3rd eyelid, anyone have any experience of this?

Well Leo has had his blood results back and they have all come back negative There is no sign of infection and all his organs are functioning normally, the vet

says he occasionally sees this in young cats and it should eventually right itself. I assume that the results took longer than usual because they were sent away and not done in house Delsey.

Normally the only bloods they need starving for are the liver ones, I have the works done on mine once a year so they need starving for that, but only ever had one cat needing sedating - Molly does have to have anaesthetic gel on her neck though, or you have no chance. Fingers crossed for the FIV and FeLV tests - bit confused with the timescale though, in house tests are done in 10 mins, and Glasgow can take up to 10 days.

How many other cats do you have?

If the results come back as positive, it's not a death sentence. Make sure you then have the virus culture tests done rather than relying on the antibody tests, which are often misleading. Even then, cats can throw either virus off.

I took Leo to see the vets and saw a different vet to last time, again he was examined and  he could find nothing wrong. He did say that some cats can have their 3rd eyelid showing for weeks at a time and be perfectly fine and everything eventually goes back to normal. He also said he couldn't rule out f.i.v or leukaemia so because there are other cats to consider it was decided to test for these conditions. Thankfully he didn't need to be sedated and the only thing hurt was his pride We get the results back Monday so keeping everthing crossed.

Thanks for your kind wishes, will let you know how it goes. In reply to Ela I was told he would need to be sedated if he could not keep still because the blood has to be taken from his neck, because there are not enough blood in the veins of a cats leg?? we are hoping it does not come to that. How does your vet take blood from the ferals then?

Well hes got an appointment on Thursday morning and has to fast from midnight Wednesday in-case he has to be sedated to take his blood,which also means he will be kept in for the day

Um, is the little one a 'he who must be obeyed type'? Our vet never asks us to starve a cat for bloods and certainly does not keep them in even in the case of ferals.

Sometimes cats have their third eyelid showing when they're relaxed. If he has it showing all the time, it's often a sign of dehydration. Thorough checkup needed. Good luck at vets.

Hope Leo is Ok and think your vet should have been a bit more proactive if the 3rd eyelids were showing cos its always a sign that something is wrong.

Thanks for your replys, Ive read the link Ela interesting about the respiratory infection as the vet did say he sounded a little snuffly but thinks he may have had cat flu as a kitten, although the rescue never mentioned this and he has always had a throaty purr.

Well theres only one way to find out and I will be booking him in with the vet next week, just hope its nothing too serious especially with two other cats in the house.

Hi my cat Leo has for the past three weeks or so been showing his 3rd eyelid in both eyes. We took him to the vet who could find nothing obvious but said that if things didn't improve then we would have to bring him back to have bloods taken. I was really hoping that this was a virus that would right itself as he is normal in every other way ie he has a good appetite, his coat is good and he comes and goes as normal.
 Leo unfortunately is a very scardy cat and he spent a year in rescue with his brother Larry because they were so unsociable and it has taken over a year but he is progressing well and is starting to become very friendly,recently spending the night on the bed with me and my husband The thing is when we took him to the vet he was very anxious and unfortunately the vet has said he will have to sedate him to take his blood as he kept trying to escape as well as covering my husband in scratches. I really wish that I didn't have to put him through this but of course I realise that his health is paramount and I'm now wondering what could be wrong, so has anyone had a cat with this condition?
