I went again to RSPCA centre again at the weekend, I spoke to a lady there & explained the situation & she said she didnt think I should get another right away ? & that I should wait a few months for Leo to settle ?

All this different advice from Breeders, RSPCA & other people I speak to is so confusing !  (I am indecisive at the best of times !!!)

There arnt any kittens availible as yet anyway as they are only new borns there. I was ready to go & choose one there & then yesterday but firstly none were avalible & secondly the lady advised against it !

oo decisions decisions !

I agree with the others -
Get another kitten asap

honestly they really do do better in pairs.

Imagine how you would feel taken away from your Mummy and Siblings to a strange house all on your own  :'(
At least if you have another kitten they can cuddle up to each other for company

get anouther kitten while he is still little
i only got 1 moomin  , i am in all day and at 5 month i felt guilty she didnt have a kitten friend , then i got mango when moomin was 6 month but they missed out on the fun and although they put up with each other moomin would rather go out
i now have luna so i have 2 yrs 15 month and 5 month luckily mango and luna play and cuddle up and its lovely to see then lick each other and snuggle
looking back i should have got 2 togeather - get him a little friend - youll have to do intros and it might take a wk or so ,
get some felliway and follow whizzes instructions and then while your at work youll rest asure they are happy and hey thats anouther kitty out of rescue

She's a registered breeder with FIFe and is a member of several cat clubs so I wouldn't panic too much. Her prefix rings a bell so I am wondering if I have seen any cats that she's bred at shows. Her cats look gorgeous especially the girl she's got from Kassaro (Kassaro breed fabulous Maine Coons) :Luv:

Maine Coons are fairly popular so I wouldn't expect someone involved in rescue, even maine coon rescue, to know every breeder.  That doesn't mean the breeder isn't a good breeder so don't let that put you off.

Looks like they are FIFE registered.

& that she didn't recognise the breeder I have bought from

Is the breeder registered with FIFe, GCCF or TICA? If you are really worried you could always email or phone the registering body the breeder registers her kittens with.

How does this woman know what the kitten will be like? Seems like she is trying to get more money out of you. You did say she was a breeder didnt you?

Breeders know their breed very well and know the personality traits of the breed. Reputable breeders aren't out to "get more money out of you". As far as I am aware Maine Coons are like NFCs in that they adore company and no matter how hard we try humans can't provide company for cats in quite the same way that another cat can especially as they have so much energy.

The majority of breeders will advise you to have 2 kittens together and most will point you in the direction of local rescues for the second one or if you decide to have two from them they will usually give a discount (exact amount of discount varies from breeder to breeder and also on what their pet price is in the first place).

CC, it was the lady from the Rescue Centre that said they are better in pairs not the breeder.

Just called my local RSPCA centre. They said they have only just recently changed & now rehome kittens (not any older) as indoor pets. This is great to know as its local, The process takes up to 2 weeks, you get a voucher for neutering & it has its vaccinations !

so if the worse comes to the worse - I kniw that there is somewhere local where i could get an additional kitten from !

Phew

I don't rehome kittens on their own and not usually when someone is out all day working.  I think if you could manage it, it would be better trying to get another one and introduce at the same time, they are so much happier in pairs and it's easier than introducing at a later date.  I wouldn't go for a very young kitten either especially with you working, kittens go downhill very quickly if something is wrong.

I do think kittens do best when they've got a playmate, and most indoor cats do well with a companion for when their human slave isn't at home.  If they don't go outside they don't get any other opportunity to interact with another cat and groom each other etc.  But some people do have just one cat and the cat is just fine so I wouldn't stress about it too much.  I'd go ahead and get your kitten, but I'd seriously consider getting another kitten to keep him company as soon as possible.  Getting them at the same time or close together would probably make introductions easier.  It's also lots of fun having 2 kittens around and watching them play and grow up together ;D  2 males will be fine together.  I've always had male cats and think males are, generally, more accepting of a new addition than females.

