again surely she'd be in pain, and not as content as she is if there were breaks?

I couldn't find a tupperware box that was big enough for her dishes. So I folded four towels into four and put it on that. It grips well to those and makes it easier for her.

Funny you should mention the dog. I have found out who owns it - or my friend knows of a dog that fits the description I gave. It belongs to a family that I most definitely wouldn't want to report, and they would take zero notice of any warnings etc anyway. But my friend seems to think it might be part pitbull. In which case I think I can get onto the dog warden and ask them to check anonymously. I'm going to walk over that way later today and have a look at the dog, my friend says it's usually in their back garden.

So glad to hear she's home and happy!  :Party 3:

The VN's may be able to answer this, but I'm still puzzled why the vet hasn't x-rayed her back legs or referred you to a specialist; though the area you live in may be sparsely populated with ortho/spinal vets.

Maybe putting her food in a heavy dish on a couple of telephone directories would help?

She'll just get stronger now she's home. Hopefully, her legs will mend, but even if they don't, she'll adapt.

Did you complain about the dog-owner, or leave it incase of reprisals?

Main thing is, she's home and getting stronger. Well done Jasmine!  ;D

She did well during the night. She used the littertray - or rather, scraped all the litter onto the floor and peed on that. I don't know why she did that. Still no change in the legs, with the way I see them anyway. But she was hungry and ate all her food, took her medicine, and is purring away when you pet her so she's happy enough  ;D

She is a little fighter, but her legs really don't look good. My friend burst into tears seeing her today.
I think she might have been putting a little bit of weight on them tonight though.

Thanks, Rosiesmum, but Jasmine's never liked taking food from my hand for some reason. And on the rare occasion she does she'll just lift it out of my hand and put it on the floor. Putting it on a box is a great idea!

She's had her medicine and food, and is all set up for the night now.

Aww  bless her heart  time is a good healer and it helps that she has a wonderful Meowmy like you to care for her. Im sending cyber head kisses from all my babies and a special head kiss for you from Milo man

Fantastic news, I'm so pleased for you and Jasmine

With the bowl issue you could use an upturned tupperware box, Tiggy had a raised water bowl for years and never knocked it off (bowl was heavy ceramic though).  If her bowls are light then you could put the tub up against a wall so when she licks the bowl will just push against the wall.

I dunno, Michelle. The vet said not to have the kittens near her much.

Another little problem, her feeding bowls seem awkward for her cos she can't quite lean down properly. Any suggestions of what I could do to make it easier? I thought of setting the bowls up on something but she'd knock it down, I think  :-: I've got no way to get to a pet shop tonight, although I could tomorrow to get a raised one.

The legs don't really seem any better to me from when I took her in on Friday. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose  :(
