Helen, I wish I could give you a proper hug. I keep checking to see any updates, and feeling utterly redundant because I can't do anything to help. Please know I'm thinking of you, and hoping Riley proves the negativity wrong.

I'm sending so many vibes to you guys.

That's an interesting article, Tan.

There are several known treatments for seizures and Riley has only been treated with a couple of them so far. The important thing right now is to ensure he is kept in nutritional balance (I assume he's being drip fed so food feeding is less of a concern?)  He's not, unless I'm severely misjudging this, at the "point of no return" physically, because the vets are willing to try alternative treatments.

The seizures themselves, as I read it, are not life threatening, it's about stopping them quickly before further damage occurs, so a Quality of Life can be assured. Helen, please correct me if I've got this upside-down?

So let's keep those vibes a-coming for more intuitive thinking from the vet. I'm sending the hugest Purrs Vibes to Helen to help bring the wee fella out of this.

Helen hun

did they do other tests today? bloods etc?   been reading a bit on it but ya know what the internet is like and I know he's in excellent hands but there's got to be a way to get him better.
what bloomin caused this :(
Has he had any antibiotics incase infection started this? Virus?
did you say he was on Phenobarbital?

http://zimmer-foundation.org/sch/cse.html

Cats in which Phenobarbital either fails to control seizures or causes excessive side effects may be placed on one of several adjunctive anticonvulsive drugs.  Leviteracetam appears to be a drug that is well tolerated in cats, and is thought to inhibit seizures by modifying neurotransmission.  Compared to other drug options, Leviteracetam has a lower incidence of side-effects, but can still cause sedation.  A recent study of 12 cats with idiopathic seizure disorders found that 70% of the cats showed decreased seizure activity following treatment with Levetiracetam. (24)  Several other alternative drugs are available for adjunct therapy if the cat does not respond well to Leviteraceteam, including Gabapentin, Zonisamide, Felbamate, and Topiramate.  The current health status of the animal, the nature of seizures, response to previous therapy, and financial constraints of the owner should all be considered when determining which drugs to use for adjunctive therapy.

Every moment you, Riles and Lu are in my mind and Heart

Oh Helen, I really don't know what to say ... I've only just caught up on everything from the weekend  :(  I can only echo what everyone has said and agree with the info Tan posted about the research results.  I know it must be breaking your heart to not be able to visit him but I think your vet is probably right.  They need to get his meds sorted and a visit from mummy will over stimulate him at this stage.

Don't give up on your baby ... you know how resilient cats can be and Riley has everything to fight for.  He knows he is loved, has a lovely home and a brother and super Mum waiting for him, combined with his age and overall health the odds are in his favour ... not forgetting the whole of the Purrs family sending positive vibes and prayers.

Come on Riley .... you can get through this

Helen hun Riles and Lu are so close yo all our hearts we are feeling this with you every second. I just want him better and home.

So true.  When you're a Purrs cat you have a whole lot of people rooting for you.  It's not just someone else's cat - I feel a certain amount of investment in the other cats on here so I hate it when any are sick.  I feel every up and down as though it was Jaffa or Mosi.  And I know it must be 10 times worse for Helen.  I'll admit I've been giving Jaffa and Mosi extra huggles this past week and telling them that I love them just a little bit more often.

Helen, we can't give up on Riley at this stage, really we can't.  I've been there, where you are now - when they tell you the prognosis is so poor that you may as well accept the inevitable.  I know how hideous it feels.  And I also know that sometimes - just sometimes - the indomitable will of the cat in question can prove them wrong.  I know things are not looking good, but let's hold fast to the research findings, and for now, let Riley do what he can to stay with  us.

I just don't wanna believe this is happening  :'(  it just can't be right. Helen hun Riles and Lu are so close yo all our hearts we are feeling this with you every second. I just want him better and home.

There's hope hun. all my love devotion prayers are going out to him and you.
Quote
"In the other cases, the researchers noticed that treatment seemed not to work for the first four to 11 days; however, when researchers extended treatment beyond the 11-day duration, a number of the cats responded well.

What's important to note about the study findings is that we should not make plans to euthanize the patients in the acute stage of the disease based on the therapy-resistant seizures and behavioural changes, but wait longer because remission can occur," Pakozdy says.

Things are not looking good  :( :( :(

He has had two more seizures despite being on this sedative plus the other anti-seizure meds. They're going to see how he is overnight but the vet said that things are not looking particularly good and that he is not very optimistic.

Just gutted  :'(

That's little wonder Helen.  This kind of thing is emotionally exhausting.      You're bound to be feeling very fragile, and I will admit that I've shed tears myself for what you're going through.  It's so very unfair.

You and Lu and Riley are a very special threesome, and have a truly huge place in all of our hearts.  This should not be happening, and the injustice of it makes me want to scream with frustration.

Dont give up hope.  We know how much you long to see Riley, and with luck and the strong medical team who are looking after him, all the Gods be willing its not too long before you'll be able to go again and see our beautiful boy for gentle snoozling.

Just so hard Helen and know what hell you are going through and not being able to visit is the pits.

In a way it would be good if they found something else that is making him poorly that can easily be treated as there must be a reason for his temperature.

Thanks again for everyone's kind thoughts, it's very much appreciated

Have heard from the vets this morning, he has been anaethetised/sedated with a different drug this time and has remained seizure free whilst unconscious. They've had to replace his catheter as obviously due to his bladder surgery they can't be manipulating it to express him manually. Apparently his temperature is up so he's going to have various tests today (chest X-ray, scan of his belly and blood tests) to check that there isn't anything else going on. It could be that his fits will take time to get under control or it could be that they're not able to be controlled - it's just a case of wait and see  :( I asked about visiting him later today but the vet didn't think it would be a good idea at this stage as firstly he's sleeping and secondly they need to keep him as quiet and unstimulated as possible.

I feel absolutely crushed by all of this and go between feeling numb and balling my eyes out. I'm just wishing the hours away until the next update and hoping and praying that it will be a positive one.
