Thanks very much all. Bella was diagonised with a dodgy heart around 2 yrs ago now. The vet she was was likley and national expert in the field and we were lucky to be able to be referred to him, without immediate expert care at this vets she wouldnt of made it..

She has in the past suffered from bad teeth but i dont think it was a contributing factor....

I do realise 2 yrs later she is on borrowed time, but she has gone from strenght to strength and other then being abit slower and not wishing to go out so much, she still can bet up her brother.

I will talk to the vet next month about her taking longer to come around from the antitetic. With luck she came come home that day....

When Imogen [dicky ticker] went in for a dental it took her ages to come out of the anaesthetic properly, we couldn't pick her up until 8pm from a morning operation...I'm not wanting to worry you at all , just be aware that it may take Bella a bit longer to come out of it, my vet said it's a common problem with pusscats like ours but really, if they're in hospital and the practice's aware of the heart problem, they'll keep a special eye on her I'm sure. Hopefully with Bella it won't be an issue and she'll be able to come home on time for lots of hugs and fusses  :Luv:

No-one told me about the possibility of a slower anaesthetic recovery time and I was in bits worrying  :scared:

Do you know the cause of the dicky heart?  Is it possible that the bad teeth could be causing or contributing to the heart problem - in which case it might help the heart (or at the very least prevent further problems).  My late old boy Sooty had a major dental with 8 extractions at nearly 19 and was a different cat afterwards, it was only then I realised how much his teeth had been affecting him without me realising it  :(

Good luck xx

The raw steak around here goes straight down, along with any pills stuffed inside it  :evillaugh:

Turkey necks & raw steak (pre-frozen) are also great for teeth.

I would have bloods run before and have her on fluids throughout and make sure they use the best GA  ;D if her teeth are in mess she will have a better time without them there.

Im sure they would send her home the same day unless shes a special case like Lilycat.

Dont think so, as it is still classed as part of their prescription range (the letters give it away), not one of their science plan range, and I believe RC is the same - Zooplus may, but PAH dont (or didn't a month ago when I was there)

In NZ you can get the toothcleaning one from pet suppliers, can you not get it here?? Same in OZ, it was readily available at better pet supply shops. Obviously the more specific prescription foods were not sold, but tooth cleaning food should be available from pet suppliers ...

I would go through VetUK (through one of the charity links obv!!), as it is vet food, so not available through other sources - they are normally cheaper though, and doing free p & p on food at the moment. You can also get RC Dental too.

Tricky one, i have had a 13yo with a heart murmur have a dental (and lump removal), but that was quite a low grade murmur, took 3 vets to pick it up!! All my cats have come home the same day, you might be able to have a chat with the vet to make sure that will be the case, and maybe spray bedding with FEliway and have that put in her cage.

add raw chicken wings to her diet also. they will assist with scaling her teeth. I know siamese are not the most cooperative of beasts, but you can also buy kitty toothpaste if you are brave enough ...

I just had to make the decision about a dental for my 17 year old pancreatic cat Dragan who had been very ill after raiding my bin for 5 weeks.  I talked to the vet, who obviously could not give me any guarantee, and we decided to go for it.  He has been much better since but he doesn't have the heart problem to contend with.  I don't wish to offer any advice as it is a decision only you can make.  However anaesthetics are much better nowadays and they gave my Dragan a drip throughout the op.  Good luck

MY Bella who has a dodgy heart, advised to get teeth done
« Reply #1 on: November 23, 2007, 16:35:37 PM »
Hi all

My Bella is 12 yrs old and has a dicky heart.. She was literally saved two years ago from being dead and has made a remarkable recover to still have a great quality of life. She is active hasnt lost any weight and is still bright eyed. She has been on tablets since her brush with death.

On her check up today, i was advised to get her teeth sorted as they are quite bad.. I have been given some Hill TD biscuits to try and help but last time she had her teeth done (many years ago) she was abit sore afterwards but fine.

I am just worried abit the stress invovlved for her.. She is a very vocal siamese, loves her home comforts.. I realise that dentals are often the last op they do each day and i want her to come home the same day and not stay in, as its too stressful for her..

What can i do to avoid all this stress, as i realise that she probably does need to have her teeth done despite the risks as that could lead to other more serious problems in the future..

By the way i adore her to bits and just want the the best for her....

Any pointers?

She is due her vac in Dec and i said to the vets that can we decide in the New Year.
