Now my kitties have clean teeth I've bought some plaque off...I've just put it on their meal for the first time and Milly sniffed it and decided she wanted to go out instead (not unusual, may not be related at all!) but Geoffrey polished his dinner off as usual but then promptly threw it all back up again.  He does vomit from time to time but it's usually after several hours not within 5 minutes.  Might it be related to the plaque off

Hi Bluecat - I got my Plaque-off from petplanet.co.uk, and it arrived very quickly ;) Our two have taken to it well. I might have a look for that pet-dent, and see if they will go for it - or is it only on prescription?

I'm waiting to see what Pet Dent costs from my vet on Monday. He thinks it's better than Logic Gel or Plaque Off. It has different ingredients acc to a website I saw. Anyone else had any luck with it? I hope it tastes ok.

I got mine from a local pet shop, and I did notice it in Pets at Home yesterday for the same price - £9.99 for a tub, but for one cat, it should last a year, so much cheaper than a dental.

aww bless, poor Swamp!   I hope he is feeling better soon, and tha the infection clears up (is it Metronidozole he's on? I was on that for an abcess once! lol).
Riley was developing a bit of plaque and a touch of gingivitis, so I figured I'd better get on top of it asap while he's still young. I might try the logic gel, too - along with the wings and plaque-off - every little helps, I guess!
Hugs and headbutts to Swamp, we will be sending him lots of good, healing vibes  :care:

Didn't want to start a separate thread on the same subject, but my vet's just advised Pet Dent gel rather than Logic (which I'd just bought :( ) or Plaque Off, but then my boy is elderly and has awful toofies and bad breath and can't have an op to scale and polish.  Vet has put Swamp on strong antibiotics (Metro something) 1/4 twice a day in case the infection's got into the bones in the mouth too. Poor wee boy is off his food today which may be the antibiotics or may just be his horrible cold.

I'm glad you're starting while the toofies are pristine as it's such a battle. Now if they'd only allow us to use an electric toothbrush daily.....sponsored by Elastoplast

:thanks: for all the feedback, guys ;D Our tub arrived this week, and they'e taken to it like a dream - they don't seem to even notice it, which was my main concern. It will certainly be mainly preventative with Skye - her teeth are still pristine. I'm hoping that between the raw chicken and the plaque-off, Riley's teeth will soon be back to perfect pearly-whiteness ;D

Is plaque off a preventative measure or does it help with dental issues?

Its a preventive. It claims to prevent plaque from forming on the teeth. So just by that action it will help with dental issues I guess, but its not instant, its one of those things you need to use for a while before you see any effects, and of course the teeth actually need to be clean of tartar/plaque before you start, because it doesnt remove it.

Susanne, it does say once a day, and I would certainly be wary of 1 scoop twice a day with Jaffa, although half a scoop twice a day shouldnt be an issue.

I probably overdose my boys with it then as I give near 1/2 to 1 scoop each (don't really measure it out) but they have it twice a day.  Never really considered that too much could be harmful.  Hard to say whether it is effective as I also use logic gel (sporadically I have to say) and now chicken wings for Jaffa.  They gobble up their food with it on no problem.  Even if I get a clump of it in one place they still eat it all up.

No normal meals here either as Jaffa has a little water added to all his meals, they both have plaque off added to breakfast and tea, and Jaffa has a viacutan capsule added to tea.

:thanks: again everyone! It's good to know even fussy babes take to it well. My two aren't too fussy, but you just never know when you add stuff. No doubt they will be fine! That's a great idea about adding water to food to up their fluid intake - I might steal that one! ;D My two don't get much dry food - being inside-types I worry about their waistlines, so they're on mostly wet food, but at this time of year with the dry air and heating on, I do worry that they might need a bit more.

Mine are fine with it, which is quite impressive as Molly is very fussy with things being put in her food, and wouldnt eat food with Logic Gel in it.

