Am glad to hear she is doing well Elaine, but have to say that if she has lost that on normal food and exercise, I wouldnt bother with the obesity diet, it doesn't sound like she needs it.

even that is not a reliable guide. Bob's ribs and his spine could be felt loud and clear. He felt as if he was starving. Then he would roll over and you would realise that the reason for this was that the weight of his belly was dragging everything downwards so the skin over his spine was stretched thin. That, and the normal muscle-wasting associated with aging, can actually be quite misleading ...

Ribsssssssssssssssssssss, what are those

I think if you can feel the ribs they are thin, I dont wanna feel any ribs  :evillaugh: :evillaugh:

I am pleased she has lost weight and to my surprise so had Misa and I did try and reduce the amount of dry food down but now we are back to winter and 6 dinners Misa  and smell food at a 1000metres Sasa seem to know the minute any new food is down!

I don't know of weight guides for cats (althuogh there are average weights for specific breeds) but I just go by the 'feel the ribs but not see them' rule.  I'm always touching my boys to see how much fat they have around their middles.  I think they see me as a right old pervert  ;D

The Diva joined kitty weight watchers this afternoon, she did curse alot I dont know where she has learnt such foul language. It certainly wasnt from me
Anyway she has lost a little more than I had thought. She weighed in at 6.54 kilos, must have been the furminator this morning
They gave me the choice of two diet foods. Hills, which I am not very keen on any way but the nurse said it was full of fibre and would make her poop more , I thought about it for a short time and said no to that one coz as you know, Eva likes to poop on the floor so we have gone with the Walthams obesety diet for now and she will be weighed again in two weeks.
The nurse said her ideal weight should be between 4 and 5 kilos Thats lighter than the vet said oringinally. They laughed at me when i said she was a very big boned girl. Will take it gradually and see how she goes. Is there some sort of weight guide for cats and specific breeds of cat as there is for dogs? How do they work out what the ideal weight is? I mean we all know that as humans, I may be the same height but my build would determine that I may be heavier/lighter than you. Get me?

Crikey Elaine what's your secret!

Well done. I think this is fab news for Diva! :congrats:

I am struggling to get Lexy to lose just 700g. That's all. Just 700. She's 4.73kg and I need her to lose that 700 so she's nearer 4kg.

This week she is going on the RC Obesity diet.  :tired:

Thanx for the support.  Lynn she last weighed in at 7.6 kilos .  I am pleased that she is losing weight, we changed her food to light food and are making sure she plays more.  She's getting there but we have a long way to go yet. ;)

Just a wee update, havent had her back to the vets as yet to be weighed again but will do in the next few weeks.
Since reducing her food though, her personality has changed a fair bit.  She is much more affectionate and is becoming quite the lap cat.  She is also much more energetic and playful which is good to see although she is bullying Bernie a little more than usual.  As always though Bernie is that bit more faster and more agile than she is. :evillaugh:
We weighed her ourselves last week and she hadnt lost anything which is why I am really concentrating on getting her playing etc before i take her back to see the vet.  The good news is though that she hadnt gained anything either.

Eva has had the runs today :(  Other than that she seems ok in herself.  Normally if she is ill or stressed she is quite clingy and just wants to be with her mum but she has been running around and complaining so am not worried as yet.

Yes some one called then because a 6 foot skinhead(bald man) was jumping over the walls into gardens.  They thought he was up to no good.  Fortunately when they arrived Graham was ontop of the boundary wall with Bernie in his arms.  They asked what he was upto and he said he was just retreiving his cat.  They also heard me calling for him and I verified the story By shouting over the walss a few gardens down
Bernie is a bit p'd off at not getting out into the garden this evening.  Graham is going to try and sort something out tomorrow.  Eva managed a good 15 minute play this evening with laser pen and wiggly wagler.  Now she just wants cuddles.

