Ok just had my first go at claw trimming - piece of cake! Used human nail clippers and both Jerry and Gizzy laid happily on thier backs and let me.
Im so lucky to have such good boys.

To prevent being hacked at I always wrap mine up in a blanket like you would a baby & they accept that as feeling safe & struggle less. Just bring out one paw at a time to clip.

Done my neighbours cat like that too who was not used to having them done.

I have only just recently started to get my boys' claws - before that, I always took them to the vet.  Mine are indoor cats and have loads of scratch posts/and my furniture....but this really only sharpens them more rather than shortening them.     Ollie attacks the vet so thought it would be better to learn how to do it myself.   I had to do one paw at a time spread over a few nights - but we got there in the end and my legs are in a lot better condition.

Last night i managed to trim them :wow: i tried holding her to do it and she was having none of it, :evillaugh: but if i gave her a belly rub then cut two claws, then another belly rub and 2 more etc. Didn't bother with the back ones, they seem to be shorter from all her jumping anyway, and they aren't the ones that were catching me. So glad i got it done as she's off to the vets today for jabs and a check over. :scared:

My Riley hates it as well. I usually can only do 2 before he's off. I just do another 2 the next day and so on. Digby just lies there.  Poppy - daren't go there yet. She'd tear me to shreads!

Both the boys use their scratching post daily but the scratching post actually sharpens their claws so clipping is a must as they are both quite touchy feely so even if they're just laying next to me resting their feet on me gently paddling it can be painful.  I've done it since they were kittens but Riley in particular has decided he doesn't want it doing now he's a big boy and really struggles.  He doesn't scratch me just wrestles out of my grip whilst wailing like he's being murdered so I literally have to rugby tackle him and hold him with a really strong grip.  I'm always out of breath after I finish doing him  :evillaugh:

I clip with small human nail clippers.

For the guys that don't like it I'll do 1 paw at a time each night.

Oh I definitely clip. If I don't Memphis' claws get so long and sharp. Just yesterday he was inflicting injury to my hands whilst wrestling, a little bit of a trim with the nail clippers makes a massive difference.

He's been used to it since he was a tiny blip so he sits on my lap nicely and it's all over in seconds.

lay me down, let me go, feeling heavy the ground is cold,
lay me down take it slow I'm ready to stumble, sing & then swing low

As my cats are allowed out during the day I've never done this and they do use scratching posts well but have often wondered if others do it regularly and how you got them used to it, especially if you didn't do it from when they were kittens.

My Amber got her claws clipped last night because she had sharpened them to needle state. Sadly for Mogs she stuck her nose in and got attached to the settee at the same time so she had hers done too  :evillaugh:

I think I need to do this to Amber, she's very sharp and never really learnt that she should put her claws in so she treats me like a pin cushion!

I'd get her used to claw clipping at a young age, as she's new and you don't want to freak her out so you could start by playing with her feet, touching them, squeezing them gently so the claws come out, stroking them.  In a few days you can clip the razor sharp ends off, steer well clear of the quick (pinky coloured bit).

I find I have to clip the boys claws every two weeks or so as even gentle paddling is torture for me as their claws are literally like pins!

Misha didn't mind a fairly standard nail file used during fusses... took an hour to do all four paws but he didn't mind it too much

Ginny is very nearly perfect, but her claws are tearing me to shreds. She's not been swiping or anything but even just walking across me she's covering me with scratches. :innocent: When i got into a hot bath this morning i felt like i was being stabbed with red hot needles.

I don't think she's going to let me trim her claws, and tbh i don't want to break her trust by attempting it. She has a scratching post but she's only used it once and not for long. So, are there any other ways to wear down claws?