:thanks: guys - I'll try my two on the 1/2 scoop to begin with and see how they go. Just a few other questions - when you first started using it, how did your fluffies take to it? Do they find it quite palatable? And why do you add water to one of their meals? Is it to compensate for the dryness of the plaque-off, or for some other reason, and would you recommend doing this too?

It's smells of seaweed but they've had it every dinner time for a few months now and they've never once left a nibble so it can't be that bad.

As for the water, Lucas never used to drink water only cat milk, I was advised to try and wean him off it so I started adding water to their breakfast make sure he got enough fluids.  I have since seen him drink two times but it puts my mind at rest to add the water, they have wet food for breakfast and dinner with biscuits permanently down to snack on so I like to make sure they are taking in enough fluids.

Edited to add:  I was quite horrified when I found what it smelt of as when I first got the tub I had no sense of smell - think I preferred it when I couldn't smell

Same goes for glucosamine interfering with blood sugar levels of some diabetic cats.

Looks like mine is a later batch then so maybe they've researched it and decided to up the recommended dosages?  It still says 1/2 a scoop is suitable for cats so no reason not to continue giving half - I'll probably stick with one scoop as the main thing is that I'm not doing them any harm by giving a whole scoop.

Strange that 2 batches have different instructions   :shify: :shify:

Its the iodine in it that can effect hyper t cats.

Mine expires 10-2010, and says

Small dogs up to 10kg and cats - 1/2 scoop, lasts 1 year
Medium dogs (10-25kg) - 1 scoop, lasts 6 months
Large and giant dogs (25kg +) - 2 scoops, lasts 3 months.

So, I wonder why there are 2 different lots of instructions, cos there is a difference between using 1/2 scoop and 1 scoop!!

 Mine is expiry date 2011-09 so I guess a fairly recent batch - it says:

Small dogs up to 10kg and cats - 1/2 to 1 scoop

Medium dogs 10 - 25kg                - 1 to 2 scoops

Large and giant dogs 25kg+          - 2 to 3 scoops

how odd, mine says 1/2 scoop for small dogs and cats - 1 scoop is for 10-25kg dogs.
My problem is I have cats eating in different rooms, and I dont prepare teh food in one place and carry it round, so the Plaque Off is in one of 2 rooms!!
I read that for the first time yesterday, fortunately none are on any meds at the moment.

Helen, the directions do say half a scoop a day!!

Not on my tub, it says 1/2 to 1 scoop for cats.

I am very poor at remembering to use it, have forgotten again today, as have been focusing on putting extra water in their food!!

I always add water for breakfast and plaque off for dinner so it's like a mini routine for me now. Mind you Im used to adding supplements to every meal as I did it for so many years with Tiggy - almost feels wrong not adding anything to the food!

While we're on the subject, none of yours are currently on meds for hyperthyroid are they?  I just read on the tub it says not for use in animals undergoing treatment.

I use it on Max's wet food once a day, sprinkle 1/2 a 'spoonful' or whatever you would call the little measuring wotsit in the tub  :shy:

I've been using it for about 2 years now, and it does appear to be making a difference, so I will continue using it.

I've used it for a few months now, can't comment on the effectiveness as I started the boys on it at a young age as a preventative measure (they're 10 months now) but as for the other Q's...

They have taken to it just fine, the first meal I sprinkled it on they looked a bit suspicious but that didn't stop them polishing it off.  I sprinkle one level scoop (a tiny measure) on each dinner meal - breakfast has added water, they're not allowed 'normal' meals  :evillaugh:  I reckon a tub will last at least 9 months, if not longer.

I've ordered some plaque-off for my guys, and I know a lot of people here use it. Just wondered how you've found it - How effective has it been? How well have your furbabes taken to it? How much / how often do you feed it?
I've read a bit about it, and read some reviews on the site where I bought it, but was interested in hearing about what its like in practical terms from people who are usuing it failry often. ;)
