Just read on CC that PAH have discontinued the Purely 70% meat food, which coincides with repackaging the 40% meat content food.

We feed 14 varieties of RC along with Hills, JWB, Purina and even Whiskas and Go Cat and seveal own brands and find that on the whole things are fine we feed 10 tins of wet food along with 3.5kgs of biscuits a day

Have to say the Clan love RC and get upset if its not at least 5 meals a week!

I have just ordered another bag of Arden Grange cereal-free sensitive food for Alice to try. There are 3 types Chicken & Rice (ethically sourced - no battery-farmed), Salmon & potato & White fish & rice (or maybe potato  :shify: ), they are actually cheaper than things like Hills - a 2.5kg bag of the chicken & rice one was £9.69 - probably quite goof for poorly tummies as well. The fishy ones are a bit more expensive.

:( I didn't realise RC wasn't a popular choice.  I find it's the best for Zephyr as the Siamese variety has big kibbles and as he is missing his bottom front teeth he tends to just spit little kibbles all over the floor.  Also the bigger kibbles ensures my two other hoovers (Foxy and Rossi) have to acyally chew them and not just inhale like they do with small ones ... and then sick up totally whole bits

 I am just the suspicious type, with a cat that will inhale eat virtually anything animal-related! One of the reasons I am very anti-cereals is Noah's poop is frequent and 'fragrant' on most dry foods. Health is absolutely my prime concern and no doubt yours too, but no cat is going to be healthy if he refuses to eat/ can't hold a food down/ poops it right out again/ has a stressed slave cleaning up endless vomit or stinky litter boxes!

Thanks FF, Maizie is an adult cat now, about 18 months she just prefers the size of kitten kibble! She only gets adult varieties though!

I think I'll keep both in stock here, if they offer a similar nutritional value!! No doubt as soon as I decide on one variety she'll take violently against it!!

We have the Purely wet food to, although hi life is most popular at the moment!!

Thanks again everyone for your help.  ;D

In store today I could only find the Purely 40% meat whereas the silver packs declare around 25% meat, tho to be fair there is also additional meat meal which is still animal protein. Incidentally I think P@H Purely kitten kibble is higher meat than the adult variant but the entire range is missing from the website so I cannot confirm that.

i feed the PAH purely 70% adult but when i had a kitten foster i got him the kitten version (which sparecat duelly scoffed) and i think thats was 65% and is very small kibble. the back of the adult pack states total chicken 70% but no longer have the kitten pack to check

Thanks guys, I think our Maizie falls in to the extreme fussiness category!! She will only eat brands where the kibble us tiny, like kitten food!! We tried Applaws, orijen, royal canin, JWB, hills and loads of others When the time came to move on to adult food before I realised it wasn't a flavour issue like normal cats but a 'size of the kibble' issue! Both the PAH ones I mentioned have tiny pieces so are acceptable to her!!  ;D

In that case the Purely probably contains more meat so would be my choice: I am very pleased with the quality of the Purely wet and would be quite happy to try the kibble. I wouldn't use the silver bags simply because a few free samples made Noah's poop  , but there are many on Purrs who feel it suits their cat(s) and their pocket.

I noticed that Purely had changed their packaging too, I personally prefer that to the silver bags as they have a higher meat content, but do mix the two gradually, esp if you go for hte 70% meat, or you could have a very upset tum. I am with FF over RC, I dont like the fact they dont declare the meat content (and not even on their prescription foods)

There are different levels of Purely, IIRC from about 40% to 70% meat. I would opt for the food with the highest declared meat content: most cat foods have a high protein content but this can come from an animal source or cheap fillers such as waste products of the cereal industry. Unscrupulous companies will list a few different grains so that they come further down the ingredients list and meat can come first.  :tired: At the end of the day cats are obligate carnivores with no nutritional need for carbohydrates; furthermore protein from animal sources is more bioavailable (better absorbed and utilised).

Sorry Sam but I don't trust Royal Canin as they are one of the only 'premium' brands which don't declare the meat content, and won't disclose if you e-mail either.  :shy: Where money and extreme fussiness is not a concern, my preference is for Orijen, Applaws, Encore, Porta21 (sensible variant) and similar grain-free foods.

I would go for the one that has the highest protein content ... my lot have Royal Canin and that is 38% protein.  (It should be the first thing listed on the list of ingedients).

Nutrition Question.....
« Reply #1 on: October 18, 2010, 21:46:12 PM »
Sorry everyone I know you must be sick of answering nutrition queries!!

Maizie has had the PAH own brand dry food (silver bag) since Easter and seems happy with it. When I was in there yesterday I noticed the PAH Purely dry now comes in small bags, so I got one for her to try.  I've given her some tonight and she seems to like it.

Sooooooo does anyone know nutritionally, which is better for her?? I'm no good at analysing the contents!! (Cost isn't an issue)

Any thoughts gratefully received!!  ;D
