Its really handy to have a jumbo litter tray out there too then when it rains and they want to only go to the loo outside, they have a place to go without getting wet :)

Marl is funny, he only will go in the litter trays and you know he's going cause he trys to cover it up but only paws at the side of the tray! He hasn't figured out its the litter you have to paw to cover it up!

because the garden is cat proofed I have to scoop outside - I've got a long handled shovel and scooper that I got from a pet shop!  Tilly always goes on the lawn (and spends ages trying to cover it up with grass funny thing) the worst job is the gravel around the conservatory!

Really?  Thanks for that tip, I might look out for some and give it a try.  We still have litter trays indoors which they use occasionally but Geoffrey mostly prefers the lawn

We used to have a problem with neighbour cats and local foxes doin their biz on our lawn, so we bought (from Homebase) a spray called Cat-a-pult, which will prevent them from using your garden as a toilet! It really works, we sprayed the lawn last year June, and haven't had any poop since.
Dogs have owners. Cats have staff.

I have to scoop...Geoffrey has decided that his new toilet will be on the lawn, just by the patio, in an area which gets full sun

If you don't scoop the poop you will in time notice an unpleasant odour esp as they are in a confined area  :faint:

I won't notice a thing as I have no sense of smell, maybe when the flies start buzzing around I'll know to have a little scoop  :evillaugh:

If you don't scoop the poop you will in time notice an unpleasant odour esp as they are in a confined area  :faint:  Ours aren't confined so I don't scoop as often as has been mentioned except for around the base of the monkey puzzle which seems to be the loo for a lot more puddies than live with us  :shify:

I have to say that when I kept mine in a confined area, I found that not scooping was not a good idea. The local dung beetles seemed to have gone on strike so instead of breaking down the evidence turned into hard little black logs which accumulated quite a bit against the dark soil before I recognised the problem  :-[

Someone else has recommended a sand pit and I have to say that was theonly thing that worked for me as I was able to identify and remove droppings before they became a problem

Hey Helens going poopie treasure huntin   :evillaugh: lots of fun it is   I have about 4 or 5 dirt places where Garfy goes and its quite difficult to see the "treasure" as he's a good lad and always covers it up very well. I think it's down to when garf was tiny lad he was used to seeing Gizzy go in the garden and copied him.

Marl on the other hand wont go in the garden at all and has two outside jumbo covered trays which he uses.  Its great cause as they have 24 access to the garden we dont need a loo in the house :) :)

Thanks Gillian(sneakifeline) and Gill(Ambercat)  :evillaugh:

I will inspect the area to see if he has done any poos then and scoop if necessary, I guess there's less urgency to scoop compared to the litter trays in the house  ;)  I'd rather leave it as soil for him instead of sand as he really seems to enjoy digging around in it - it's compost and sand too from when it was dug over in preparation for the rockery so it's nice and soft for his beautiful paws  :)

Lucas has started going to the toilet in the freshly dug area which is now a rockery, I purposely left a large-ish patch bare as I knew he liked digging around and he's continued to use it.  I've definitely seen him do a wee but am not sure about poo's, as he is limited to my garden only and that is pretty much the only bare patch for him to use will I need to 'scoop the poop' outside too or will it biodegrade?

It will biodegrade - in time, but better to scoop really I would have thought. I built a special outdoor litter tray for the cats where I used to live. I just bought some of that log roll, formed it into a circle (well it ended up being more oval, but there you go!) and filled it with sharp sand. I found that was easier to see the poop to scoop it, rather than on the dark earth. I've also got several of those shallow terracotta planters filled with sharp sand, they seem to like those too - although a lot of the time I find them curled up asleep in them LOL!  ;D

Probably a silly question but even when I've had fully indoor/outdoor cats they've always come in to use the litter tray so never been in this situation before!
