Trust me Gill there are several people who feel this way and that's why I came over here to have my rant as I can't on facebook.  The lady in question leaves tonnes of food out ALL year round so all the local pet cats ,etc come for a feed as its a known food source.

At the moment we need to keep her on side to make sure that we can get any and all stray cats she is caring for at the moment or doesn't realise she is.  Some people just believe that feeding an animal lots of 'good stuff' = care.  They don't realise they aren't doing enough for them.. just think they are doing the right thing giving a stray cat food rather than thinking you could tell someone and get them seen and into a home.

We always give people this advice but as we are coming into the time of year where more and more seem to appear then we are going to try and get more awareness out there to help these souls.  The thought of more suffering out there and possibly dying alone and afraid breaks our hearts.

That woman needs telling.................she caused a cat to suffer and die because she didnt get him help. Ok he probably would have died anyway but he has been so much pain which was unnecessary.

thanks guys.  The general feeling is that it has been there for a long time.

When we looked at the neck wound more closely and cleared away the debris and discharge we actually found the wound was much larger than any of us thought and also the top layer of skin had regrown back at the edges and actually into the wound giving a clear defined hole in his neck.  So it was a very old wound to have healed itself so well at the edges.

We asked the vet to document his case but I have to say it makes for very distressing viewing.

Certainly the hair loss has been gradual and the whole right side of his face was badly swollen.

I have just had a phone call from our vets and I'm afraid its not good news. :(

Once sedated they could examine Tyson properly and what our vets have found isn't good. He is extremely thin, missing fur in many places, missing lots of teeth and those he does have are broken and worn. His swollen eye it turns out is due to a massive tumour behind the eye which is so big it is now extended down to his throat and into his mouth. It is possible the wound under the neck is self inflicted to try to release some of the pressure in his skull. Certainly this little man has been in great pain and suffering for months.

In light of the examination results we have decided to let Tyson go to Rainbow Bridge with dignity. Run free, happy and pain free Tyson. Know you were loved in these final days by many. Rest easy now boy.

Well I can report that Tyson is feeling much the same as he was Friday.

He has finally gone to the litter box and with us in the room so must have been bursting. he seems to be a little more relaxed around us which is good. His eye looks terribly swollen and we have just caught our first real glimpse of the wound on his neck. It made me tear up and Paul feel sick to look at. He must be in SO much pain. Will definitely be vets Monday it is SO deep you can just about see the ligaments in his neck. :(

I'm going to take an unadulterated plug for our vote here for Sunny Harbour to win £5000.  Voting ends tonight at midnight and we need ALL the help we can get.  Voting link below.

Lorna - we actually named the cats and we're on a boxer theme at the moment with Ali, Bruno and now Tyson! ;)

Oops Sorry! :-[
Their names conjured up a vision of her standing by watching tom cats duff each other up.

That wound looks like an abscess that's been partially healing and then bursting again, as you say, he's probably been scratching at it poor thing.
Keeping everything crossed for him

We only seem to find out the truth about how long she has been feeding them 'after' we get them in.  Really frustrating.

Lorna - we actually named the cats and we're on a boxer theme at the moment with Ali, Bruno and now Tyson! ;)

Bruno wouldn't have been strong enough to fight and it was only when her daughter in law saw Bruno that rescue's were called.   Despite the description 2 rescues wouldn't help!!!  grrr  Her own animals are grossly overweight and she leaves food out in her garden for cats all day and night and so any passing cat stops for a munch.

As for Tyson really not sure what would have caused this wound.  Its very odd shape and depth.  Certainly it could be a lot worse than the original injury as the vet reckons that its a very old wound that hasn't healed. Bearing in mind where it is its very likely that he could have been scratching at it each time it scabbed and has therefore made the original wound much much bigger.  In the photo if you look closely you can see the dead tissue around the outside of the open area.  There is no obvious signs of infection at the moment so we are hoping he will be ok from an infection perspective.

More concerning is the eye which is also causing him pain.  How she missed that is beyond me and that has been like that for months to years.  He is struggling to open it tonight but we are pleased to say that he resting a little better now and hopefully once he calms down over the weekend he will trust us a little more and let us check him properly.

I do have to say though I find it really difficult to keep tight lipped and polite at times when I just want to scream at her for not doing something sooner for both the boys.  They have both gone through hell in front of her and she just 'hasn't noticed'  :(

On the other side though if I do and we alienate her how many other cats in how many states will we not discover?!?!  We have tried to talk to her to tell her what to look for and take action sooner, so I suppose in following on from Bruno this is sooner, but jeesh!!

I was thinking the same thing.......if someone spends two years feeding a cat then in my opinion they have an assumed duty of care,  >:(
Are Tyson's injuries caused by fighting do you think? maybe if she'd intervened earlier he and Bruno could have both been neutered and released and this would never have happened - it's ironic that she has chosen 'fighting' names for them both, that speaks volumes really doesn't it?

One of our volunteers perhaps hit the nail on the head.  She feeds them and gets attached to them (though not allowing them indoors) and then its only when they get very sick and look like they will need expensive care she calls.  Just so frustrating if we had got to him sooner he wouldn't have been in pain this long

they claim they didn't but come on... if you have been feeding a cat for in excess of 2 years surely?????  if not the neck wound then definitely his eye which has been like that for years.   He may yet lose it.

New Arrival - Stray for years... need a rant!
« Reply #1 on: April 27, 2012, 16:40:57 PM »
We have just taken in a wee black cat we have decided to call Tyson.  He is in bad shape and known problems so far are his right eye is badly ulcerated, swollen and glaucoma and he has a nasty gash under her neck, which is an old wound (see pic).  He is to have the weekend to rest and if he is strong enough  he should go into the vets to be sedated and looked over properly on Monday / Tuesday.  Our vets concern at the moment though is his eye which he could lose and we all believe he is in considerable pain.

He is on metacam over the weekend and try to get him to eat to get his strength up after a REALLY stressful day for him.

this is the 2nd cat we have taken in in as many weeks from the same caller but what has really annoyed me today is that she has been feeding this stray for 2 years and never mentioned him once!!!!!  and has only just decided he had a sore looking eye and needed help.  This cat has been like this for weeks to months.   :(

The same situation happened with Bruno the last one she called us about. Waiting until Bruno was basically ready to pop his clogs and then called us.  I just don't get it why do people do this????

anyway... all we can do is give this one time to settle and hope that he will trust us in time despite his ordeal in catching him and taking him to the vet for a check up from a distance.  So far he has already given Paul 2 bad bites so will definitely need to be sedated to be checked over. that said we don't blame him for biting when you look at his neck. This wee fella must be in agony.
