Was asked tonight by old vet whether I had speared myself yet and said I had when I took the cap off. She laughed and said thats the normal one and then said DO NOT take the cap off with your teeth

Ummmm MM thats doesnt mean anything to me LOL....unless its this.

I just doing what the vet told me and told that to pull the plunger out a bit to make sure that there no blood cos some things must not go direct into the blood stream and it means that a small blood vessel has been hit.

If it happens to take out syringe and start again somewhere different.

Just so happens this drug it does not matter but I think this is probably standard safety procedure and if someone is starting injs new, like me , its best to teach best practice.

Ohhhh i love giving injection

I always do it between the shoulder blades ....pull the skin up and then feel with your other thumb so you can feel a taugh area...and fire !!

Gill you are doing the right thing and it sounds like it went well on both sides

We kept our needles in an old coffee jar with lid - keeps them all in one secure place and we used to hand jar over monthly and get outr new box of needles

There won't be, you don't need to worry about that, it's just something that confused me when I found myself drawing up air...it's not from under the skin at all, it's from the joint between the needle and syringe. Easiest way to avoid it is to just give the needle a push down onto the syringe while you're taking the cap off the needle, to make sure it's well sealed.

Injecting cats is waaaaay easier than injecting wiggly 900g rabbits that won't stay still, I can assure you!

Thank you for that info.......so much stuff to know.

They set up the syringes and contents for me and all siiting in a bag in the fridge. When empty they all go back for correct disposal.

I know it sounds stupid but I didnt realise how sharp they were to human skin cos just grazed one with my thumc accidentlt, dont know how and it made me bleed.

How do you know if you got air under the skin?

Yeah sounds like you did it fine

The only two other issues I've come across are - air drawing up into the syringe when you pull back the plunger to check it's not in a blood vessel...I was sure I hadn't stuck the needle through the other side and couldn't work out why on earth there would be air under the skin, until the vet pointed out to me that it means that the needle is too loosely attached to the syringe and air is creeping in at the joint. If this happens, withdraw the needle, push the needle hard onto the syringe and reset it without air in it before trying again.

The only other problem I've ever had is that the needle gets blocked and you can't push it in, this can particularly happen with some antibiotics that are a bit 'thicker' than others, and especially if they've been lurking for several days waiting to be used. I now keep a spare needle at home so I can swap the needle over myself without needing to faff about going back to the vets for a fresh syringeful.

And my final piece of advice - I use a 500g bisto gravy granules jar to store the needles - it's a perfect size for keeping them in without risk of accidentally pressing the plunger!

vet rang too and gave same info as gillian although apparently this ab can go into bloodstream but other stuff cant.

al;so said that the abs may make him a bit sleepy

Sounds like you've done it ok Gill. When my vet showed my how to inject Suzie she said if blood comes into the syringe it just means the needle is in a blood vessel, so you should take it out and try another spot.

I caught myself a couple of times after injecting Tobes - then spent most of the day wondering if there was any residual caninsulin I'd managed to jab into myself in the needle!

It is nerve wracking the first couple if times. But if you scruffed Franta just enough to get the skin fold and injected him there you shouldn't have a problem. I'm sorry the vet hurt him, it's really upsetting when they do things like that accidentally. (I always have to bite back "Oi,that's a member of my family you're inflicting pain on!")

sounds like you did it fine. Did you scruff him to have a fold of skin and then downwards at a slight angle so nothing comes out the other side - sounds like what you did. Watch yourself though - don't think you need his a.bs!

It went in back of neck and yes was shown and tried it at vets but there was a limit to how many times I could practice on Franta. One time the vet hurt Franta which I wasnt impressed.

Gill, if no liquid was apparant it's likely it went in. Where did you inject Franta in his body? Were you told to do it in a specific area? I'm sure you've done fine.

Were you shown how to give a jab?

I haven't personally but I have been around quite a few times when people I know ahve injected their diabetic cats... it sounds like you did it perfectly.

Bunnies are actually the same as cats just a bit more difficult.

I've not injected cats but have with Mig my bunny (does that count?).

I know this is a really stupid question but have just given Franta his first antibiotic injection.

I know that the needle went through the skin and no liquid came out any whhere and all has left the syringe...........soooooooooo presumably it must have gone in OK?

I had probs keeping him still cos he is restless but no blood came into the syringe as told by the vet although was only able to pull the plunger out a bit before doing the deed.

I know I am daft but just need some reassurance that I have done it right!

I have rung the vets but someones gonna have to ring me.....grrrrrrrrrrrr.

One thing the vet didnt tell me yesterday, is what happens if blood does appear in the syringe cos it shouldnt.

And I caught my thumb on the blooming needle grrrrrrrrrrr
