He has been diagnosed with Megacolon. The vet has advised high-fibre food. Anyone else have any experience/tips? - I am picking him up tomorrow.

I spoke to Angela this morning and she said she thinks the vet is going to do an internal exam rather than open him up which is quite drastic.

I was quite surprised to hear that as they resisted opening Alice up as they thought it might be too much for her.

I am quite sure Mark the vet would not even contemplate opening up unless he thought it was worth the risk to do so and would not surprise me if he may think the blockage is due to something ingested, hence why the operation. Hope the cat pulls through ok and he is soon on the road to recovery in your care with extra TLC.

i must say Lazareth has had a bit of a hard time lately.. I suspect they have decided to do this as this is the 2nd time he has blocked up (boxing day he had to go in again).. May be the tablets, etc.. All in all abit of a unsual case....As he was given full blood profile in the vets that saw him before when he was being taken care of by the previous carer... Lazareth reported had terrible diarohea issues, but no such issues in our care... He has not been on meds for very long...In cases such as this we try and investigate all the issues as we dont really know much about how he was before. We know he is a lovely, gentle chap, and maybe a indoor foster home may give him extra encouragement to eat.. Abit of a mystery... But our main concern is to get him out of a pen and some TLC... which sometimes works wonders... Considering Lazareth escaped being PTS 3 times he is one lucky puss already.

He hasn't had the runs all the time he has been at Sharn's. His main problems atm seem to be lack of appetite and depression.

As it is, Alice & Kylie are the same. Kylie is very wary of Alice and if I am there, Kylie like to be escorted from the back door to the stairs and also the other way round. Kylie also tolerated Clapton but really had it in for Willow.

I have only ever known her to like one cat and that was when I lived in London. She used to sit on the garden path with this other cat no problem

I really don't want a repeat of the years of problems with Willow & Kylie

I never seemed to have the problem of runny stools with a cat that was being treated for Hyperthyroidism and that cat was with me for 9 months and was on Felimazole and that was changed to Neo-mercazole 5mg. At the time the cat was 18 years old and when they managed to get the HyperT under control it then started with kidney problems which is a common side effect of getting the HyperT under control.

I see from NOAH that the runs is listed as a common side effect of Vidalta but not listed for Felimazole. Sorry

I prob sound defensive but don't mean to. Just more interested than usual as Fred likely to have to begin treatment for HyperT in the foreseeable future altho trying to put off due to his kidney probs.

Hyperthyroidism itself causes a loose tum due to the overactive system and nervousness caused by the illness, so more likely than not the runs will have been a symptom of that. The runs should stop once on thyroid treatment and the thyroid gland is less active.

I will take a look at it. I have a few trick ups my sleeve from experience. Salmon and fresh roast chicken for starters

- I will mention meds & runs to Sharon & Caroline.

One way or another, I will get photos by Friday

I spoke to Sharon again tonight and she said although the vet said around 8, people that have seen him think he is older although maybe he had just had a hard life.

If vet thinks OK, would ask if OK to have an anabolic steroid jab to try and kick start his eating. Seems to have worked well with Fred tonight

I think you have given Tanya's site a wide berth in the past but would encourage you to take a peek at this section if he comes to you with an appetite problem. I'm sure it won't be anything much you don;t already know but I found it a useful summary tonight Mark.

It occurs to me that sometimes the HyperT medication can cause the runs when 1st started which may have been a problem with him? I know that happened with horrid near neighbour's poor cat

As far as semi long haired cats go.... I used to think they were a bit ... well

girl's blousey for me but then came Fred, then Noni, now Groucho

They sorta get under your skin somehow

I'm thinking of starting a petition to restrict posts on a thread that is absent of pics .........

Caroline wants to take him to the vet on Friday for his 2nd vacs and a once-over before we take him. She is concerned about his eating and they want to make sure it isn't the meds - maybe he needs a reduction or change.

Lazarus has been saved twice from PTS, the last time was just before xmas when he was due to be PTS in 1/2 hour's time

- he has been staying at a cattery but is very depressed and not eating properly. He is hyper-t but takes his meds OK. Sharn says he probably needs more time than she is able to give him and the depression may be causing him not to eat properly. He had bloods done in November and nothing showing up.

Sharon did tell me the story but not sure if I have it straight. I believe he was going to be PTS but was adopted. The woman said that he has constant diarrhea and she can't cope with him/it any more so took him for PTS. Since he has been with Sharn, she said he hasn't had it at all.

Not sure how old he is. I think Sharon may have said 8 but an elderly 8.

He is semi long haired

- I'm not a fan of long haired cats as a rule but a sucker for a hard luck story

Anyway, watch this space....

Lazarus will be taking the attic suite vacated by Alice 3 years ago

She said living in servants quarters was good enough for her so it will be good enough for another cat
