Try shredded news paper and some of the one he has already used , so the tray will have his scent.

Hi All,

Latest pics of Truman. (He doesn't always get fed on the bed but I do spoil him sometimes)

Milly's Mum: Good idea re: paper on tray, I will try that tonight.

Not much news to report, but sometimes no news is good news. He continues to eat and drink well and is getting his medication in cubes of chicken which he loves. I am continuing to bathe his ulcerated cyst with the Hebiscrub and it is drying up a bit - I guess it will just take time. I gave him a going over with brush and flee comb the other day as he was a bit manky when I got him. He was given Stronghold by RSPCA so there were no living fleas on him that I could see but there was a lot of flee dirt (yuch). I've let the other cats in the room while I have been there but they are just ignoring him now. I guess the novelty has worn off. Truman, I think, is aware of them but doesn't seem bothered. The ginger one, MacGreggor, and the black one, Jeffrey are quite happy to lie at the foot of the bed or beside me with Truman in his favourite place. Sammy doesn't usually lie on my bed but did come into the room this morning and snaffled some of Truman's renal biscuits before heading off downstairs again.

Wonderful news! Hope he does well on the Fortekor - it's a really positive sign that he's enjoying his food.

Maybe he's never had a litter tray? Years ago my friend's Mum used newspaper for her cats until someone finally bought them a tray!

He is still affectionate but is much more relaxed, possibly due to the help of the Feliway but also, I hope, because he knows he is safe and comfortable. He has now taken to lying on my fleecy dressing gown which I left one morning on my bed , is nothing sacred?

Hi All

Truman continues to do very well.

Have given up with the litter tray and just put newspaper down in all 4 corners of my bedroom. Luckily he does stick to this so it isn't really a problem.

Yes, it is Fortekor he is on. Wouldn't take in crunched up in his wet food but the vet said he could have a little treat of chicken breast so he is getting a little cut into cubes each night with tablet hidden inside. He is VERY passionate about chicken and would, I am sure, have eaten the whole bird if he had been offered it

I took some great photos with my new mobile phone which I was going to post but can't get it onto my USB stick. Will borrow my son's camera again this evening and post some photos tomorrow.

i wish it was years for truman abd sometimes they surprise vets. he will have a great home for the rest of his life and so much better than what he had.

Hi All

Apologies for the curtness of this report - absolutely manic at work today.

Took Truman to the vet yesterday and it went well.
His heart is fine. Only has teeth on one side but they are clean.
She confirmed he is in early/mid stages of renal failure so must stay on renal food only. I have put him on Royal Canine renal food and he seems to like it.
His absess on his neck is benign but ulcerated so I have to bath it twice a day with Herbiscore (I think that's right) a strong antiseptic which will dry it out. Not currently infected but if becomes so will treat with course of antibiotics. She confirmed that is inoperable as the anasthetic would damage his kidneys more. He is very good at getting it bathed and seems to like it.
He has been prescribed something beginning with F (sorry forgot to write it down) which will help his kidneys and also reduces blood pressure.
She said he does have retinal haemoraging, probably due high blood pressure due to his kidney failure but says it wont be causing him any pain.

The good thing is that she seemed to think he had a good few months left in him (sadly not years, but better than days) and has asked me to bring him back in 3 months time.

He is still eating and drinking well and is enjoying lying on my bed which catches the sun in the afternoon.

He is such a sweetie, I am so glad we managed to get him.

Had RSPCA home checker round today and she was very nice.

they always surprise you just what they can do,my old Eddie (17+) altho suffering with arthritis in his back legs can still cla,mber over my 5' fence to go for a wander on the front,now i leave the cat flap open in the fence and he totters through for 10mns then comes back for a cat nap :evillaugh:Im betting you felt a little bit emotional when he came and climbed up besides you for a cuddle

So excited just had to post first thing

When I got home from work yesterday I went straight upstairs to see how he was doing. Looked in the make shift pen - no Truman! Panic, Panic. Then I looked up, the cheeky monkey had managed to climb over the boxes and then onto the bed and was curled up fast asleep on my pillow. I was so pleased because I really didn't think he was physically capable of getting up onto my bed unassisted. Blind or not, he obviously has a homing instinct for the softest, most comfortable place in the room

I did observe him getting off the bed later and he was a bit wobbly on his back legs but managed it. He has also figured out where his food and water is and is eating and drinking normally.

Unfortunately, my brilliant plan with the litter tray didn't work. There were two puddles on the vinyl which I found when I stepped in them in my stocking feet

Back to the drawing board. I will e-mail Nikki and ask what type of litter they were using, it may be that he just doesn't like the wood pellets, some cats are fussy that way.

So, Truman (aka Houdini) is doing very well. He climbed on my bed and cuddled up next to me at bedtime and slept there fine all night. Poor old Stinky went off in a huff and slept in the cupboard (where she sleeps on an old duvet during the day to get peace and quiet from the others). As the corral idea didn't work I have taken it down and blocked off access to under the bed as he pooed there on the first night and it was difficult to clear up.

Will post again on Friday after the vets

It is so nice to hear Truman is home with you Moira and lovely to see pics - been following this thread in the background and you're all brill

I have a huge soft spot for the old and manky ones, expecially the gingers

When Manky old Biscuit landed here,he did a LOT of sleeping for a good few weeks, guess when they've lived rough and been through a lot they just have a lot of catching up to do.

Give him big cuddles from us, will keep wtching his progress

It would be lovely if someone came on and said they were willing to give Heidi a home but as WW said most of us have a household of cats but one should never give up hope cos often we have unexpected surprises.

Hi all again, it has been manic at work today with me being off Friday and my colleague being off today. I did want to mention earlier a bit about Heidi and Brent Knoll RSPCA. Heidi is a lovely cat, very friendly and energetic. she was out of her pen when I was there running up and down the corridor chasing a ball. You can see her picture and story on

What a wonderful tribute to Truman if in rehoming him we were also able to help rehome another hard to home cat. Please put out the word about Heidi.

Brent Knoll is a very small branch. At present they only have a cattery and runs for rabbits and small animals. A number of their animals are therefore fostered. They are raising money now to build a kennels and another cattery. I think this is the problem with the RSPCA that people don't often realise that although the RSPCA big organisation has a lot of money, the branches are self funding. I agree it is a pity more of the funds aren't directed towards the small branches.

I am so glad that all of us, including Brent Knoll, working together were able to help Truman and I hope that in future RSPCA branches will feel they can approach us here for at least some of their hard to home animals.

Justine: I dont think Stinky (11 year old grey/white girl) is convinced that Truman is a cat. She eyed him intently from across the room then tiptoed passed him - pausing briefly mid step to look at him, and, not getting a response, continued on having figured that he is not a threat. She sleeps on my bed and doesn't seem perturbed that he is on the floor beside it. MacGreggor just sniffed at Truman and went to the foot of the bed and lay there. The other cats I have only let in one at a time to judge their reaction. Again, lots of sniffing and backing off. Stinky is the only one that gets to sleep in my room, the guys, including MacGregor, stay downstairs at night. I will not be letting them in the bedroom again for a while and wont, at any time, leave Truman alone with them - no matter how laid back they are, he might wander into them and give them (and himself) a fright.

How are the other cats reacting to him? I can see stinky in the pictures but know she will do her own thing regardless of him, but the other cat lying quite close to truman on the bed, thats quite interesting! I know we have spoken about them not understanding his blindness, however i'm not so sure, after all they are very intelligent,

would love to know more about thier reactions!
