He's adorable. I see this lot have already instilled the importance of neutering.

Can only reiterate that it's a much less complicated op than a spay, and I think both ops are the most done procedure at a vets, I was told by a VN.

Thank you for all your replies! Learnt alot after using this forum for 2 days!

I just want the best for him. I sound so sad but I've Ralphy since Saturday and already he has made my house a home. I have done an online shop tonight so I don't have to leave him!

I will enquire on Friday when I take him for his vaccinations about getting him neutered when he is a bit older.

Awww no he won't have to stay in overnight

Most boys are done at around 5/6months.
You would take him in about 8am and then collect him in the afternoon. Its a really quick Op....less then 10mins and he will be back to his usual self in a few hours.

You can help help with the cost through Cats Protection if you need to

I had mine done at 5 months too although they can be done younger. Some old school vets insist on 6 months or thereabouts but as long as everything's where it should be and they weigh enough, it can be done much younger. It's a very quick op - the actual op only takes minutes - and they are back home and bouncing around as though nothing had happened the same day. Maybe a bit whooziness if the op was done later in the day but mine have always come home full of energy and acting like nothing had happened.

Most vets will neuter males from around 5 months, a very few will do it sooner and a few may only do it from 6 months. I had both mine done at 5 months and they were plenty big enough. It's a very quick and simple op so he defo won't have to stay overnight

Do you have any particular reasons for not wanting to neuter him? Only that it's much kinder/safer to get him neutered and it's a really simple, quick operation. If he's left un-neutered he's much more likely to spray (urine) in the house to mark his territory, he'll also be inclined to wander in search of the ladies and get into more fights. Fighting with other cats menas that he's more likely to pick up all sorts of diseases incluing the feline version of HIV which is sadly prevalent in un-neutered toms. Not to mention the fact that there are sooooo many unwanted cats and kittens who can't find homes as it is so if your boy is left un-neutered he'd only be adding to this problem.

I don't know your circumstances but if finances are an issue you can often get help towards teh cost of neutering from Cats Protection or the RSPCA. I hope the above hasn't come across as preachy as it certainly wasn't intended that way, there's just so many good reasons to get cats neutered

You must get him neutered.

An un-neutered male cat will roam for miles looking for female cats...
Because of this most are killed on the roads!

The one's that aren't killed very often end up getting FIV (feline aids). This is because it is past while fighting with other un-neutered male cats.

Why wouldnt you have him neutered?

If he isnt neutered he is at risk of all sorts of horrible diseases including feline aids, he will wander in search of females and fight with other male cats causing injuries and large vet bills and he is very likely to spray all reound your house. There are so many cats and kittens that are homeless because people dont spay and neuter their cats, so many healthy cats and kittens are having to be PTS - please have your little one neutered so that he can have a long and healthy life with you

Thank you for all your replies!

I have booked him in to the vets for Friday ( he is 9 weeks on Thursday) I have booked in for all vaccinations - including the one for outdoor cats, I think I will let him out if he wants to so would rather him be safe!

The vet has also said they can worm him as I am unsure if the lady I got him from has ( she said she wasn't sure so I think that means no!)

Yup - vaccs are usually at 9 and 12 weeks so your little lad was a bit young when you got him. The vet will tell you what you need the feline leukaemia one is the one that you might not need. Your vet may just give him the lot so make a point of asking about that one. If your kitten isn't going to go out or will only be going out into your garden, he probably doesn't need that one. If he's going to have free outdoor access then you may want to have it. It is the part of the vaccination that cats are most likely to develop a reaction to and some people think it's a bit much for a small kitten to have them all at one time. But then others have them all and have no problems at all and feline leukaemia is not something you want your cat to get. So best to discuss it with your fet.

Is he going to be an indoor or indoor/outdoor cat? Indoor cats still need vaccinations but there's one element of the vaccine they may not need as it is only contractable if they come into direct contact with other cats. If you let your vet know your intended lifestyle for him they wil lbe able to advise what's best

I think 1st vacs are usually about 9 weeks of age with a follow up a few weeks later. Vet can discuss with you what vacs are appropriate.....

Has he been treated for fleas and worms?

Hello!

I have recently got a kitten (8 weeks old)

The lady that I got him from did not tell me until yesterday that he has had no vaccinations!

Just wondering what he needs? Will the vet be able to tell me when I call? Just a bit worried that he hasn't had any sooner
