On this I would get Veterinary advice as if the vet does not condone it or heard of it being given as a supplement to cats then it is best to steer clear of it.

If your animal is healthy then I am puzzled to why you would be adding items such as coconut oil, fish oils yes can understand due to the omega which supports healthy joints.

Not getting into arguments over a disagreement but according to ASPCA, it isn't poisonous but can cause stomach upsets so only a tiny amount allowed. I don't know for sure but I would say plant-based anything isn't the right thing for cats. This is the ASPCA take on it http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/ask-the-expert/ask-the-expert-poison-control/coconut-products.aspx

I just think that given the way cats are designed, animal-based things have to be the way to go. I know some manufacturers add rosemary oil to food but I wouldn't feed it to my cats.

ETA - after reading this, maybe I should consider it http://www.ardengrange.com/rosemary.asp

Not that mine will touch AG food.

I can change that then as I shall no longer be posting on Purrs anymore.

I hope you will read this Den as I feel awful that I have upset or offended you.   :( Please don't stop posting on Purrs, if you think I am being rude or overbearing or you don't agree for whatever reason, please let's have a discussion.

There are only two scientific references in the first article (both relating to humans?) and none at all in the other two. A first year undergraduate would receive an outright fail for that level of research! Please understand anyone can publish anything on the internet, some will tell you the earth is flat and that our leading politicians are shapeshifting aliens.

My understanding is that obligate carnivores cannot digest most plant oils; Mark may be better placed to comment on whether that is a universal truth. Certainly there is scientific evidence that humans - omnivores - can covert just 10% of plant omega-3 to the usable form - basically we need the fish variant as that is what we evolved to metabolise.

I will admit I am far from convinced of the health benefits of coconut oil in humans, there are no meta-analyses that I am aware of and I would never advocate it to my clients. I don't agree with Den that it is not harmful, getting the balance of fats in the diet wrong can be harmful to any animal - an example which springs to mind relating to cats is an excess of tuna causing steatitis which is painful and can be fatal.

Good luck getting them to take it! I would just go for fish oils, far easier and a more logical, natural supplement for cats :shy:

Yes normally because it's 'fish' but coconut oil also has benefits, there's some trustworthy sources over the net.  Just want to know would there be anything harmful in coconut oil.  I use it as a sport supplement and on the ends of my hair as well.

I would expect salmon oil to be more suitable for cats.

Seems a little specialised, why are you giving you cat coconut oil?
