I'm putting this picture on again because I can't get the image of such a huge cat reduced to staggering around out of my head. OH was devastated too, I think he'd commited himself to helping these to to mend. I can't help feeling selfish for not taking them home and nursing them myself but what if one of mine caught it?

It raises a huge dilemma in my mind about working in rescue. I'm not going to stop but if one of mine got this sick I don't think I could forgive myself.  :'(

Sad news everyone, we lost Alfie last night. He was so brave but he had fluid on his lungs and couldn't fight it anymore.

Play hard on the bridge gorgeous boy, say "hi" to little Hope for me and I promise to do all I can to make Meggie well again.

Miss you even though I only knew you for a short time

well oscar and his brother both had chest infections and the stiff leg thing I really thought I was going to lose them and I'd only had them 3 days I didn't put them anywhere warm I just let them go where they wanted and both of them settled under the table in the dining room I think they do get a higher temp so he might be a bit warm

Well they did keenly sniff their chicken Sheba that I left out and hopefully will have had some once they were left alone. I'm going to visit them later and take another oil-filled radiator down for them.

You don't think it could be that Alfie's feeling too hot and stuffy and that's why he wants to lie in the cold do you? We've been trying to keep them as warm and cosy as possible but any tips are always gratefully received.

This is the worst instance of cat-flu I've seen, although I've been fortunate and not seen it too much.

They have a sudafed plug-in with them and loads of water, sheba/gourmet/exigent food for choice. This is on top of the syringed food.

poor babies I hope they can fight back, do you know what virus it is?

It's the dreaded cat-flu. Normally they would be eating by now but the vet's not sure why they aren't. I think it's combined with being chucked back into rescue that's done it.

Well, we went to the vet's last night after the CP meeting to take them home. They have been on a drip since Saturday and are now rehydrated. Sadly that's about the only good news.

They are still not eating and are on convalescence food, syringe-fed every three hours. We made them beds and put them in the warm but Alfie kept crawling out of the catflap and lying on the wet, cold floor outside. He can barely walk, he's staggering around all over the place. He's lost so much weight.

I can't foster them as they still pose quite a threat to my cats so they are in isolation now. We sealed off the catflap and made them as comfortable as possible.

I got in very late last night and I am exhausted. If two cats can do this to me, just a volunteer who cleans and feeds once a week, it only adds to the respect I have for those of you who go it alone and have this sort of thing to deal with regularly.

I'll update you when I know more

I'll find out how they are tonight at the CP meeting and if they're non-contagious, I think I'm going to see if I can foster them. At least then they'll have a warm quiet bedroom with two slaves catering for them.

I'll let you all know tomorrow how they are.

Thanks again for your kind messages

what terrible news CS.....   got all our fingers, toes and paws crossed here for the wee ones.

I know what its like to have them crash so quickly and really hope that they keep the fighting spirit to get through it... which can be hard with older kitties that have been in the shelter environment.

Sending lots of healing vibes and prayers for them both and hope they start to take a turn for the good very soon.

Hugs n Purrs

It's not totally out of the blue, they've had this bug for a few days and been on meds/eating a/d but once they've been to the vet and got their meds you expect them to get better quite quickly not deteriorate in such an awful way.

My heart strings have been pulled all over the place today. I'm so thrilled about Sundae but feel guilty about letting him go (weird I know) and I'm so worried about these two!

Thanks for your kind words though bc, it means a lot

Bad news everyone, Alfie and Meggie are in hospital. They have a virus. They are on drips at the moment and struggling to breathe. The vet said he's given them all the meds he can for no and they have to fight it off themselves. He's not worried about Alfie because he's such a big cuddle-bear but there's just skin and bone left on Meggie. He thinks she may have something nasty underlying and has tested for liver/kidney failure.

They have been on antibiotics and I think anti-inflammatories too and syringe-fed a/d.

This is so heartbreaking as I think it's been brought on by the stress of their lack of home. It also upsets me because she looks like my bridge kitty Hope and now she looks like Hope did when she crashed. Please send them some good furry headbutt vibes  :'(

I went to see Meggie and the others on Christmas morning to bring them prezzies from Santa Paws. She is a little better than she was but still needs to get out of there. Alfie was asleep, no surprise there!

Let's see what the new year brings for these two...  ;)

I would see about getting them in a foster home in the New Year purely to help Meggie out - I have fostered cats that have been in our rescue a while, and then rehomed them from here, and it doesn't seem to bother them, so i wouldnt feel under pressure to adopt them, instead I would try and push rehoming in the New Year.

fostering is a good idea, Misty calmed right down after a few days of peace and quiet in the spare room. It will make them easier to place if they are calm and friendly purr-pusses than if they are grumpy snarl-pusses. BSHs can be pretty scary when they decide to put you in your place  :scared:

TBH, we haven't tried too much this side of Christmas, desireable breed and all. I'm wondering whether I should foster them in the new year and take it from there. At least that way they'll be in a warm quiet bedroom. I could introduce them to my two and see if it works out. Only thing is, what if it doesn't? I don't want any more movement for these babes than what they've already been through.

Gill is four a good number? I reckon I'm convinceable but I think four is too many in a two (double) bedroom townhouse. They would be indoors, only because my existing ones are and it'd confuse me otherwise plus it doesn't seem fair to have some in some out.

I am planning on getting a conservatory though...

that is ridiculous that they are not yet placed. How could anyone resist them? Mind a BSH who is not in the mood can be a bit disconcerting ... :-:

Have they contacted the breed society to see if they can be listed with them?

Just bumping this up. I can't believe these two are still in. Meggie (the bluecream girl) is so frightened.

She is losing weight and is becoming growly (until you stroke her and then she's an absolute purr-box).

Alfie is just a big, cuddly bear and is taking it well. He's so much like Josh it breaks my heart. And worse still, Meggie is just like my bridge kitty Hope (same colour nd personality).

I really want to take these two in myself but I don't think I have the room. I keep justifying it to myself but then I think day to day it's no problem but what about insurance? What if just one cat gets ill (heaven fobid)? I'm not sure I can afford it.

Or can I  :evillaugh: ? I just adore these two so much!
