My vet will allow just three months grace after the 12 months is up. After that he says we need to start with the preliminary followed two weeks later by the secondary. My friend in California gets her cats vaccinated three yearly - this is now the norm in the USA, but she also has to combine a rabies jab, so maybe it's a matter of priorities?

I had a vet that refused to give them more than 6 weeks late and said I would have to start all over again.

He said that was the manufactorers recommendation!

Michelle do you get the booster every year then or every 3 years for you cats? I'm just wondering if I asked my vet to do the boosters every three years would it be illegal for him to do that? I know that it wouldn't be acceptable for a cattery but my cats are unlikely to go to a cattery.

It just seems really crazy to put our cats through this stress and risk every year not to mention cost when they could be having it every three years. Do you have any idea if the license is likely to change here in the near future?

I stretch mine to about 15/16 months inbetween.
You could pretty much have them done when you want them I would have thought but you wouldn't be covered for catteries.

We talked to our vet about this. He agrees older cats only need boosters done every three years but because current recommendations are every year your insurance wont pay out if the cat develops any illness that could be related to not having had the vaccine yearly   >:(

It may all be connected to the boosters. Our Munchkin is always out of sorts for a while after his boosters as was our previous boy (especially when he was very old). Our Munchkin is also prone to a small lump developing on the injection site- the first time it happened I was in a right old panic that he had developed the form of cancer related to vaccinations but it proved to be just a reaction. I don't worry about it now and it generally vanishes in the course of a few weeks. I do wonder whether we overdo the booster thing but as the Munchkin does go to the local cattery occasionally I have to keep him on annual boosters.

I know this is going a bit of topic but I've just been reading online about reactions to boosters and found out that in the USA they think it's a bad idea to inject into the scruff they inject into the leg, they also only give boosters every three years. Think I'll be asking my vet about this on my next visit.

I have never given any of mine the FeLV vaccination.
USA inject into the leg as the leg is easier to remove if a cancer develops from the incision of the injection (there is a name for this type of cancer).
I also agree with 3 yearly vac's - my vet also agree's with this too but until the license is changed in the UK they have to remain yearly :(

Another point on this is that after about 10 years old they do not need a leukemia jab as they will have immunity to it.

A few years ago one of my cats had a really bad reaction to the leukemia part of the booster. I thought she was going to die for a couple of days afterward she was so ill. The vet was insistent that it was nothing to do with the jab. I know it was, she was perfectly well before going and then at deaths door within a couple of hours of getting home. I've never had the leukemia part of the booster for any of my cats since. If you search online there are lots of cats that have had bad reactions. So it might be something worth looking into or mentioning to the vet.

There's a palatable wormer on the market called Panacur. Order it on-line from VetUK or similar providers, much cheaper than asking the vet to do it for you and the powder doesn't seem to have any taste at all (I pop a sachet in a plate of tuna, and it always goes down well.)

You may need to dose him for three days, but it's easier than tabletting.

Fingers crossed this is just a slow phase for him. Did the vet offer a vitamin booster or anything like that to pick him up?

He hasn't eaten much today. I had to give him a worm tablet yesterday (doctors orders) he would only take half.

And he is a mummy's boy.

The thing is when he had his booster on the 14th of November the vet said how well he was for his age and now here we are 30 days later and he has gone down hill could it have been the booster?

What should it be?

I did read somewhere that a cats heart rate should be 120-160 beats per minute.

I am glad the vet didn't find anything really nasty   I nursed my last 2 cats until they were really old but the love they gave me in return was all the repayment I could ever want   Ofcourse we worry that is the price of love
Carry him around, give him lots of cuddles and he will pick up when the weather improves
Take care

what does the vet suggest?

Nothing really she said that if it gets worse and affects his breathing they will treat it. I think it is a case of he is getting old. So he has to take things easy and no climbing stairs. :'(

Oh dear ... sounds like Ping will have to be carried upstairs to bed now then!  ;).  Glad nothing nasty turned up in the bloods ... and fingers crossed Ping is just suffering from a bit of SAD syndrome.

I get very anxious over my two cats and take tablets to help me feel better. Since Ping has been off colour I have had to increase them. I am a very laid back extrovert with a great sense of humour  but when it comes to my cats welfare................