So I suppose the question is, are you willing and can you afford to get 2 kittens?  Either 2 maine coons or a rescue kitten to go with the maine coon you have booked?  It isn't always easy getting rescues to rehome healthy kittens to indoor homes but some do.  I'm sure rescue peeps on here will be able to help out in advising where would be a good place to contact.

The way I think of it is what is a little one going to do all day to occupy himself because they do get lonely and bored  and if you are going to go for 2 it might be best to introduce them at the same time - a lot of breeders will give a discount if you get 2 kittens.  The breeder where we got the Benglies does not like to let a kitten go on its own

Thanks everyone (again!!)

All I have done in the past few months is research on Maine Coons.. sometimes untill 2am !!!

There have been a handful of people who's opinions were this wasnt a good Idea, but I went with the majority who said it would be fine.

I guess I just have to get him home & settled & Monitor him, as I say I am off the 1st week of having him while he settles in.

Im a born worrier & I thank you all again for putting up with all my concerns !

Yep you can get indoor rescue kittens and unfortunately theres many breed specific rescues too who look for indoor homes.

Thanks everyone. if I had another cat I would go to RSPCA centre BUT I dont think they rehome kittens as indoor cats infact im sure of it ?

Some rescues will rehome to indoor only and RSPCA does as my coworker always adopts his cats from there (the York one, his latest two he got last winter) and they are all indoor.

I can understand you worrying because we were the same when we got out Bengal babies - we initially reserved just one but after thinkking about it we ended up with 2 and I am so glad that we did because they are so active that my other 4 would never have coped with them and it is lovely watching them growing up together.

Im sure that whatever you decide your little one will have a lovely life

I would definitely consider getting a second kitten if I were you...  I love my boys to bits and spend a lot of time with them but I honestly don't think that I could devote the amount of time that I see them playing together to one cat if it were on it's own.  So for me having two kittens is far less work than one!  I work full time aswell so they have lots of toys and a super duper tall scratching/climbing tree.  Also there is nothing more fun that watching two kittens romping about together, or cuddled up at bedtime  :)

I have to agree that kittens seem to be happier in pairs, I dont think that I personally would be happy to leave 1 kitten on its own all day while I was at work, as MM has said maybe you could get a moggy to keep him company.

If you are worried about the breeder, find out who she is registered with and make some enquiries.

Get your new kitten settled in and see how your kitten is. If the kitten has lots of energy and you're worried that you aren't around enough then look at the possibility of getting another kitten to go with.

Our Burmese Lirael was on her own for 2 years, and I regret not getting her a friend earlier as I've never been able to keep up with her energy levels. Course, neither can the two foster kittens I've got.

It did take months for her and Smoke to get along and then Penguin was introduced as well.

I think its nice for kittens to go in pairs especially if they are going to a full time worker. Your red boy isnt going to go bad on his own but may be a bit lonely at first.
Maybe you could get a moggy kitten as a companion?

Help im so worried :(
« Reply #1 on: August 30, 2007, 09:01:54 AM »
I am a bit confused guys & need some reassurance.

I spoke to a lady from a rescue centre last night. She said she never sells or rehomes kittens alone & that they always go as pairs as Maine Coons thrive on companionship & need company & that she didn't recognise the breeder I have bought from, basically everything I was worried about, she highlighted !

Now, before deciding to get my kitten I spoke to people for months asking questions, finding out the good & the bad. Explained that I work during the day but the kitty will have plenty to keep him occupied as I intend to buy lots of fun toys, a HUGE cat tree & everything he would need. Also he will have 100% of my attention when im home from 5pm. The reason I have been asking so many people including Breeders & various forums is to be sure this little boy will be ok during the day. & 90% of people said there would be no problem & that they thought he would be fine as many of them do the same & they are perfectly happy.

The breeder I spoke to last night has made me feel bad for getting him. She said he won't do well at all & now im so worried & feel bad before ive even picked him up :(

If it turned out that he was starting to pooh everywhere & being destructive then obviously a 2nd kitten is defo an option.

Some reassurance please guys - I don't want him to be unhappy  :-[