I tell you folks, I am gonna sleep well tonight.  Bernie managed to go awol out of the back garden over an 18 foot wall :'(Some one has nicely piled loads of tyers and houshold objects against it   We have had the bloody police round because Graham and I were climbing walls into all the gardens in the street.  Eventually found Bernie running up and down along the wall being quite vocal at our calls.  Graham managed to get ontop of the wall and chase him back up to our garden.  I had to run up the street, into our garden again armed with a ladder and a chair trying to get him down :-:  Eventually he managed to get down the way he got up.  The worry now though is now he has sused a way out, he may well go off again.  Time to get some sort of fence up ontop of that wall me thinks. :tired:
Eva just sat outside on her lazy fat ass watching it all :-:

i'm genuinly in shock, if you saw him in the flesh (and hair obviously  :evillaugh:) you'd never put that as a guess on his weight.  I can only assume his weight is deceptive due to him being such a long cat.  His fathers name is actually "big" because for laperms they are of larger stock but still i'd have said no more than 4.5kg tops and i'm a reasonably good guesser normally having had to weight and chart weight of hundreds..prob thousands of cats.

Susanne that suprised me re mosi's weight.  I know like lp's the somalis can take a few years to mature but i would have expected him to be bigger than that since his build in general very similar to codsters who is around 4+ kgs

Somalis do have a slender build.  His fur makes him look bigger than he is!  When he stands in the window you can see through his fur that he has a slender body.  He's tall but when I stroke him around the front end in particular he is very delicate under the fluff.

edited to add - Cody is probably like Jaffa who looks like he should weigh less than he does.  He's very solid and muscular, despite having quite a small build.  He always weighed a bit more than Magpie who looked much bigger as he had a bigger build and long fur (although when Jaffa jumps down from something he does sound like a herd of elephants!)

Go to youtube and search for burmese cats on treadmill - hilarious. Bit drastic for weight loss though I grant you! Btw how overweight is the vet?! :-)

I found the Hills Indoor Cat and Royal Canin Light foods were good when I needed to get Bilbo to lose a little bit at the end of last summer. The Hills R/D is supposed to be good for weight loss but I've never tried it myself.

If I can get her down to just under 6kg, obviously not in the next few weeks but over a period of time, then I think I would be happier with that.  But we'll see how it goes.

I think that's the best way to go about things and then see how she is.  I think also, vets don't actually take into account bone structure and the right weight for one cat, isn't necessarily right for another one.    I am in the same dilemma over Kara, on a dog chart, she should be 35kgs but for her body size, this is absolutely ridiculous  :censored:  I am going for the 50kg mark and will probably stop at that.  I'm glad Bernie has been doing his exercises on the quiet  ;)

Eva doesn't look too bad to me - although long hair can disguise a multitude of sins!  As both of my cats are skinny build the average cat looks overweight to me!  6kg sounds enormous! Jaffa weighs just under 5kg and he's a big boy (tall and long) but he has a slender build and is carrying no excess weight at all - very lean!  Mosi is a foreign style breed and has a small build but he's tall - he weighs 3.4 kg at the moment.  Just take it step by step.  Get her to 6kg then see if you think she needs to be lighter and set a new goal.

I love Eva the Diva, she is a Misa sorta cat...................you will see his pics in the cat show and makes Eva look small lol. However it is hard to tell the size in pictures.

I would say to bring her down to under 5kgs is far to much and agree with Des and Lynn.

To give you an indication of Misas size for around 6.5 kg cat, he can put his paws to the top of the working top when standing on back legs, hes about the same as a 2yr old Maine Coon. He did have a bigger jelly belly than now so think he ate too much when it was cold and then stopped.

Mine all eat together on a nosh when you want basis and I notice that Misa is a 2 dinner man

sounds sensible..how old is she now, in frasers case i know he'll never ever be the same lean weight that he was when he was younger, yes he looked better i'll not deny but at around 14 it just aint gonna happen in this life time.
